He slept underwater for two months. So if he were...dead, he would've floated up x'D

O.O They sleep underwater for two months without breathing?! Or do they get air from the water like fish? I'm just realizing that I know nothing about turtles.

After some research, it seems that they can take in oxygen through other means while they are underwater over long periods of time. Like most animals during hibernation, everything slows down so the amount of oxygen they need also lessens. Honestly, I'm amazed at how they could sleep like that for two months. Perhaps they wake up from time to time to get some more oxygen before going back to sleep.

This includes previous pets, right? Well then, here's my lovely Ryouta-kun before we let him go into the wild last summer. It was a really exciting experience for me, cuz it was the first time I was successfully able to take a monarch caterpillar from the wild, raise it into a chrysalis, and let it go after hatching. Him and his sibling: Him chrysalizing himself:

The night before, starting to see him through the chrysalis: In the morning, completely clear chrysalis: And, a couple minutes later, first emergence of Ryouta-kun!

The clear chrysalis is really cool! And Ryouta-kun is very pretty. How long did it take him to start flying?

They stay in the chrysalis (cocoons are for moths) for a couple weeks. I forgot how long exactly Ryouta-kun stayed in his, but around that time.
As for how long it took for him to start flying, as soon as he fully pumped up his wings after coming out of the chrysalis (which might take a few minutes, or an hour, I forgot) he's ready to fly.
Oh yes, and we let him go the same place that we found him, so we didn't mess him up too much at all. He still got to live where he grew up ^-^

*Cocks head to side* How is a cocoon different from a chrysalis? Are they made of different material? Hn. I'm finding out all sorts of things in this thread! ^o^ I'm also finding out that I don't know anything about turtles or bugs. ^.^;

Ikr? XD Absolutely beautiful. And I rarely get to see monarchs for very long, especially that close and with their wings open, so this was awesome for me ^-^
Cocoons are what moths spin around themselves. It's more of a thread-like substance. Sometimes moths will wrap leaves around themselves, but there'll still be the silky substance inside sealing them off. Chrysalises, however, are what butterflies molt into. Those are much harder, since it's basically a modified exoskeleton.
