So a while ago someone mentioned in chat that we should have an event for finishing works in progress and people seemed to think that was a good idea.
Would you guys want to take November off from contests in order to have a WIP finishing event, or does anyone have any ideas about how we could best carry something like this out?
Thoughts?

Personally, I just finished the WIP I've been struggling with the last five months yesterday, so I can't really participate here, haha But it sounds like a good idea regardless. November for me will pretty much just consist of reading for my exams so I will probably not participate in anything. Could be our very own Camp NaNoWriMo - if I remember correctly that should be in November this year, no?

Well good for you. But do you mean to tell me that you don't have a single half-finished piece or a contest entry that you started, lost the drive to complete or it got so long that you couldn't use it after all but have thought, "I should go back and work on that again someday"? I thought we all had a folder of half-finished WIPs somewhere. ^.^; That's the kind of thing I had in mind for this event. It doesn't have to be a massive piece you've been struggling with for years. It could just be an old SS Contest entry or a half-finished one-shot or something like that.

Honestly? No. Most of my stories are abandoned for a reason. Haha. I only started writing fanfiction at all after I joined here, and I've only participated in 4-5 theme's so far. I'm not that much of a writer after all! But I think an event like this will be good for everybody else.

I have got 3 long WIP fics that i'm hoping to finish one of them soon. hahaha.
My suggestion: at the start of the month, submit the sypnosis of the fic you'll be working on and how long you're expecting it to be. and submit a link to the fic before the deadline. Deadline 30 Nov? (I assume if it's like a twenty chapter fic, not everyone would have the time to upload it on the forum by the deadline, with all the formatting adjustments to be done.)
Not sure how this will work for everyone, but since it's kinda declaring what we're working on to the world, it's kinda giving an accountability to the writers to finish it before the deadline?

That's a good idea, Addy! That could work.

I certainly have a lot of projects I need to finish. While I doubt I will have the time to actually finish anything in November (all long chaptered fics) making time to focus on one project would probably be good for me. Who knows? I might even get Switched close to being complete.

In that case, would it help if we add another clause, like -
1) i plan to finish three chapters this month; 2) i plan to complete 90% of the fic?; 3) i plan to complete this fic by the deadline.
and declare it when we make our submission?

I think just having some kind of goal stated would be sufficient wether that be a certain number of chapters, a percentage, a specific number of words, or even just getting to a certain event or arc in the story.
We could even work on multiple pieces, aiming to get a certain amount done on each or finishing multiple smaller pieces. Each individual would have to think about how realistic those goals would be, but...I definitely think publicly declaring a goal for accountability's sake is a must.

I really like this idea, though that leaves me with... *counts* ... too many options, some of which are my LONG multi-chapter fic and a few sequels for existing stories. But it'll be really nice to have some time to write stories that aren't prompted by contests and the like, since for me when a contest starts up my brain goes into a flurry of activity focusing on the prompt instead of what I've had sitting on the back-burner for forever. Accountability is a must; I agree. Plus, doing this will give people a little sneak peek at what we're all working on if there's a fic that you're interested in.

Okay. I think we'll give this a go then. I'll start it up the day Haunted fics are due, and we'll have the whole month of November to devote to our neglected WIPs.

Oh gosh. I'm still stuck with the Haibara chapter. There's a reason I haven't written anything on MTEC for 5 months I wouldn't post it even if I got a chapter or two written there unbeataed. I think I'll just spend November reading for my exams instead! Haha. Also Boo, A finished 'Switched' would be brilliant!

Ohh. Just thought of this, if we need to get our work beta'd, do we have to do it in nov or could we be given a leeway after nov for our beta to beta the fic?
