As for the rules about how much to post and all that, if you'll read the earlier posts in the thread, the rules and all that have already been set out.
I think your idea is good, Starlight, if we were just doing this collab as a small group of friends, but since it's a Poirot Community thing, I think we should keep it on Poirot so that all of the other members and guests can check it out and join in. When we started, I was going to post in a new thread entitled...whatever we decide to call this thing, and then we could use this thread or start a new one to call dibs on the next part.
I was under the impression that we were doing more of an RP-style story with us all taking turns playing the same characters. As for editing, ^.^; I don't know about you, but I'm an extremely insecure writer as you may have noticed with me always wondering if my work is utter trash or not. I'd probably take offense if someone edited something I had written. Not deliberately, mind you. It'd be more of a "T.T Why did they change what I wrote?! Was what I had not good enough?! Did they not like it?! Do they not like me?! I knew it! I'm a horrible writer! I knew it!" Yeah. I seriously do have a panic attack every time I submit a new story/chapter. It's kind of pathetic, but you know. -.-; That's me. So I probably would withdraw participation if we're going to do it like that. My heart can't take it.
What else? Oh! Yeah. Nowadays I write third person omnipotent, so that's how I was thinking about writing this. That way we could follow the thoughts of multiple characters, going back and forth (not too fast, though. Don't want to give the readers whiplash. ^.^; Haha).
And, assasin8, I think I briefly mentioned this before, but I've been thinking the Professor's house since it's generally a sanctioned place for Tanteidan activities. The yard/house is big enough whereas the Agency or Poirot might be too small for a magic show. I'm sure Kaito could make it work, but I was thinking in a back yard in order to give Kaito lot's of room.
As for keeping the characters "canon", ^.^; I'm afraid I don't know what that is anymore. Seriously. It's coming up on my eleven year anniversary as a DCMK fan and writer, so that's a little over a decade of research, trial and error, backstory crafting, and character development. I don't think I'm saying this right. Let me see if I can explain better: in my head, my Kaito is canon, and I've stopped being able to distinguish between what's canon and what's only canon in my head. It's not something I do on purpose, it's just...I'm old, and I'm set in my ways, and my Kaito will try to play nice with everyone else, but he is who he is, and, well, you all know Kaito. You can't make him be anything other than himself. I've got a couple different interpretations of "Kaito", but the essence of the character is a compassionate, mischievous boy who shoulders a heavy burden. He acts like a cheerful clown, but, on the inside, he's hurting. Would that be a "canon" description?
I guess my question is...you've all read Ponies, right? Or Hakuba Responds...? THAT is my "canon" Kaito. That was me purposefully trying to write canon Kaito. If that's not good enough, maybe I shouldn't participate? ^.^; I don't want to throw the story off.... Maybe I shouldn't participate anyone. It seems like I always have different ideas than everyone else. In the RP too. And then you all agree to do things my way, and I wonder if it wouldn't have been better without me micro-managing everything. :/ Maybe I should go write my own party fic and leave the collab to you guys. It'd probably be more fun. Yeah... *Slinks off*
