Unfortunately, I won't have mine ready in time to finish the contest, I'm mostly through the second of whhat I have planned as three chapters. I DO want to finish it though so I'll probably be posting it as its own thing a bit later.

It's a shame you won't make it for the contest, but I definitely encourage you to take your time finishing it and then share it with us once it's done. Your idea sounded really interesting, and I, for one, would like to read it. Please don't rush just to get it done for the deadline.
I don't think I'll be submitting my piece either. I'm at 7,500-ish words right now, and I really only have to finish up the scene I'm on, but I haven't done any editing this entire time I've been working on this, and I'm going to be out most of the day tomorrow, so I think I won't worry about trying to finish for the deadline. I'd much rather have a more polished piece that I'm...well, we all know I'm never satisfied with anything I do, but--you know--satisfied enough with than rush to submit a slopped-over first draft.
I'm having a lot of fun with Hakuba, Haibara, and Kaito, though. ^.^ Maybe this will be the piece I work on during the Finish It! event. I'd really like to see what you guys think and get some feedback. I feel like a lot of the reviews I get are "Good job!", "I loved it!", or "Keep up the good work!", and I feel like I'm not learning and growing from those comments, as thankful as I am that the reviewer took the time and as wonderful as they are to get.
Is that something more like what a beta does, I wonder? I honestly have very little knowledge of what a beta is and does in relation to the author. Are they like an editor? Do you bounce ideas back and forth and go over your outline for the story and do they work with you to develop the piece? I've only ever thought of betas and proofreaders.
Maybe it would be good to have a workshopping event where we all submit a fairly short (maybe 2-4k? or is that long? I'm aware my ideas of "short" and "Sure. I can bang that out in an hour or two" are completely skewed) first chapter of something and then all seriously review each other's pieces. I think we all really long for that kind of thorough feedback where we learned what we did well, what parts fell short, and how we could do better.
But I got on here to remind you guys that entries are due tomorrow. Please forgive my meandering ramble. I'm tired.
So far all four of the fics submitted are good to go, so I'll be starting the vote as soon as I get home tomorrow night, as close to midnight on the Cafe clock as I can. I'll also be launching the Finish It! event then too. Unless I forget. If I do, hopefully you'll all gently remind me. Your mod is tired.

That is what a beta can do, if it is something you discuss with them before you start the edit. They cld tell you if it's better to remove certain parts or if you need to elaborate more or if any part doesnt make sense . On the flip side, beta can just do grammar edits only. So you'll need to discuss with a few ppl to see what they can offer....

Yeah, the issue was I couldn't quite make things gel the way I wanted to. I went through about three or four versions of chapter 2's opening scene before sticking with an edited version of what I started with. That and just normal RL business kept me from getting things the way I liked. For now I plan to go over chapter 1, since I'm no longer bound by a character limit, maybe I can add or throw in something else to help or just keep it as is.

In regards to beta readers, it's pretty much what Addy said. You get what you ask for, really. That said, I will usually point things out even when asked just to focus on grammar, etc.
I don't use a beta reader for my fanfiction anymore, just because I'm not really hung up about quality these days. I just want to get my stories finished. I do think beta readers can be very useful, though. It's really important to find a beta reader who understands your style and can work with you to help polish your piece. Ideally, that's what a beta should be doing.

Would you believe that it's almost ten o'clock at night, and this is the first opportunity I've had to just sit today? And I've been up since six AM. -.-; I swear, next Sunday I'm just going to take the day off and do nothing. I've been too busy lately.
But the poll is now up, and I'm off to start the Finish It! event next. Good luck everyone! We've got some excellent entries this time, so I'm interested in seeing how this will go. Don't forget to vote!

Yes. You usually have two weeks for the longer contests since it's hard to read three to five 8k fics in one week.
