Truth. I'm glad the people at this forum seem to be a bit more laid back. Shipping wars are annoying.

I was witness to the great Harry Potter shipping wars of the early 2000's. *shudders*

Haha, same here. I actually did want Harry/Hermione to be canon, but I could never understand why people felt the need to attack each other in this weird, over-the-top battle to prove whose ship was better. In the end, I ended up not caring about any of the supposedly 'potential canon' pairings and just went to fanon land to amuse myself.

Oh yeah. Its sort of sweet of Rowling regretted not making Harry/Hermione a thing after finishing the last book. Though, I don't get how the series could have gone anywhere else. Who is Ron supposed to end up with? That weird chick from the sixth book,..erh. Lavendel Brown? There honestly aren't any more female characters for Ron to hook up with, except for his sister. And that's just no. I've never honestly cared too much about the canon ship in HP though.

See, the thing that gets me is why every character needs to be matched with someone anyway. The girls end up feeling more like trophies, or it's like it's somehow this tragic thing for a character not to be romantically paired with someone. I don't like that.

That's truee... The only character who never ended up with anyone (at least of the popular ones) were McGonagall, Snape, Dumbledore and Sirius. Though, the entire point with Harry Potter is 'Love is the strongest power in the world', and a happy ending is finding that someone to spend the rest of your life with and have kids ect. I agree though, with you. Makes us feel like failures if you dont end up with anyone. God knows my family is constantly yipping at my heels wanting me to settle down, even if I'm still 21. My parents had two and a half kid at my age.

They all died except McGonagall ... (I shouldn't find this funny)
Honestly, I think when it's a story about kids that the whole 'find your forever companion' is really stretching it. It's why I like Catherine Fisher's books. Her romance is usually hinted at in a more organic way and not exactly set in stone, which leaves me feeling much more satisfied than the forced 'now kiss and be happy' ending rubbish we often get. That, and (as I said before) I can't stand it when the girl comes across as a trophy. It's all 'yay, you defeated the bad guy, now go get your woman'. Or, in someone like Ron Weasley's case, it's all 'oh, you've been feeling insecure and woe is me all this time. We better give you the girl to smooth your ego.'
Not that I don't like Ron. I just find that side of things a bit icky.

I don't think I've read anything about Catherine Fisher. But I do agree wholeheartely. I'm not too fond of romance and forever after. I prefer reading books that aren't strong on romance - lacking them alltogether and focusing on the storyline instead.
But books written for young adults in general, usually have that happily ever after romance crap going on. I can understand the apeal, just not my thing.

Her books are great. I highly recommend. And yeah, I'm the same. I don't mind a bit of romance, but I'd rather it not feature at all if it's just going to be poorly developed or annoying.
That said, I tend to be less nitpicky when it comes to manga (especially ones like DCMK), because you kind of know what you're in for from the beginning.

I generally agree with Boogum. Canon shipping is all fine and dandy, but a too-heavy focus on romance as the end-all-be-all really doesn't cut it. It also propagates this idea that if you don't end up finding a partner, you're a failure in some way, which I just don't buy at all.

Hooray for one of the most shipping wars-free DCMK place in the interwebs I have ever stumbled upon!~ Let's give ourselves a giant cyber group hug, people! *HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGS*

