Finish It! Monday, October 17 - Wednesday, November 30What is it?For the next month and a half, Poirot will be pressing pause on our contests and other activities to allow members to devote their time and energies to ongoing projects, works in progress, neglected works, and whatever else just needs to get done that they haven't been able to find the time for.How to participate:1) All you need to participate is to have a goal for this event. Do you want to finish three chapters? Write 10,000 words on one of your fics? Finish the darn thing already? Just make some semblance of progress, even if it's only one or two thousand words a week? Any goal is fine, so long as it's specific enough that you know when you've achieved it. You can focus on just one fic or make some progress on multiple stories. You determine what a reasonable goal is for yourself. 2) Now that you've got your goal, please share it in red in this thread so everyone can see what you're working on and help you keep on task by checking in with you and holding you accountable. Not that we're going to kick you out or anything if you don't meet your goal, but if everyone knows what your goal is, they can more easily encourage and support you. We're all in this together. In your initial goal post (this part you don't have to put in red), you might want to give a brief synopsis of the project(s) you're working on and include a link to your WIP if you have it posted anywhere. Feel free to post a copy in the Prompt Fics section of our Fanfic Library ( poirotcafe.com/board/32/poirot-cafe-prompt-fics ) (if redoing the formatting isn't too much of a bother) so everyone can easily follow your progress. You can label fics posted there in the format "Finish It! Event: (Your Title Here)". 3) Check in. Let us know in this thread how things are going. Tell us when things are going well, when you're being productive, if you're stuck, or if you just need a little bit of encouragement. I'd like this to be a really interactive community event if at all possible. You don't have to check in every day, but maybe once a week or so, let us know how you're doing. I hope you all have fun working on your projects! Hopefully this will be a very productive month and a half for us all. Just let me know if you have any thoughts, comments, questions, or concerns. Let's do this thing! ^o^

When you can't write angst to save your life but all your plunnies are angsty

Name: (Still undecided - I'm terrible at coming up with names)
Synopsis: Even with the Black Organisation brought down to its knees, it's too late for Edogawa Conan to take the antidote and return to his former life of Kudo Shinichi. Especially since it has been more than six years he was first shrunk into a six-year-old child. As he struggles to come to terms with this, there is another storm brewing. And just like last time, he couldn't stop himself from getting roped into this big and equally emotional wrenching case.
Warning: may include info on badly-researched* Japanese sex/porn industry (no actually porn/smut will be written - I'm not pimping out any of the DCMK character....), the Yakuzas, headcannon Kogoro. This fic was intended to be KIDCon/KaiCon, but it most likely be non explicit if I can even squeeze in any sort of romance at all. -.-
*I say badly-researched only because well, it's Google.
Rating: M-rated for language. Other than that, the content itself should be T-rated. (Again, No Smut/Porn! Promise!)
Main Characters: Edogawa Conan/Kudo Shinichi, Kuroba Kaito/Kaitou KID, Mouri Kogoro, Haibara Ai
Notes: This monstrosity has ballooned from the self-indulged, simple KaiCon fic that I initially had in mind. T.T
I haven't posted anything yet, and won't until i finish this whole thing. I'll liable to change too many things along the way.
I have mostly plotted and written approximately three chapter-ish? around 15K words. Minor details still needs to be plotted but I have the general plot in mind already and working towards it. I expect this to be around ten to fifteen chapters long? or less, I don't know really, cause i'm liable to add to remove scenes just to make the whole thing work. And this is already the second attempt at this fic. so...ya....
GOAL: I'm at 10%, hoping to finish 50% by the end of Nov (Ideally, I can magically find the time and energy to finish this, but I'll be off on a family holiday for slightly longer than two weeks, so unlikely. Boo hoo.)

