So I had absolutely no idea where to put this, so I'm hoping I chose the right spot, aha. Feel free to tell me to move it if it should be somewhere else you think, though. Title somewhat copied from DC Rewatch on tumblr, because I am unoriginal and it's a good title, ok? You should definitely go check their blog out, because the reviews are fantastic and I personally adore reading all of the commentary on the episodes.
This idea basically appeared to me about, say, I think February to March-ish this year when I learnt that Aoyama-sensei stated that 'It hasn't even been a year' since the beginning of the series from Ran's POV during the Shin'ichi Kudo's Aquarium Case. Like everyone else who'd been following this series since back in 2003 when it aired on Adult Swim (or anyone who'd been following it ever, really) my immediate reaction was - Whaaaaat? You're trying to tell me that all of these murders and advances in technology and winter/summer breaks and literally 20+ years of manga content has happened in less than a year? Quite frankly, it sounds ridiculous. But then I really got thinking. Considering the amount of chapters that are out at present - 940 - and the average duration of a single case by way of chapter number - 3 or 4, but for this right now I'm going with 3 - and if we assume that one case happens every day (940/3), its entirely probable that as of today, only 314 days have passed since the beginning of the manga. Aka - less than a year.
Now granted, this is not factoring in cases that progressed more than 1 day for a single case, or even ones that all happened in one day (like the Mystery Train Arc) but span more than 3 or 4 chapters. This is also ignoring all technological advances and appearances of winter/summer in the series.
So, I've decided to buckle my seat belt and prepare for a bumpy ride. I've needed to re-read the series again anyway (the last time I can remember reading chapters 1-600 was years ago) so why not keep note of a few things while I'm at it? Hence what I'm studiously dubbing my Re-Read Project. Also known as, Eli's Adventures in Counting How Many Days Have Passed Since Poor Shin-chan Got Shrunken. And here's how it works.
Guidelines (Posted purely for my own reference and so people can see how I'm counting things, eyy):
1. A day has only passed when we see it get dark outside. If there is no panel of it being night-time before another panel of daytime, we assume the events are happening in the same day.
1a. Within reasonable accommodation. Exceptions to this being if there's a panel stating the date, or the events shown after and not reasonable to have occurred during the same day. Ex. Frames stating [The next day] or a character stating the same, etc.
2. Every case is assumed to have happened within one day of the other, and that's how I'm counting it.
2a. But I am noting comments about days having passed and other either manga-noted or character-stated passings of time. At the end of this I'll have one category for the number of days I've actually counted, and then another for how much time has passed based on that and character comments.
3. I'm not counting flashbacks (obviously).
4. My metaphorical timer automatically stops at the Shin'ichi Kudo Aquarium Case. If no more than 364 days have passed (with a 2-4[?] day leeway for human error because I could miss some things) when I reach this point Aoyama-sensei wins, huzzah!
Wish me luck!
Note: As of this moment I have finished chapter 19 and we are currently 9 days/15-17 days from the (un)fortunate shrinking of Kudo Shin'ichi. And oh my god, I did not remember the billion yen robbery happening that early.