I'm a canon DCMK shipper first and foremost - I reallyyyyy loathe the way Gosho has gone about portraying ShinRan and KaiAo (ESPECIALLY ShinRan because of how many YEARS that tip toe dance has gone) but as far as the pairings themselves I like then. Particularly for ShinRan, its difficult for me to imagine them with other people simply because I find their feelings and relationship with each other so deeply embedded into their characterization in a way that I feel AWKWARD trying to imagine them with others and without each other - I've tried many times reading recced fic with other relationships for the sake of good reading and I just feel this nagging resistance/feeling of oocness - and I say this as someone who is typically a multishipper. I think ShinRan is a very troubled and problematic relationship because of all the secret keeping, but I ship them knowing that they WILL eventually have to work through the complications.
I do have a caveat though where I'm not completely opposed to ShinRan being shipped with an additional person in a threesome. I have an inclination towards threesomes in general because i find the dynamic potential to be interesting. KaitoShinRan isn't unheard of and I've pretty much dipped into every fic tagged as such because I like exploring Kaito interacting with both Ran and Shinichi, but my pet DCMK threesome is actaually SeraShinRan (which I've yet to actually see in a fic and I REALLY WANT TO). Since Sera has been seen flirting with both Ran and Shinichi at some point (well... Conan anyway) AND seems to be supportive of their relationship, it doesn't break my stubborn ShinRan bias at all and so far I've really enjoyed all her interactions with both of them. Admittedly this is partly due to my interest in Sera and desiring to see her interact more with other characters in general, but I loved the subarc of them having met before and Shinichi and Ran both having felt feelings of nostalgia around her. I couldn't help myself after that. I do appreciate their dynamic as Just Friends too, however.
I definitely think of Heiji as having a crush on Shinichi though, even though I definitely like Heizuha as well. I recently saw a comic about Kazuha trying to get Heiji to realize he's gay because of his massive Kudo crush and having Heiji ponder over it and come bursting back towards her after researching sexuality declaring that he's BI and I was DYING from laughter at how ACCURATE that felt to me.
Kaito is kind of weird because I lowkey ship him with every character he's interacted with (but its not necessarily reciprocal... *cough* Shinichi *cough*) I adore KaiAo and thats definitely the Kaito ship I lean towards the most, but I'm also pretty fond of KaiHaku - I really enjoy their classic rivalry-type dynamic and could see it being A Thing. And a friend of mine wrote a polyshipped KaiAoHakuAka fanfic with every combination between those four being valid in said fic and I really enjoyed reading it. I wish there were more of Magic Kaito just so I could see those four interact more.
....As I write this I'm kind of realizing though, that while I steadfastly ship ShinRan I like the idea of many various characters of any and all genders having onesided crushes individually on Shinichi and Ran...
what else... I skimmed through this thread and I saw someone mention YUKIKO/SHARON(VERMOUTH) inwhich Yukiko is in an open relationship while with Yusaku AND I WAS LIKE YES PLEASE. Clearly their relationship is now very strained because of Plot but I definitely have thought about them having had that sort of relationship during the time which Sharon had been 'alive'.
Oh. And I also ship TakaSato because God they're adorable and THANK YOU GOSHO FOR GIVING US A SHIP THAT DIDN'T DANCE AROUND EACH OTHER ENDLESSLY. And Also wasn't a Childhood friend romance because DESPITE my general canon preference I agree with the sentiment that Gosho is way way too (m/f) childhood friend romance happy.
Anyway that's my piece on DCMK shipping. I'll probably add more if I think about it.
EDIT: IF SOMEONE GAVE ME FEM!SHINRAN OR FEM!KAIAO (or male!ranshin and male!aokai too) I'D BE VERY INTERESTED.

I really laughed at that Heiji-Kazuha comic you just explained xD Do you have a link? I'd love to see it!
I kind of ship Kaito with anyone too... or at least I see potential in him dating anyone, must be because he's so charismatic. My favorite shipping is KaitoxAoko but HakubaxKaito or ShinichixKaito look pretty cool to me too... but with Shinichi I'd rather he be with Ran because she really loves him, and I kind of want her to be happy in the end, it always makes me feel a bit bad for her if she were waiting so long for nothing. Truthfully though I believe Ai and Shinichi make a better couple because it looks to me like the trust and experiences they share goes deeper than when it comes to Ran and Shinichi.
I really find it interesting when people comment on Fem!Kaito because, before Sera's character came out, I actually pictured this out as her (boyish looking, short hair & flatchested so she could pretend to be Kid). She's also unpredictable, very clever, doesn't mind acting like someone from another gender or care when someone mistakes her for a guy, she's really fast and also fond of Conan (can't wait until she meets Hakuba!). Maybe because of that, I'm pretty open with Sera's shippings too

Funny you mentioned that, I actually wrote a short male!ranshin for one of the prompt exchanges. I've seen once or twice a fem!ShinRan, but never Fem!KaiAo. I just realized. Haha. I have a fem!Kaito RP blog that I'm multishipping on, and one of my (future) shipping partners is an Aoko. The mun's lowkey tempting me to change the fem!Kaito fic I'm writing - the basis for the blog - into an AoKai rather than the HakuKai I was planning. I want to see those fem!ShinRans, because I want my faith restored in genderbends, namely fem!Shinichi. Not to be a salty Sue, but a lot of genderbent Shinichi fics fall flat to me, even though I'd kill to read fem!ShinRan or fem!HeiShin where they're both girls.