Goal One: I would like to finish the first five chapters or approximately 30,000 words of the AiKai fic I started for Haunted.
Title: Good question. -.-;
Rating: T as usual
Major Characters: Kaito, Haibara, Hakuba (AiKai and HakuSera pairings prominently)
Summary: (The story takes place when Ai is sixteen and Kaito is twenty-six and out in the world as a professional magician.) Kaito is emotionally in tatters over his family situation, his relationship with Aoko, and the way his life is going in general while Haibara is trying to regroup after the Professor's death while also dealing with Shinichi's upcoming marriage and the ghost of her relationship with Gin keeping her from being able to form new relationships. Her cousin Hakuba Saguru with whom she's reconnected in the past few years introduces her to his friend Kaito, and things just fall together in crazy, dysfunctional, emotionally broken ways from there as they help each other heal and learn to trust again.
Notes: I have about 8k thus far that will probably translate into two or three chapters. I haven't done any editing at all, so I haven't broken it into chapters or anything, but...I at least have my outline for the whole thing now, so I know approximately where I'm going with this. I have a feeling that this is going to be my next Falling in Love Literally as far as total length and plot arcs goes. I'm a little wary about posting anything until I know for sure I'm going to stick with it. I'm so tired of starting multi-chapter fics and then not being able to finish them in a timely manner. For this fic, I'd like to get a good 30k under my belt before I start publishing anything on ff.net. I might share the beginning with you guys once I get it polished up enough. I'd really like some feedback on this one. I'm feeling uncertain about it for some reason.
Goal Two: I'd really like to finish the Heiji/Kazuha/Kaito love triangle fic that I started for Heat.
Title: Still working on that.
Rating: T
Major Characters: Kaito, Kazuha, Heiji, Hakuba, Akako (plus the DCMK gangs) (Heiji/Kazuha/Kaito and KaitoxAkako prominently with some background HakuSera)
Summary: The DC and MK gangs just so happen to be vacationing at the same ski resort where Kazuha finally has enough of Heiji's careless, clueless behavior. Kaito steps in, making himself into Heiji's rival in order to give the Osakan a wake up call to keep him from ruining things with the woman he loves just like Kaito did with Aoko. Kaito's attentions to Kazuha spark Akako's jealousy as well.
Notes: I have a little over two thousand words for this one, and I estimate it to be somewhere around 6-8k when I finish. The problem is that I had it all planned out, but then I lost the motivation to work on it and now I've forgotten where I was going with it. :/ I'm sure I could make something of it if I tried. I might just have to devote a weekend to this one.
Goal Three: I want to write some RanKai. Just something. I don't care if it's only a thousand words or just a one-shot or something.
Notes: I started a RanKai piece for Dance, and I have another kind of similar to it that I was going to have be twenty-six short chapters, one for each letter of the alphabet. Maybe if I could get the first three chapters of the one I started for dance or if I could do A, B, and C of the other one, that would be good. I only have about five hundred words of each, and I left off in a place that's kind of hard to pick up from in each, and the plots were kind of similar, so I guess it doesn't matter where I go with it so long as I go. I'm sure something interesting is bound to happen.
In summary: If I could complete one or two of the above, I would consider this event successful.

Goal: Add 25k words to my multi-chaptered fic.
Title: Trilateralism
Rating: E
Warnings: Graphic violence and death, physical and psychological trauma, mild sexual content, degenerative illness, self harm, depression, contemplation of suicide, explicit language, major spoilers for the Mystery Train arc (Files 818-24/Episodes 701-04) and beyond, includes events from the movies up to Movie 19: Sunflowers of Inferno. I think I just about covered the spectrum except for explicit sex…
Characters: Kuroba Kaito/Kaitou KID, Kudou Shinichi/Edogawa Conan, Hakuba Saguru, Hattori Heiji, Vermouth/Chris Vineyard, Gin, Vodka, Snake, Spider, Chianti, Korn, Rum, Ano Kata, Bourbon/Touru Amuro, Haibara Ai/Miyano Shiho, ...? I'm still adding to this list... -.-;;;
Summary: In which the Organization activates a new codenamed agent, Kaitou KID discovers chinks in his Poker Face, and Edogawa Conan realizes his time is running out. Major spoilers for the Mystery Train and beyond, includes events up to Movie 19. Canon-divergence. Rated for multiple triggers and explicit language.
Remarks: This fic is essentially a Gosho Boys vs Organization/Syndicate with what I'm hoping will have huge plot twists and surprises. I'm currently on Chapter 15 and am at 120k words so far; my best estimate is around 300k(?) by the time it is completed, according to my sketched-out storyboard. Right now I am maybe(?) a third of the way through my plot outline and do not plan on publishing this until I'm finished writing it out (so don't hold your breath for this one). My guess is that I will have 35-45 chapters when all is said and done.
... um, this fic will so not be posted on the forum because of the warnings and rating...

