As we don't yet have a thread to talk about instrumental music, I thought I'd create one. feel free to talk about evil precise of music, what instruments you play, theory, cool sheet music or whatever. So, little intro into my music: I play the the piano and clarinet as my two main instruments. I just started oboe lessons, and learnt the trumpet and trombone a few years ago but haven't continued due to not owning my own instrument. I have played a veriety of music styles on clarinet, and mainly do classical and movie/game/anime themes on piano. I've been playing clarinet for 6 years now, and piano for around 4 years. Anyway, with ANZAC Day coming up on Saturday in Australia, I've had to practise marching while playing the clarinet. I think I'll be right once I memorise the music, but I keep on falling out of step. And my glasses keep slipping so I can't see the signals the drum major signals with the long stick thing (you can tell this is my first time in a marching band) clearly. Looks like I'll have to actually manage to put my contacts in but all the music is in two four so in theory it is left foot, right foot, for the beat and then that is one bar over. It is quite fast though.

That's cool! I'm sure you'll get it! Yeah, I hate it when my glasses slip down, especially when doing active things. We just finished the Jazz unit in dance class, so I had to spot when doing pirouettes and chaines. But when I wore my glasses, they would always slip partway down, so the spot I was looking at was half clear and half blurry. Very disorienting -.- Anyway! For my writing class in school last semester, I gave myself a prompt to write to an instrumental song. To make sure there wouldn't be any connotations, I chose a random song from a random anime that I hadn't even heard of before, Overflowing Emotions from Amnesia. I took it as a sad song, as the story that resulted from it can attest (It probably still needs editing, but . . .): {Dont have to read it, but here it is if you want to} Satoshi collapsed on his bed and looked at the ceiling. He closed his eyes, but the image wouldn’t leave his mind. A little girl. A girl that he had thought of so often as a little sister. Unwillingly, his mind continued the memory. She was hugging Satoshi, looking up at him with a smile. Tears flowed down his face, the arm over his eyes failing to block them. The scene changed. The little girl grabbed Satoshi’s hand and pulled him along. “Come on, Nii-san! Let’s go, let’s go!” He laughed. “Okay, okay, I’m coming!” They ran down the cobbled sidewalks together. Satoshi grimaced. His hands shook. He didn’t want to remember this. They turned a corner. A shortcut through the town that they had taken many a times to get to the ice cream shop, like they were doing now. No! Don’t go that way! The little girl went through a hole in the wire fence. Satoshi started following, but got stuck. “Wait!” he called out. She didn’t hear him and continued on her way. If only, he thought. If only he hadn’t gotten stuck in that fence! If only they didn’t decide to go get ice cream that day. If only there was a storm that forced them to stay inside. If only . . . By the time Satoshi got out on the other side of the fence, he was afraid the little girl had gotten lost. But she had come this way many times, so he continued on their route. No! He turned right. No! Don’t! He stared in horror as a muscular man with cuts all over his head held the bloodstained little girl by her shirt, forcing her up in his face. “You saw us,” he said, though no companion was there. The girl struggled in his grip. Disgusted, he threw her forcefully into the concrete wall in the alley. She didn’t move. “KAYA!!!” Satoshi cried, anger filling through him. “Kaya!” he called again as he ran up to her. “Kaya . . .” he said, collapsing in front of the girl who was no longer breathing. “Kaya . . . Kaya . . . Kaya . . .” Suddenly, he turned on the man who had thrown her. “NO!!!” he yelled, charging at the man. As he ran, the picture slowly, slowly faded out . . . “Kaya,” Satoshi whispered to himself. But no matter how much he did, she would never come back. He started breathing unevenly. No, stop it. Don’t cry more than you already are. But his body wouldn’t listen. He started sobbing. Kaya!!!
(P.S. Kaya means "resting place")

oh - does anyone know yiruma's songs? they're really magnificent, especially the more popular "river flows in you", "moonlight", and "kiss the rain". I'm pretty sure "kiss the rain" has become the background to the hunger game's "rue's lullaby", actually...
as for me, I've been playing the piano for - 11 years, I think? maybe 12, at this point. I've only played the violin for five non-consecutive years, though - three years, then a two year break, and then two years now for my school's orchestra. I suck at violin but I manage to get by with piano >.> if only I could practice as much as I used to...
natsumi, it's very catchy - although the paragraph's kinda clumpy and I think it would work better with paragraph breaks.
actually, geeky, if I don't have my glasses I can barely read the music on my stand in orchestra XD since we never move while playing, we don't have to worry about that, thankfully.

I know, but it was a very informal thing, and I wasn't really caring too much about it. I was mostly paying attention on the words, not it needing paragraph breaks. Actually, just looking at it now as I put it in, it bothered me a bit that it didn't have any paragraph breaks, but I wanted to keep it as close to how it was before, so I didn't change i.

Thats so cool I've definately heard 'river flows in you before', someone performed it on band tour last year or the year before. I actually started learning piano when I was 6, but I never practised and had a 6 year break until I started again from the beginning. Practise can be hard to sit down and do, it is so easy to forget about. I sometimes forget about my clarinet, but the piano is right beside the tv in the lounge room so I just practise durning the ads on TV. So sad Natsumi! But fitting of the angsty trend lately... (Why do we have an angst trend? More fluffiness is needed) It'd be cool to write to an instrumental song though. ... It also seems like we are all pretty much blind. Yay... Glasses can be so annoying, but I prefer them over contacts, mostly due to my lack of ability to put them in in a reasonable amount of time. I'm not going to wake up half an hour earlier each day to put contacts in.m

