So I was scrolling through Skyechan's dcrewatch tumblr page and I came across this discussion about who between Kaito and Shinichi is more psychologically affected by their life events (LOLwhat? life events? Okay, I gotta edit this thing later... xD) anyways, here's the LINK to it :3 And here's my personal thought on it (special mention, Mikauzoran) :3 I just... thought it's an interesting topic... and that we should each add our own thoughts on it... I guess? :3

Ohh, this! I was planning on reblogging that and giving my opinion as well. I agree with you, quincy.

I think we all know my answer. I agree with you, Quincy. It's definitely Kaito.

Definitely agreeing that it's Kaito. I mean, all things considered, Kaito was more traumatized even as a child, considering his father's death and the effects thereof, which would lead to more prominent psychological damage since his brain wasn't as fully developed, he was more easily impressionable, etc...
...aaaand I'm rambling, haha, but yes yes. Kaito. Yes.

. . . Man, it's hard to believe how much both have gone through once you lay out everything that's happened to them . . . I want to hug both of them . . . But yeah, with Kaito always hiding his feelings behind his poker face and barely having anyone to support him in his endeavors, he's probably the worst off.

I dunno that Kaito has no one to support him. I think he probably depends pretty heavily on Jii-chan, now that he has him. Though I'd argue that they're both not doing well in regards to any parental support, at least Kaito knows he mattered to his father. Shinichi's parents kind of took off purely because "Lol, you can take care of yourself now, bye!" So I can see him having some abandonment issues there. Agasa seems to be the closest thing he's had to an active parental figure for a good bit of his life.

I didn't say Kaito had no one to support him. I said he had barely anyone to support him. As in, only Jii-chan.

Right. But I'd still argue the point. I dunno how canon we're considering the current MK1412 anime, but in that he's over with the Nakamori family every night. And yeah, they're not in the loop so to speak, and lying to them might be another cause of psychological stress, but they're still present. Not having to worry about food and knowing someone will wonder where you are and notice if something happens to you is a huge part of any support system. He has people who love him, even if they don't actually know the whole truth. So in all legal endeavors, he has their full support. And I know we don't care about this aspect as much, but Kaito still has tests and homework and all the normal high-school concerns, and I can't help but think that the Nakamori family must be an enormous help to him in just dealing with the stress of all that.
Then again, that's all just my opinion. Sorry!

You're fine. It's a hard decision anyway. I'm not sure either would like us measuring their traumatic experiences either . . .

I posted about this on tumblr already, but I think I'll repeat it here: Kaito seems *infinitely* less scared of his creepy shadowy organization than Conan does, even though the MK organization knows a lot more about Kaitou Kid than the men in black know about Conan and APTX.
Though, part of that might be because MK is a lot more lighthearted in general, and its erratic publishing schedule means that Aoyama can't really maintain a long-term threat. Notice how Snake gets treated as more and more of a joke in the post-Blue Birthday chapters.

honestly I can't choose between who's more traumatized by their plotlines because - I dunno, it's like comparing an apple to an orange.
On one hand, Kaito watched his dad die and he has to wear such a heavy costume and be the one person that his best friend / possible love interest hates the absolute most, and he seems like one that would be very skilled at hiding his problems and so keeps them bottled up all the time. Of course, there's also the absurd things he runs into - robo-kaito and everything and then there's nightmare and corbeau (sp?) too - and he spends time running away from the police force (who are far from incompetent, I imagine, it's just Kaito is clever enough to outwit them) and probably dodging freaking bullets from snipers that the police probably barely even acknowledge.
on the other hand, Shinichi had a chance to flourish and rise to the top of his game, ego inflation and all, only to be brutally torn down by a murder attempt that ripped his life to shreds. The taller they are, the harder they fall, yes? And while Ran doesn't hate Conan, she visibly agonizes over the loss of Shinichi. Aside from that, he has a hero complex and even though he obviously cherishes life and detests murders, he just keeps tripping over bodies and is forced to quickly turn to a mindset of solving the case instead of grieving the loss. And can you imagine how much he feels like he stands out, being hyper intelligent and continuously coming across cases as he grows? he grew into the spotlight because there wasn't really anything else he could do. Aside for that, it seems to me that Agasa (consciously or not) manipulated Shinichi into equating "spilled secret" with "Ran dies", and so far any time he doubts that mindset, something kicks him back to it.
I think the most painful for both is the whole false life thing, where they're deceiving their closest childhood friends / (possible) love interests, and even this is sort of a different situation for them both. Aoko hates Kaitou Kid, while Ran pines after Shinichi, and the said people stand beside them and watch. I don't think this is a thing that can be compared and measured.
....at this point I think I've strayed from my main points or missed them altogether, but main point is that I can't choose XD there are justifications for both, really, and like I said; not something that can be easily measured / compared, nor perhaps something that should.

True, true! That whole "I-must-lie-to-protect-even-though-I-know-she'll-hate-me-for-it" thing is a HUGE factor for these two... Throwing in another point for Shinichi over the fact that lately, the boy's nerves sends him to paranoia whenever any of the org members are involved, the way Haibara acts when she feels their presence. I should like to point out, though, that it was Shinichi's choice to stay (reference to Edogawa Conan Kidnapping Case ep) and Yuusaku correctly deduced the reason for it. Hmm, I still feel like I'm a bit biased for Kaito, but that's not to say I don't feel for Shin-chan... I think Kai-chan needs his own version of Hattori Heiji, and freaking Yuusaku Kudou should just lie low with his trolling tendencies on poor little Shin-chan.

This is a very interesting question
Kaito's life background definitely has a greater impact on him, Kaito's condition was way too unique and unusual for us real human beings to fully emphasize with.
On the other hand while Shinichi had a more 'normal' life background, his parents who were living abroad were just about as absent as Kaito's parents. Being shrunk to a six-year old is an experience just as unfathomable as Kaito's condition, however Shinichi on top of his condition had to witness murders happening wherever he goes. If Shinchi was a real person I would say he would be more psychologically affected.
In the end however it is a pointless debate, albeit a fun one. Kaito and Shinichi are not real people, they are immortal teenagers designed for the sole purpose of keeping people like us who live realistic lives entertained.

It's an interesting point to consider, though. Personally, I should like to know what the rest of the fandom thinks because it might help with my writing. Because, although it is true that they are fictional characters, I write not only because it's a hobby because I should like to... explore(?) their personalities... It's somewhat like a mental exercise, trying to find out what course of action each character would take in any/a certain situation, how they would react and all that in the most human way possible... and then interpret them. That's just what I think, though, I dunno...