Those both sound really interesting.
And you could post it on the forum so long as the warnings/rating were prominently displayed at the top. Contests where content has to be suitable for all members to be able to read/vote and the prompt exchange also open to all ages are the only things (that come to my mind right now) that can only go up to a T rating. Otherwise, there just have to be appropriate ratings at the top. This isn't a typical event, so there are no rating guidelines like we normally have.
If you were of a mind to share, anyway. It would probably be hell to reformat that much text on here by the time you get all 300k done and are ready to publish.

At the rate I'm going, it might take another year or two before this thing is done. I hope I maintain the motivation to finish this. -.-;;; And good luck on writing yours, Addy01 and Mikauzoran! I'm cheering for the both of you!

Bit late for the post but well, it's something stuck on my phone lately so I thought I'll take another stab at it (yes, I write on my mobile rather than a laptop/PC because my phone has more processing power than my computer).
Name: Once Upon A Time... (I probably need to rename it. It sounds too much like the TV show)
Rating: T (I think)
Warning: Fairy tale & DCMK fusion, possible deaths (it's fairy tale. If I use the Grimm Brother's version, it'll probably be dark as well. The Anderson fairy tales are slightly better, but still mostly a tragedy)
Characters: Everyone (I need to do a blanket, main pairing is dependent on each story, but since I'm writing that epic fic since the beginning of the year, it'll probably turn out to be Kai/Shin since it's stuck in my mind lately)
Synopsis: A re-telling of the classic fairy tales, it'll take inspiration from both the original and the Disney version.
Chapter 1 - Kaito & the 7...uh...SEVEN Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away lived a King and Queen. The Queen wished for a child to be bright like the stars at night, guiding the lost and protecting them from danger, strong enough to protect his people but gentle enough to show mercy to those who deserve it, talented at his gifts as bestowed upon by the heavens but humble to know he is not above the people. Above all else, the child is to be like the King, respected and much loved, adored, and honoured by the people. The child was blessed but the family wasn't for the King, on a trip to their neighbouring kingdom, fell upon the paths of misfortune and he was never found. The Queen, saddened by the lost, focused all her efforts on her child and knew she had to provide a male parental figure to balance her child's mentality. She seek out the presence of the son of a Duke, who happened to be performing in the celebration, not knowing this Duke-to-be also had a ulterior motive.
Notes: I actually just finished the part about the celebration so there's still quite some ways to go. I think it's only 1/4 finished and I'm already at 5000 words. Since it's all on mobile, I can write during travel. Though trying to digest all the information about the different interpretation to fairy tales that's the difficult bit. I have some ideas about the dwarves (I wouldn't call them that but...sticking with the theme and all). There will be NO songs involved, I refuse to go down that path (so my dwarves will not be singing High-Ho, nor will Snow White be singing into the well). I know it's not so original but it's been a document on memory and I wanted to at least let it turn into something worthwhile. Out of all the half baked ideas and unfinished documents, this was the most promising for me to finish and hopefully my creativity will keep up with me this time.
Goal: Finish this chapter by the end of Nov, and maybe sketch out an idea for the next chapter (a bit stuck on which fairy tale to go for so I'm still looking, though I'm leaning towards Cinderella, Fa Mulan, or Sleeping Beauty)

