I just finished my first composition!!! Yay~ I'm pretty happy with it, I had to do it for an assessment task but we had literally no limitations to what we could create. It was different, but fun. I spent so much time editing and switching up parts and creating new ideas and it was just incredible. It somehow ended up being a classical style piece for two pianos. Anyway, I was just really excited about having completed something like that. I have so much more appreciation for composers now I know how much time and effort it takes to write everything even if the ideas come straight away.

I've been dabbling in original composition for about six months now...? But so far they've all been nothing but piano pieces. Most of them are incomplete DCMK fansongs, too, so....haha. I'm hoping I can work on at least a piano-violin duet for my friend and I to play at a Christmas competition, though, but it takes soooooo much time and effort. Cries quietly. (Transcribing songs, on the other hand, not quite as hard. Kind of a cop-out, but not as hard.)

Oooh, awesome!!! That's so cool. I love Christmas songs. Good luck with that! Do you use a program or write it out by hand?

So far, either have worked out for me, haha. I usually just keep things stored in my mind, tweak them a bit here and there. Writing it by hand gives me inferiority anxiety, and I try to notate on Noteflight but it's kind of tricky. I'm going to try and get Sybelius when I get enough money, though. I've used it once or twice and I love it.

I think I used note flight as my program on the computer. I am having such a mental blank I can't even remember what I used ^_^; We were given a list of programs that my school suggested using and I honestly can't remember which one I went with. I have tried Sybelius before, but I've heard it is not easier to use but... How to word it... Has more options I guess? It'd be nice to get a cool program like that. When ever I hand write, I rarely write it out properly and it ends up as some weird code thing. Just a bunch of letter names in two rows with arrows pointing up or down and occasionally the rhythm below it or something XD It takes me ages to just write it out either way, but I like being able to listen to each new change made or the whole piece when you do it in a program. In the (I am pretty sure it was note flight?) program I had to go onto the help guide so many times as all the buttons were really confusing at first and it wouldn't let me change the bar lines from simple bar lines to repeats I guess I'll get better the more I use it. We are doing movie/game music and themes at the moment and doing a short tasking on composing for something with images. It's so awesome. I love music from games and movies and it feels epic getting to do it yourself

No, I didn't just learn a very simple version of the Gravity Falls theme song on the piano while I was supposed to be doing homework, what are you talking about?
Help me, guys. Gravity Falls is taking over my life.

Those are great, I especially like Osananajimi no Kyori. It's just so *squeals* and *squeals some more*. I'm having a hard time expressing my feelings, but I really like it.
Just curious, but where did you record these? I was just wondering because of the people talking in the background^^

Oh, there's a piano study lounge in my dorm, so I use the piano there. There's not really anywhere on campus that I could go play alone, since I'm not a music major and thus not authorized to use the practice rooms in the music department

Oh, I almost forgot, but we were talking about notation and let me just give an example of how I never actually write sheet music I just jot down notes and hope I remember them. I can't even.

So I just remembered that I loved this piece today: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z8y1K0DLdoGustav Mahler was inspired to compose this after seeing a picture of a hunter's funeral procession composed of animals. This is a good version because the video includes the original picture that inspired the piece and some good information about it in the video description. We played this piece in Orchestra back in high school. Good times.
