Actually, I have a question too, now that everyone mentions the specific details. What about using a few lines of a song? It isn't a song fic, I just have a character singing it softly to themselves. I know songs have been mentioned in tics before, but I na net stated the name (although it is pretty obvious), just a few lines of the lyrics. It is more a nursery rhyme type song too.... Just with what Mikau said about coming up with your own ideas. I could change the lyrics a bit, but it wouldn't have the same feel as the tune would be lost to the readers. I don't know. I think it's fine, but just wanted to check while I'm still in the middle of writing so it doesn't become a problem if I do need to change lyrics or edit it later.

Well, the thing with coming up with your own ideas is more of an issue here because of the theme. If Ichthy comes up with this really awesome universe of her own, but I rip off something really popular...say One Piece or something, that's not really fair because while she created her own universe for the contest, I just stole someone else's. Because of the theme being AU, the "no plagiarism" rule is necessary here.
Since this is fanfiction, there's no reason you couldn't use song lyrics so long as you give credit in the disclaimer.
Personally, I find song lyrics in fanfiction to be bloody annoying because it's generally not done well or with purpose. I think others share that opinion, and since this is a contest piece, I would discourage you from doing something that might damage the chances of an otherwise worthy entry. I have no official ruling either way, but I encourage you to consider strategy.
In general when considering the addition of a song in a piece, I believe you should consider a few things. Why am I adding this song? Does this add to my writing or is it a distraction to my readers? Should I include actual lyrics or summarize the meaning (example: "Hakuba could hear Kaito softly singing to himself in a daze, perhaps unconscious of the fact that he was singing out loud. Something about shadows and butterflies. Autumn leaves coming to rest on the dark pond below.") or simply mention that the character was humming x song? Is this song an important detail or merely an add on?
I think something else to be considered for those hoping to move out of the fanfiction arena and into the world of "real" writers is: Would I be able to publish this as is? Would my editor make me take it out because of copyright infringement and royalties? If you're thinking about someday publishing, it may behoove you to break bad habits now and get into the routine of avoiding copyrighted material.
Food for thought.

I have a quick question about the confines of "AU." Would Canon Divergence (as in, a character is written to have a power they didn't have in canon, but canon mostly happens and this is added in later) be acceptable for this contest? I have an idea for a character to discover something from their past that will greatly affect their future and I'd love to submit it to the competition, but I'm not entirely sure if it would be acceptable. I completely made up the idea and there's no way it'd actually happen, but it still draws heavily from canon. Is this okay?

Sounds fine to me. The fun part of AUs is that you can change as much or as little as you want, really.

Thanks for responding ichthyophobia! I'm super excited to write this idea because I was starting with another idea, but it became too developed for this contest so I switched to the one I vaguely referenced here~~~ And I totally agree with you, the fun of AUs is the ability to change as much or as little as we want~~

*Considers half-assing something in the week or so before the contest ends*
Naaaaah.
Just curious - anyone going the predictable route and doing a film noir/private eye AU?

Mine's finished except for final read-through. I'll probably take care of that Friday night, or whenever someone else starts putting something up. I don't like being first. >.>

Darn, I ran out of time. I finished most of it but didn't really plan my time well enough between study/housework and writing. Sorry for not saying anything and sort of avoiding the site too around/after the due date, I was busy studying and beating myself up for nor finishing it. Argh. At least I can still vote for everyone else's stories
