Is it going to be a problem having two competitions ending on the same day? Seeing as quite a few people seem to do last ditch entries, I'm concerned that having two end the same day will cannibalize people's ability to participate.

The dates just so happened to fall that way. Seeing as the SS Contest has a minimum limit of 500, it really shouldn't be a problem. You can whip out five hundred words in an hour or two even if you're extremely slow, so it shouldn't interfere with participation.

I'm more worried about the AU contest since it requires more effort. People are already jumping on SS #3 since it's a quick thing.
I remember there was concern that Theme #14 wouldn't have enough people, so putting another contest that ends on the same day as Theme #15 seems like it's setting up #15 to similarly pull up short.

It's quite possible. I know whenever I finish something, my brain goes into "I finished a thing" mode that makes it difficult to work on anything for the next few days. However, I think a lot of us who were intending to participate in the other contest have been working on our stories before just now (I hope), so even with a day or two diverted into the super short contest it should be okay.
In any case, I don't think it was deliberate. This is just the way the schedules happened to line up this time around. I think for the next round they should be offset again, so if we have a few less entries than we would've otherwise this time, it's not the end of the world. And changing the deadline for either contest would probably be more drama than its worth.

A crazy humor-induced plunnie is attacking me. I'm... too down in the funk to go ahead and pick it up... Plus it seems like a disgrace to an angst-producing theme (read the other entries and I'll comment on them collectively by saying they're super awesome, btw~) Hn, I dunno...

I don´t know about you, but I decided to go with something less angst-producing this time... After so many angst, people can read my story and recover slightly XD

I would like to incorporate by reference Ichthy's above post. She said it exactly. That's just the way that the deadlines fell this time.
I seriously think it's okay, though. The upper limit for the SS Contest is 1,000 words which really doesn't take that much time. I wrote 2,400 yesterday alone, and I was at work ten hours and still managed to take Noiz for a walk and get the writing done. A lot of people have already finished their SS entries and have the remaining time to work on AU...which they've already had...what? Two and a half weeks to work on? While some people with school and work are genuinely busy, a lot of people have problems with procrastination, so even if I set the deadline for AU back, that doesn't necessarily mean people will take advantage of the time and get their entries done. Regardless of the deadline, people are going to be throwing things together at the last minute. I've learned from experience that that's the way these things go, and I've come to accept that.
I really do think it's okay even if we don't have enough entries to hold an actual vote. The purpose of these contests isn't to crown a winner. It's to have fun and inspire the members to write. Even if they don't finish in time for the contest, they'll have gotten valuable writing practice in, and maybe they'll go on to finish the pieces later at their leisure. If the themed contests inspire our members and challenge them, then they're a success whether there's a vote or not, so don't worry about it so much.
Besides, the bottom word limit for the 5k contests is 1,500 words which isn't much harder to pump out than 1,000 words. There's still plenty of time between now and midnight on the Cafe clock Sunday to finish the AU entries.
I'm actually just starting to get my AU entry down on paper today, and I've already got 1,500 words. I've still got to do the SS entry as well, but I have confidence I'll get them both done in time...provided I settle on a topic for the SS Contest, but... ^.^;
Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I truly do think everything will be fine. So long as people are writing, it's all good. We've already got seven entries for the SS Contest, so I think all is well.

Congrats, KK!!! Sorry I'm late. I'm at the hospital with Noiz, and this is the first opportunity I've had to get on.

Wow, thank you all very much Thank you authors for writing such great stories, and readers for voting. Ten entries is really amazing for a contest. We should all be really proud ^^ Let's have more amazing turn outs next time as well!
