Okay then. Good luck.
By the way, your reasoning is flawed in the moon affecting the river. The gravitational pull of the moon doesn't have such a strong effect on smaller bodies of water, and tides only apply to the waves in the ocean. Maybe if we were talking about a large lake, but in order to have a river be rough like what you're talking about, there would have to have been a lot of rainfall, so I would go with that. I don't want you to sound like you don't know what you're talking about. ^.^;
As for how the Tanteidan would grow up without Conan, I think they would be okay. Once Shinichi returned, I think they would latch on to him and adopt him as their new role model.

-.-' Between you and me, physics have never been my fort, plus we never actually saw that, more like mentioning in passing... A rain seems good. I don't know what to do with Ayumi's crush, it will obviously stay there, I don't know if it have changed to be stronger or if it'll be the same. Do you think Ran will react badly if Shinichi....I don't know.... Disappears off the faces of earth? Muahahahhhaaha!! Who said Shinichi was coming back?! MuahahahaHAHAHAHAHA!!! Um... Sorry about that. I, let's say, enjoy angst. Not reading (I do seem to have an umhealthy obsession though) but I would love writting it! ^-^ Most of my fanfics (DC and otherwise) involve angst, in unhealthy amounts... Thanks ^-^
Pst! How the others react to losing Conan/Shinichi? I really need it.

Well, I could tell you what I think about character reactions, but that wouldn't be helping you in the long run. I think you need to think about that on your own. You don't seem to be very in touch with the characters, and that's a recipe for mediocre writing and weak characterization that does not allow the reader to bond with and relate to the characters. If you're not in sync with your characters, how can you expect your readers to be?
I really encourage you to spend some time with the characters, getting to know them. Some exercises I used to do back when I was acting to prepare for a role was I would pretend to be the character throughout the day as I went about my life. For instance, when you go shopping, ask yourself "If I were Haibara, which dress would I buy?" If you go out to eat, ask yourself, "What would Mitsuhiko order?" Other questions like what the character's favorite color is and why, what their favorite book is, if they could have a super power what would it be, and other questions like that.
Once you get to know the characters as if they were real human beings, I feel that writing will come more naturally to you and you'll be able to understand how they would think and feel in a given situation. Once you understand what is important to a character, what they care about, what makes them sad, what makes them angry, and what they fear most, you'll be a better, more confident writer.
I wish you luck!

Awesome advice, Mikau. That's really helpful not just for knowing about other characters in order to write fanfictions about them, but also to know and keep track of your own original characters.

I'm glad you think it's good advice! I was hoping it would be helpful. That's how I write, anyway. Actually doing the exercises can be difficult at times, though. ^.^; Some characters are a little hard to penetrate, but I think that really getting to know your characters is an essential part of being a competent writer.

This questions a bit broad, how many characters in DCMK could have at some point killed someone. By characters I mean significant, recurring ones who are on the 'good' side per say and haven't been explicitly shown to have killed cough*gin*cough. I think that many of the policemen, especially the FBI, could have been forced to kill at some point in their careers, but I don't really know how the 'licence to kill' thing works if there is one. Anyone who comes into close contact with criminals even, Kogoro, Yusaku, it's a possibility.
This was just a question that I thought of a few days ago that's been bugging me. Conan and the kids could be hanging around looking up to people who have killed. How would they react if they found out?
Edit: The moment I posted this I got a nagging feeling I've asked this question before…

Akai has, almost definitely. You don't get a reputation as a master sniper without actually, y'know, sniping people. And I wouldn't at all be surprised if the rest of the FBI have as well, at some point. I don't know how many of the police have; in the Tokyo Bomber case, when Sato almost shoots the bomber, it's treated as a Very Big Deal. But I can't say I know the actual laws/regulations for police in Japan, so maybe not. Other than that it's hard to say. Gosho seems to favor sort of an all good/all bad contrast for recurring characters; the only gray areas would really be the black org infiltrators. {If you know who the infiltrators are:}I can definitely see Bourbon killing someone, even if just to maintain his cover. I can't say I understand the secret police, but I think they have a much greater licence to kill than regular officers, and he doesn't seem to flinch at much. As for Kir, she may have, but I can't as readily see it. I mean, she's in a very high stakes situation, and logically she has even more authority to kill than the FBI agents do, but she's not as unflinching as Bourbon or Akai. She might shoot actual org members, but I don't know that she has. I think if Gosho wants us to view a character as a good guy, he generally doesn't have them do anything irreversible like murder. He'll have sympathetic villains, sure, but it seems like the only people good guys can murder are bad guys. I dunno, though, that might be selective memory talking, so if anyone remembers any examples that don't fit with this I'll readily admit to being wrong. As far as how the kids would react, I think Conan would want to know the context, and would analyze the heck out of it. I think he could still work with someone who's killed people - he already does, with Vermouth, though he doesn't trust her. So he'd continue working with them, if he needed them (and if he didn't feel obliged to or capable of turning them in for murder charges) and just work around how much he can predict them. But I dunno that he really looks up to anyone anyway. Boy has a bit of an ego. As far as the rest of the kids, I can see it going one of two ways. Either they go "but killing people is murder and murder is wrong" and are summarily heartbroken, or they view it as a good versus evil question, wherein good guys have to fight bad guys, and therefore it's okay as long as the people they killed were bad. Which isn't healthy, but little kids are like that.
ahh ichthy you can go to the bbc code tab of the editing thing, and find the random
that's not the one you put in at the end, and get rid of that, so it covers the whole thing instead of one paragraph!

