Portuguese and Spanish are similar. Portuguese people easily understand Spanish, but usually people from Spain don´t understand portuguese completely. I still wonder if they just pretend or don´t understand... The difference between portuguese and spanish is mainly how to write and read some words. While in portuguese call is "chamar" in spanish you have "llamar". However, for root, pt is "raiz" and sp is "raiz", the only difference being the pronunciation. I believe learning portuguese is always a plus. Brazilian is similar to portuguese too, more than spanish, but they have some specific words and their grammar is slightly different. It´s because they learned portuguse from common people whom spoke badly and didn´t know the rules. Also, you have people all across Africa talking portuguese. If you know portuguese argentinian is easier to understand, not to mention other latin languagues. This is because, strangely, portuguese is one of the languages that still have big latin roots. As a Spaniard who has never learnt Portuguese, I can understand it if even a little. I can't speak it, though, but I think I could understand a basic conversation between two Portuguese people. I have been to Portugal many times, and I could understand pretty well the people around me. Portuguese and Spanish are very similar. I can't tell you anything about Brazilian Portuguese, as I have never heard anyone speaking it, but I don't think I could understand it that well. And, as you say, the difference between Portuguese and Spanish usually has to do with pronunciation and spelling (as far as I know). For example, "Good morning" is "Buenos días" in Spanish ("Buh-eh-nohs-dee-ahs" or something like that for English speakers) and "Bom dia" in Portuguese ("Bom-dee-ah") - they are almost the same. Last time I went to Portugal, I heard someone saying it, and then kept saying it myself to everyone I saw! Besides, one thing is true: Portuguese speakers are said to understand Spanish better than Spanish speakers understand Portuguese. Portuguese speakers, at least the ones from Portugal, tend to be very good at languages because they don't dub series or films for TV. I remember going to a bar in Portugal where the TV was on and watching CSI in English with Portuguese subtitles. if there is any Portuguese speaker here, I encourage them to join the conversation! By the way, I am surprised that many ofyou know/want to learn Spanish. I feel honoured! I'm a native Spanish speaker, so if you ever need help or want to practise your Spanish, I'm here for you!

I believe one of the biggest reasons for the interest in Spanish is that it's one of the two main second languages taught in American public schools. The other being French. Some school teach German too. And like I've mentioned, I've already taken 4 years of it in high school. So there is already a large investment and it would be a good choice to continue. It's a language that's fairly easy to pick up for native English speakers. Also, there is a significant portion of Spanish speakers here. Where I live some places have signs in both languages. And here it's not even as prominent as in other states. I believe there are some small nuances between Spain's Spanish and all the varieties of Mexican and Latin American Spanish. The textbook series we used in school would have each chapter focus on different Spanish speaking countries and had different casts of characters. I think it's really intriguing how the Spanish language and culture expanded and evolved to so many countries as it has. Of course we have to Spain in mind, even if we don't immediately think of Spain for Spanish speakers in America. And I'm sure there's fans here from Europe or wherever that might want to learn so I don't mean to speak for everyone.

Should we start a Spanish Language Study sub-board?
Haha, all this talk about the different kinds of Spanish reminds me of this video my Spanish teacher showed us part of . . . (It goes on a long time so you don't need to watch it all)

I think it would be fun to have a Spanish sub-board. It's been so long since I've had any real use for Spanish. Okay, I guess you can count when I watch stuff in Japanese with Spanish subtitles to get some double studying in. I guess you can also count when I used to work as a florist up until a few months ago; I used to get Spanish speakers in occasionally, and I would do really basic conversations in Spanish while I rung them out, but...I mean, like, a real conversation in Spanish? It's been a long time. I think it would be fun to have a place to practice.

Spanish was part of our curriculum back when I was in high school, and I took Basic Spanish when I went to college. It was also there that I learned a bit of Japanese.
Spanish is a really sweet language in my opinion, and my native tongue doesn't come far-off from Spanish origin (we use Spanish words without even knowing they're Spanish. I only learned they're Spanish when I took foreign lang classes, haha xD). Other than the present tense, though, I know nothing of the past and future tenses and would love to learn them if Time allows me to. XDD
Japanese is hard but I'm still learning it because of the challenge. Although, in my opinion I enjoy hearing Kansai-ben than the standard Japanese and would LOOOOVE to learn it!~
Italian is really interesting too, TBH. Korean is also nice but I learn by ear and have difficulties learning it if I don't get on with learning Hanggul (did I spell that right?) at the first place XDD

I took three years of Italian back in middle school, however most of it has gone over my head by now hahaha. I took nearly a decade of Chinese because my mother believed it would be helpful in the future. Well it did pay off, I can listen and speak mandarin and cantonese almost completely fluently (although writing and reading will always be a problem for me ^^') This is my third year learning russian as well. Japanese would be nice to learn. Watching so much anime has helped me understand a bit more japanese though xD I want to learn Spanish because it's such a common language to learn here in the states, I'm curious

I WANNALEARNJAPANESE!!!!!!! Well, I guess everyone here does... I can really teach Chinese, though, 'cause its my first language... Of course, I'd get a head start on Japanese~ I think the admin should add a thread, even a subboard, on teaching Japanese. I mean, there are plenty of people on this forum that speaks Japanese... Right?

Not necessarily, but there's a thread for a bunch of resources you can use to teach yourself, as well as a thread for asking questions about Japanese in case you're confused on something. Mikauzoran's the Japanese expert on here.