Yiruma has some really beautiful songs - I also love Ludovico Einaudi (with his songs I always feel like they're telling a story, here's one example) and Roberto Cacciapaglia (' Wild Side' is just magical). I don't really play any instruments myself though, used to play the flute when I was younger and occasionally I try to learn piano, but I'm too impatient to go through with it - I can play half of 'Für Elise' and that's it Then I wanted to learn the violin and bought one but now my brother has it (after he was so devastated about losing his own violin I just couldn't say no) and dunno, I didn't devote much time to it and I'm half sad that I can't practice and half glad because I know it's in the hands of someone who can actually play on it and loves doing so. My brother is definitely the musician in the family - he's ridiciuosly talented. He picks up any instrument and can play it within an hour. I remember one time he came to visit he played a song on the piano for me that he composed himself and it was just .. amazing, beautiful, sad and full of life at the same time .. I just sat there with my eyes closed and something like an animated movie started playing in my head. It was just one flower, growing and blooming and growing branches and stretching out indefinitely - a bit hard to describe^^, but I wish I could hear it again.

Sadly I don't know any of the artists you guys mentioned (though I did listen to Rainbow's links. I liked Wild Side.) I played flute for a 6 years starting in the 5th grade. I was so excited because we played a lot of fun music, a good bit of it from soundtracks. I still have the simplified and really basic sheet music for the Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Titanic themes. In 6th grade I don't remember much of what we played except for our spring concert, which was full of Disney music because my school had this thing where at the end of the year, those with good grades got to go to Disneyland (I was living in California at the time) and perform a couple of our pieces. My intermediate band played Pirates of the Caribbean theme and Supercalafragalistaexpialadotious in the morning. Then we got to spend the rest of the day going on rides and exploring the park. From 7th to 9th grade my family had moved to the military base in Iwakuni Japan where I had the awesomest teacher. It was a lot of fun to play there because we mostly played music for fun. There were no nearby bases to have competitions with, so we had combined Spring concerts with the Sasabo Naval Base's high school band each year. Sadly my love for band died when my family returned state side to Virginia. In comparison to my laid back base school in Japan, my Virginian public school was very competitive and put a lot more emphasis on learning scales and marching band and competition. I quite after one year. I don't play much these days, but this past winter as I was moving out of one bedroom and into another in my house, I found my flute and sheet music again and played for about an hour. I'm a little rusty, but for the songs I really enjoyed playing I can still play them decently well. If anyone were to look at my itunes, though, they'd see that my love for instumental music has not died. 1/3 of my music library is soundtrack/musical score music from Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, the Miyazaki movie soundtracks, Pirates of the Caribbean, to all of the Marvel Avengers Verse movies (just to name a few). I also have (of course) an album of Detective Conan music. I'm also really big into Lindsey Stirling (check out her Phantom of the Opera medley) and The Piano Guys ( BATMAN MEDLEY!).

I started off not wanting to practise either, but I fuess I was just lucky that my school was massive in music (only around 5 students in grades 5,6,7 would be left at school when we were on music camp.) and kept us really accountable for our practise ame gave us fun music at the same time. I found that once I got past my first year and started to get better, I wanted to practise because I could play cooler music You really just need to get past the beginning stage, and then it gets a bit easier. The music itself is harder, but you generally want to be able to play it more and so try on your own... Or maybe I just am a weird person who likes challenges... Rainbow cupcake - Wow, you're brother sounds amazing. Violins can sound great in the right hands Shara - I did most of those scores in school too. It feels so epic to play ^~^ *watches Lindsey Stirling link* Wow, she's amazing!!! I love the phantom of the opera, and the instruments she uses work surprisingly well together. I wouldn't have thought a bass guitar and violin, but hey, it sounds great. And I saw some of the other songs she did in the suggestions bar and ended spending half an hour listening and watching her. So good! I've heard of the piano guys, but I'll save that marathon til later

Oh I am sooo loving this thread!~
Also, I feel envious with people who can play the violin. I play the guitar, but not necessarily the instrumental kind... maybe now and then but not always.
I have a soft spot for classical music (Although I must admit I'm not an expert at remembering each and every classical piece I hear; I'm terrible with remembering names! xD) and OSTs (doesn't matter where it's from, for as long as it's catchy and emotionally moving). I hear a lot of wonderful ones from Jdramas and Kdramas and a few select ones from anime and video games (I have Kingdom Hearts Piano Collection on my mp3!~). Joe Hisaishi is one of the many notable instrumental persons I respect (I mean come on! He brought more magic to magical Ghibli pieces~)
And may I just add how I loooved the MK1412 OST and I so wish the album will come out sooner!~
Instrumental music in general calms me and gets me in touch with my inner nature loving child. But I'm more of a listener than a player, and I can't read sheet music at all (I can read tabs, though, LOL), so... *sigh* I envy you guys... xP

heyy, so, one of the benefits of being a very active competitive rhythmic gymnast is that I get to hear all this awesome music from other people's routines, and I recorded a few ones - low quality because iphone voice memo, sorry - but I was wondering if anyone knows the names of these songs? reminder that a lot of them are edited (as in snippets taken from different parts of the whole and pasted together pretty seamlessly) because routine music's supposed to have certain traits and be a certain length, so - yeah. but if anyone recognizes them, lemme know? //baby dragon eyes//

I'm pretty sure the first one is the theme song from "Requiem for a Dream", or at least it sounds very similiar. Don't know about the other two though.

No problem. But now the second song is driving me nuts, because I'm pretty sure I know it from somewhere, but I can't for the life of me figure out what song it is or where I heard it. Must find it, for my own sanity if nothing else.

I'm doing the redetsky march in Symphony too! But I'm playing the clarinet. We have to switch alternate fingers so often it's really hard, but fun. Which part are you playing?
And the second one I think is a theme form a movie or game...? I recognise it too but just can't place it. The third I have no idea.