For fun and future reference, anyone wanna help me compile a schedule of Kaito's typical day? Here's my rough idea:
7:30-8:30 - Wake up, breakfast, walk to school with Aoko. 8:30-3:00 - School, assuming he doesn't cut class at any point. Tease Aoko (perhaps the rest of the female student body too), avoid contact with Hakuba/Akako as much as humanly possible, lunch, etc. 3:00-4:00 - Kaito strikes me as the kind of guy who can afford to be in the "Go Home Club" (and he'd probably rather die than be a typical salaryman), so... go home or to the Blue Parrot, burn through homework, maybe make an answer key and sell it to his less studious/moral classmates for pocket change. 4:00-5:00 - Do research on any legends that may lead to Pandora, cross-reference with Jii's own research. 5:00-7:00 - Scope out locations of future heists (I imagine he has a buffer of at least three or four "backup" heists at any given time), maybe go down there and personally inspect the security if necessary. 7:00-11:30 - Test out gadgets, new and old; practice disguise skills; regular exercises to keep him limber; squeeze dinner in there somewhere if he doesn't just go "f**k it" and order McDonald's Wonder Burger. 11:30-7:30 - Sleep the sleep of the just, dream of smashing gems and skinning snakes.

That already sounds pretty good to me. Though I thought it was "Welcome Burger," not "Wonder Burger"?

Hi! I need a bit of help with this: How many times has Ran seen the "shrinking face", on Conan and/or Shinichi? So far I can remember the Diplomatic murder case (1st time Heiji appears), and when the false Shinichi appeared. Any else?

Also, shortly after the fake Shinichi thing (as seen in Blue Spark of Hate, Part 1). That was when she wouldn't let go of Shinichi's hand because she doesn't want him to leave until he's explained himself. Oh! Also during that school play! When Hattori put on too much powder and dressed up as Shinichi. (Desperate Revival Arc) Hmm, lessee...

When you can't write angst to save your life but all your plunnies are angsty

Hi guys,
I skimmed through the thread, so let me know if i missed it.
Anyway, I am plotting a fic where Kudo Yuusaku's going to feature more prominently and angling at him to be more active in coaching Shinichi to be a detective.
But other than a smarter-than-Shinichi, mystery writer who swoops in to save the day whenever Shinichi can't, I can't get a good gauge of his character.
Is it fair to say that he's : 1) a hands-off father who like to teachs through practice/practical rather than theory 2) cool, calm and collected even at the face of danger 3) very confident and have a very good gauge of his son's abilities and short coming? 4) likes to walk at his own pace (that's why he travels so much and runs away from his editors whenever he can?) 5) politically savvy (making friends with various police) to the point that he can be rather manupilative? 6) shares a prankster side like Yukiko
What else would you use to describe him?
And do you think he's likely to: 1) Pushes shinichi to be a better detective when push comes to shove if there's an impending threat, and become a harsh task master (or would he still take the hands off approach - but he more subtle about it) 2) Likely to engage a 'war' with the Black Org if given a motive, or would he rather ran away to keep his family safe? Or just stay invisible/under the radar/maintain status quo.
Thanks in advance!

Considering his first appearance consists of him trying to terrify his son into leaving the country and relying on Interpol?
Yuusaku's not a front-line type. He's more of a director. He'll definitely take Shin'ichi off the radar once he has to, and he's certainly used to escaping his editors, but he's never stopped being a novelist, he's never stopped being a semi-detective, and he wouldn't try to completely remove his family from a fight into which they've been fundamentally woven. He's got contacts that can engage for him at a moment's notice, and like Yukiko he'll use them if he sees fit.
He just doesn't want to disrespect his son's wishes and intelligence when he does it. Shin'ichi will have to agree that he's out of his league first, which he'll certainly do because he's a smart kid before he's a stubborn kid, right? Riiiight?
