Themed Writing Competition #20: Luck Writing: January 17 - Sunday, February 7 Voting: Sunday, February 7 - Saturday, February 13 Theme selector: ichthyophobia
Theme: "Luck" Optional Prompts:
1) Charmed 2) Bad Luck 3) Superstitions Themed Writing Competition Guidelines
Event Details:Each participant needs to write a short story to be posted by midnight according to the Cafe clock in the Contest Entries section of the Fanfic Library. That's midnight Sunday going into Monday; you have the entirety of Sunday to work. At the end of the writing period, any member can vote for their favorite story. The winner will get a prize and get to choose the theme for the next competition. Make sure that when you post your stories on FF.net that you mention that the story was written for Poirot Cafe's competition to our readers! Let's have fun and advertise at the same time! Prize:Custom designed award badge that you can use in your signature or elsewhere. Guidelines:1. Keep stories relatively short (1,500 to ~5,000, with 300 words TOPS to "wrap it up"), and please post word count at the top of your entry. 2. K-T ratings only. 3. No crossovers. 4. Must be new material, no re-posted stories. 5. Please be fair and courteous when voting and reviewing! This one should be interesting. I'm anticipating many Kaito and Conan entries since when I hear "luck", I think of those two...only they're two sides of the same coin. Have fun with it!

I wish you had waited two more days before posting this challenge. I got an essay to write, but all I can thing about is this darn challenge that instead of starting on my essay, I've already engaged in writing for this. I've taken your words as a personal challenge. You expected many a stories with Katio and Conan, I say ney. I will and am writing something else under the given theme 'luck'.

Eeeeexcellent. I was hoping that by bringing it to people's attention that a lot of Kaito and Conan fics were likely to be written, maybe people would try to come up with something more original for the theme. I've personally got a Hakuba idea, but we'll see if I actually get around to writing anything. I'm kind of trying to focus on my novel at the moment. ^.^; Good luck with your piece!

Thank you! My idea is for Hakuba too though, but it's more a fic about the scientific probability of chances instead of relying on luck alone, but his entire world view get thrown out of the window when Ran appears (the most luckiest person in the DC universe really when it comes to the lottery). Throw a little bit of mischief and Sherlock Holmes, and you got yourself a fic. I just hope I can keep it within the wordcount this time, whenever I write an arch for the 6-8K competition, I always end up with 5K before I see I can't finish it within the wordcount and have to start anew xD I'll just have to scrap all the wild ideas I got and keep it at one long scene-two tops. 5K is absolutely nothing.
Good luck with your novel, hope you get time to write something too!

Does anyone else occasionally fear the wrath of their plot bunnies?

The plot bunnies are going simply rabid for this contest so I might just have to try! It also sounds really fun~!

(LOL, for a moment there my mind read "The plot bunnies are going simply rabbit..." OMGLOLWAT What's happening?! xD)
I'm choosing which to write about from a mental list I made. Forgive me for thinking Kaito. My Hattori idea's beginning to slip through my fingers... m(_~_)m (Oh, maybe I'll try a Masumi-induced fic... or maybe Sherry... hmmm which one, which one...?) OTL

Is there some way to keep the italics when you post something in here? It seems like they all disappear. I posted my attribution, but I had to go back and redo the italics.

Nope. Not to my knowledge. We all have to go back and redo our formatting when we post on here, unfortunately. :/

Cesela (and Mikauzoran ?): Actually, if you can get your text with the HTML formatting tags (from the plain text view of the editor on FFN/AO3, or if whatever software you're using to write has such an export function), you can use an online converter like this one to change the formatting to the BBCode used on the forum, then just paste it in the BBCode editor here (switch from Preview mode right below the text input box) and your italics should be fine! (Theoretically, there are also converters online that change formatted text directly to BBCode, but I've never used them personally so can't say how well they work...) EDIT: forgot to add – HTML tags are the <i> </i> things, while BBCode uses instead.

I think most people copy-paste their work from Word. Does that have the export option you were talking about, presumenothing?

Mikauzoran don't really think Word has the option, unfortunately – admittedly I haven't used it in literal ages, but googling hasn't turned up any obvious way to do it. (I use the Ulysses app on Mac, which has several export options including HTML/ePub/PDF, but can't seem to find any equivalent function for Word...) So the easiest option is probably to copy/paste from Word into a rich text-to-BBCode converter (for example this editor – tried it with some text and it seems to work fine). If that doesn't work, convert from the HTML, which you can get from the editor on FFN/AO3/Tumblr, like I mentioned in my previous post.

So we only got one entry. If you guys want to toss some ideas around for possible theme and corresponding optional prompts, I'll start a poll to decide the next theme on Wednesday. The voting for the next theme will go from Wednesday until Saturday. Thanks in advance!
