*gets curious* *looks up episode 295 even though that was probably just a random number Mikau chose* Apparently no one died in episode 295, actually XD Ran got kidnapped and there was a plot to murder an announcer for a tennis match, but no one actually died for once . . .

Yeah, that one was the Smash of Love and...Determination, wasn't it? I liked that one.

And then everyone who's ever died over the course of the series, and the Black Organization, and the FBI jump out and go...
"Smile! You're on Candid Camera!"
(Someone actually made a version of that as a joke ending to Death Note a while back, but I can't find it. Might be lost forever.)

ach. jeez, this is really making me on edge, and if things don't turn out as hoped, I may have to depart from my current position of supporting-canon-as-much-as-possble-when-writing. anyway, I guess it's down to crossing our fingers and hoping for the best. ...and resorting to fanfic fluff to cover up things when needed.

Aoyama sensei, your mere suggestion that Toichi Kuroba was not murdered seemed to have incited the ire of your fan. If you are reading this (I know you don't), I have some suggestions on damage control (i.e. how to prevent DC fanatics from sending death threats to you). You should always make the best out of the worst. If Toichi Kuroba faked his death - It would be because he was evil all along and wanted to continue his evil profession ,whatever it might be, full time (Rule of Drama and prevents Motive Decay on Kaito's part, as it would give our protagonist a whole new motivation and plot)
- Or Toichi was an idiot who thought faking his death would protect his family (but once Kaito learns of this fact, then what would be Kaito's motivation to continue stealing? Save the world?)
Toichi Kuroba died from an accident - He stepped on a banana peel and slipped, he fell backward and knocked his own head, the concussion killed him. (Would cause motive decay on Kaito's part, a large part of his motivation is to avenge his supposedly murdered father) Look on the bright side, MK is largely a comedy at least make Toichi die in the most absurd way possible, right?
I think a lot of people don't like the idea of Toichi being alive as it will cause decay of Kaito's motive of becoming a thief, but if you insist on pursuing "Toichi wasn't murdered" route maybe you should just embrace the Kaito's inevitable motive decay. Stop making him such a righteous thief, make him continue thieving because he begin enjoy it, make him more of a bad guy instead of a good guy.

hmm he could still continue his thieving to find Pandora or to expose people who are doing shady dealings like his mom did or something, but yeah half of his motivation would go down the drain if his dad is alive. orz
but damn now I want to draw a comic of Kaito's reaction...

*Patiently waiting for the comic*
I should've trusted my friend's word "Don't expect anything from Aoyama Gosho. He'll blow your mind."
But I think that's the interesting part of a detective/mystery story, right? I mean, you'll never know until the story ends ;; *self murmur

The spider rp blog (Raifuu) recently posted something about Toichi's character and I really liked it so I thought I'd share it since it's kinda relevant. (Since this thread is for interview translations as well as discussion) link

//sighs// I see the point about kaito's motive decay. crossing my fingers in hopes that hakuba will somehow catch wind and set him straight, or conan will kick a soccer ball at him hard enough to knock that idea out of his head. kaito being a full-blown criminal is, admittedly, a very fun idea to consider, but I wouldn't want it to be done in canon. maybe a really good fanfic writer. or even just any writer, actually.
aaand how the plunny is staring at me. it looks hungry. halp.
maybe he won't because then he'd be betraying aoko even more...

I understand Raifuu's point, but in the main argument . . . "The man clearly meant for the kid to become the thief by showing him the room after a set-up like that, and then gave him zero information about what anything meant. Not why he chose to steal, not why he got killed..." And then this . . . So, I think Toichi was trying to give Kaito information about everything, including why he chose to steal and became Kaitou Kid, but that just didn't turn out the way it was supposed to.

I was skimming over the posts in this thread and... THIS THOUGH. The only person who knows what Toichi could have recorded there is Toichi, himself. Gawd forbid if he was actually trying to confess to his son that he's an active member of the organization and went into hiding cos of it and had someone help him fake his death, or... or... or worse, he had his wife in this whole crazy thing and kept not only Kaito but also Jii-chan in the dark all this time... or, or... if he's gonna tell him about Pandora and it turns out he actually possesses it and is in the secret room somewhere *pokes Nat-cchi* That, or maybe he just wants to let it all out in the open and tell Kaito what Kaitou Kid's purpose is... AND THEN NOT GO AROUND TAKING REVENGE FOR HIS SAKE (this is my still-hopeful part of mind speaking. It's just too cruel if it turned out Toichi is giving his son a really traumatizing memory... something worse than fish) Gawrsh, how could I have forgotten how different this and the special was?! *knocks self on head*

I think by now many people have recognised a trend in many parent child relationships in the DCMK world, they are utterly dysfunctional. Shinichi's parents basically abandoned him in Japan Ran's had to take care of her incompetent father Kaito's mom is mysteriously absent almost all the time Aoko's dad is a workaholic and her mom's missing for whatever reason Hattori's dad seem to have minimal interaction with his son, they do not look close at all Ai and Akemi's parents are more busy with their science projects then they were with their children Eisuke's dad was a CIA agent, a job with relatively high mortality rate within the realm of fiction. His mom died early I will wager my monthly payment of Bourbon and coffee that somewhere down the line we will learn that the Akai family had crappy parents too I seriously wonder what kind of relationship Gosho Aoyama has with his parents. And I am really glad I am not born in the DCMK world. *nods* Perhaps the only sane... or close to sane... parent in the series is Sonoko's mom-- whoops, no wait, she supposedly shot "Kid" in her debut appearance (although in later episodes we see her actually caring about who Sonoko ends up marrying... or maybe it's got something to do with the whole inheritance thing again...?). Her dad is fine, too. I find his fanboy tendencies really cute :3 Oh, oh wait! Another contender for "The Most Sane Parent in the DCMK Universe Pageant" is Kazuha's dad! He's as sane as I think he is... I... guess? well, yeah... *nods* He didn't go ahead and drive drunk during that one episode (can't remember the title but it has something to do with the Osaka castle). Yeah I guess he's still right in the head