UPDATE: and mental health issues, including suicide and depression Rating: M-rated for language. Other than that, the content itself should be T-rated. (Again, No Smut/Porn! Promise!) Update Week 1: 1) managed to reuse some of my earlier writing that i thought i had to scrap (as mentioned before this is my second attempt writing this.) *yay* 2) Also trying to incorporate more POV from other characters, currently its rather Shinichi-centric and it doesn't feel like it's telling the whole story as fluently as it is....at least at this point. 3) Action scenes are hard. 4) Just to be safe, i should had that some parts of my fic might be a trigger , and there's mental health issues to explore including suicide and depression. That's the plan anyway. where it will all pan out nicely? *shrug* (I'll update the warning sometime soon) 5) I'm also wondering if I should/can fit Sera into the fic. i'd imagine she'll be hanging around, but i haven't got a feel enough of her character enough to know where I can fit her in to add value to the fic.... 6) As a big case, i'm adding in quite a few OC that's related to the case. Victims, witnesses, suspects, criminal...Getting hard to keep track of the names and now had to have a list handy in case i wrote the wrong name. 7) formatting, I'm having like a first part of each chapter (keeping it less than a quarter of a chapter) to be flash backs prior to the case that conan's getting himself involved in this fic, and the second part to be at current time. the first part will be reusing the stuff i wrote in my first attempt, which i think wasn't flowing enough to make a coherent fic. but i do need a background to establish the setting of the fic...so i don't know whether it will be too confusing...have anyone tried writing stories with multiple flashbacks before? I'll say maybe i'm at 20%? the bulk of the writing is just adding content to the whole and i would hve to go back to smooth things over.

Week 1 Status: 1.5k/25k words
I think I'll follow Addy's format and do a weekly check in. So thus far, I've added a measly 1.5k, though to be honest I've become rather engrossed in watching Code Geass at the moment. But regardless, I think at least this part of the chapter will come fast because it's focused on a confrontation I've been waiting ages to write about.
Mikau, just so you know I love you and anyone else who supported the Finish It! event for giving us a month to work on our own fics for once.

I need to check in when I get a moment to actually sit down at my laptop. I've been operating solely on my phone this week, and it makes it hard to accomplish things. :/
I am making progress, though! I wrote a 3,300ish RanKai fic that I need to polish up and post, and I wrote a little bit on my AiKai fic. I'm kind of bored with that at the moment, though, and the RaiKai/Kaito becomes Shinichi fic is kind of distracting me right now. I started writing it, and it's absolutely horrible (No. For REALZ this time. Not just my usual "everything I do sucks" mindset.) But I think it'll get better soon. Once I get Conan on set and then Yukiko and Yuusaku and finally Ran. Then I know things will get really interesting, but until then, I'm just going to keep muddling through, I guess. :/
And I guess it's okay that I'm at least writing something, even though it wasn't exactly what I had in mind at the outset of this event.
Thank you! It's good to be loved! ^o^ I'm glad this seems to be going well for people this far. Maybe we need to do this kind of thing again next year, if people find it beneficial. I think it's good to take a break every once in a while and just focus on a few things instead of trying to juggle three different contest entries, a prompt exchange fic, and non-contest writings all at once.

GOAL: To get at least 2 chapters of Switched completed and posted.
Title: Switched Summary: Shinichi turned his head so fast that he almost gave himself a crick in the neck. Conan sat not far from him, holding a shining gem up to the moonlight. Except that kid wasn't Conan. It was Kid with a capital K, otherwise known as Kaitou 1412, the jewel-stealing Phantom Thief. Oh, hell. He was so screwed. Rating: T Genre: Friendship/Humour Characters: Shinichi, Kaito (and many others) Read on FFN here. --- So, I'm actually going to be crazy busy during November. I've also started a new story for a different fandom (doh) and have been working on some of my other WIPs (though these are for different fandoms). Because of that, I decided to aim for something realistic and just stick to getting two chapters written. I'm not even sure if I will manage that, so hopefully this thread will keep me motivated. I need it. As for my weekly update, I've written over 10,000k in the past week. None of that has been for DMCK, so I don't know if that counts ...

Week 1 update Not so productive week in terms of writing... I'm finding some difficulties in trying to keep a whimsical tone to the story so that it'll sound like the fairy tales of old. The good news is I've finally introduced my 'evil queen' so I'm hoping my story can finally take off. Though the downside is I'm struggling a bit with the 'conflict' parts of the story. And I'm still sitting on edge regarding how much of the original/Disney story plot I should incorporate.

Update Week 2 Not much writing done for last week, with Real Life sending faecal matter up to the ceiling fan. The clean up's a B***. Other than that, I thought I should specify that the 'case' is more leg work for Conan than the usual deductive shebang we see in DC. Should i not write it as 'case' then? Also, trying to make the progression of Conan and Kaito's relationship more smooth and realistic. currently, it looks like Kaito's just popping out off the blue like Jack-in-the-box. Fingers cross for more time and energy to write this week.
