An AU. Nice. I really want to do a historical one, but there'd be a lot of research involved.... Unless I do the topic I'm studying in Modern at the moment. Who's up for a murder mystery about the Cold War and Australia in the Kokoda campaign? XD But seriously, this looks really cool and I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with I'll probably end up doing historical or role swap (based on how much free time I have and how cold it is)

*Raises hand* I do. I want to see a Cold War murder mystery.
I'm actually going with a kind of magical/horror type AU. We'll see if I actually end up getting anything done, though. I'm focusing REALLY hard on The Healing Process right now (I've gotten the skeletons of four chapters done in a little over two weeks! ^o^), so I'm really not allotting time to anything else at the moment.
This is going to be fun, though.

Hm, this would be the perfect chance to get that BlackOrgAU!Kaito and Canon!Kaito universe swap done. (Which is technically role swap I guess)

I really like the Cold War idea. I'd be afraid of the research to get it right, but I like it.

Does anyone else occasionally fear the wrath of their plot bunnies?

Hm, I wonder if I'll have time to write without school being an issue.

It seems like Cold War it is then... I have an idea for how he murder is going to be planned out, but just need to research who the victim and killer will be. I'm so excited Also the Azusa as the B-org boss would be awesome. You should definitely do it Laurel!

Question. "Magical AU." By "No crossovers," does that include parodies?

In my mind, that means you can't have non-DCMK characters, and the DCMK characters can't go to the world of another show. I can't give you a more definite answer without more of an idea of what you mean by parody. If you mean having the characters of DCMK and putting them in another show's scenario, then I think that would count as a crossover and thus not be allowed.

I think it would depend on the complexity, personally, though Mikau obviously has the final word. Some fusions might be permissible, if they're understandable to a reader with no previous knowledge of the other thing. For example, what I'm personally working on is actually a magical girl thing, but instead of playing off any specific series I'm playing off the tropes and the genre. I think it could be considered a parody if viewed in the right light, so if anyone doesn't think that's permissible I would like to know that ASAP. But I think more complex worlds (IE Hogwarts, Percy Jackson, His Dark Materials, etc) would take too much space to set up the world itself to be plausible in a 5000 word contest, if you have to assume the reader knows nothing.

I think Ichthy has the right idea. You can do a genre like "magical girl", "super hero squad", "witches/wizards", but not specific fandoms like Madoka Magica, Sailor Moon, Power Rangers, or Harry Potter. It has to be something where no prior knowledge is necessary to read your fic...besides basic human understanding/basic knowledge of Japan/basic non-spoilery knowledge of DCMK. Does that make sense?
Sorry if it doesn't. We have a couple cases we're getting ready for trial, so I've been really out of it the past few weeks. ^.^; I could be talking absolute nonsense and not know it.

Since I had just finished watching Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, I thought it might be fun to do Kaito-kun and the Three Witches. No Yamada characters would actually be in it and the story would still take place in Ekoda High Show, but to anyone that knew, I would be shamelessly ripping off the premise of witches with kiss-activated powers. If no one knew, then they could still read the story straight. Even cutting it down to three witches though (Aoko, Akako, and a surprise) I decided that's too many characters to do right in 5000 words or less, so I tossed that idea out. But I think that would qualify as a borderline "okay to do" case. If not, maybe it can help others figure out where the border is. Fortunately a different plot bunny has hatched (hatched? ) so I have another idea that looks like it'll fall under the role swap AU. Gonna to see if I can draft it this weekend so I move on to the next thing.

Yeah...instead of ripping things off, I think we really prefer that you use your own ingenuity to create an alternate universe. Especially for a contest. Here for this theme I feel like we need to be especially careful of "plagiarism" since it is a contest. If you were to write a fic like that for fun, that's fine, but here for the AU contest, please refrain from doing crossovers or using elements from a specific other show.
Okay. Here's my ruling: the AU into which you put the characters has to be of your own invention. Please do not use universes or elements from other fictional works as that will be considered cheating for this specific theme. Drawing from general tropes as well as historical events is permissible.
I think that's fair for this theme. Since it's a contest, the universe should be of your own creation. It wouldn't be fair if you stole someone else's universe and presented it as your own. Please use your own creativity to invent an alternate universe to use for this contest.
