I really get what everybody's saying about ShinRan, but I still love it. Maybe it's just because I can be a hopeless romantic, but I love that they have this dedication to each other and while I know that the situation will never be 100% perfect in canon, I trust that fanon will handle the nitty gritty.
Now if we really, really want to get into a pairing I disagree with, it's deffo ConAi or Shinichi and Shiho. I just think both depend on putting the other in a situation they won't really be comfortable with, be it Conan never becoming Shinichi again, or Ai having to return to being Shiho.

Oh my gosh, I totally forgot about ConAi... Yeah, I agree. It's more of a dependence-on-each-other thing, which is not bad, but romance-wise... nah... Edit: In my head, I see her deciding not to go back to being Shiho and stay with Shounen Tanteidan... eventually ending up with Mitsuhiko.

I've always thought for Ran or Aoko to forgive the deception (quickly), they'd have to be introduced to the danger--the reason for keeping the secret--before they realized the secret itself, even if it's only shortly before. Like, if Kaito tells Aoko in a quiet, deliberate way, that's the most honest on his part, but he's still going to get himself slapped into the next ward. But if he tells her or she figures it out while running for their lives from Snake, she's not going to have time to get honestly angry until after she has a chance to see for herself what Kaito's been dealing with. Same story with Ran, though I doubt she'd hit Conan no matter how angry she got. This whole scenario might just be wishful thinking on my part, though.
As for Conan/Ai, she does have the advantage of being the only girl he isn't lying to--most of the time, at least. But I can't say I particularly like them together. Ai can't seem to believe that anyone honestly likes her, and Conan isn't really demonstrative enough to change her mind, I think. If there never is an antidote, I can see it happening just because they've been in the same boat for so long and nobody else understands. But I don't think it'd ever be properly romantic.

I of course agree that I want both girls find out at least sometime before the very end of their stories. I want to see something come up where they half find out on their own half have the boys reveal things of their own volition. I want to see their suspicious being raised actually mean something. I know their not on par with the genius but they have been shown to be smart in some regards. I can picture them eventually finding out but things still aren't resolved yet and they can actually provide support and be involved. I definitely don't want things to work out so easily. I want to see them angry and disappointed. God, I want Ran to slap Shinichi silly (if it was more of a comedy how it used to be, maybe even a good roundhouse kick too). Not as Conan though, that seems pretty wrong... But I still want to see Shinichi man up and do what's right and if he gives up so easily then I will be pretty pissed myself, hehe.

ichthyophobia, I totally agree with the idea that if the boys are going to survive the revelation, there'd better be a huge amount of danger so the girls can experience and at least sort of understand. also, Conan's just - no matter what age he acts, he looks like a child. Nobody but our regular criminals would likely hit him, and definitely not Ran. a full-sized Shinichi, on the other hand... XD
i've actually used the whole "we're running away from someone who's trying to kill us so get mad at me later" scenario before (in a different fandom, though), and I think it works out better than other more awkward revelations, partially because there's action pushing it along and forcing the characters to set that aside for a mo, and maybe get a grasp of why or a chance to think before punching the other person's lights out

If you think about it, though, wouldn't Ran (and maybe even Kazuha) be upset with Heiji too? Since he knows what's going on and has been keeping it a secret as well? At least Ran probably would.

Oh, Ran would be upset at more than just Heiji. Let's see . . . Heiji, Agasa-hakase, Yukiko, Yuusaku . . .

Sure but I don't necessarily think we'd see the anger to the same extent. Like I don't see her slapping Heiji but it depends on when and where she sees him after she does find out to. Similar with Kazuha. But she might just channel however Ran is feeling about the situation. Hah, Ran would be the one to tell Kazuha not to be angry with Heiji, right?

True. She'd be the one to calm Kazuha down - maybe, if they're friends at that point, maybe Aoko too if she's still mad?

Still Kazuha might be mad at Heiji for putting himself into and, knowing his luck, probably almost getting himself killed.

If it's fanfic? Hah, anyone would have a hard time calming Aoko. I don't think about their plots becoming intertwined so I couldn't say for sure.

Wow... I never realized I was so alone in my preference of pairings... My personal opinion is that story-wise, ShinRan and KaiAo are happening, and I really don't have a problem with that. Clearly the characters know who they want to be in a relationship with, and the secrets they keep are meant to protect the ones uninvolved. If they can have a happy ending, I really can't say I would feel disappointed at all. However, everyone makes a really good point about the boys' secrets being really big blocks to a healthy relationship with their childhood friends, and neither will be happy when they uncover those secrets. Aoko probably knows what it's like to be kept at distance from the one she loves because of her dad, but to get that from Kaito, the childhood friend who's always been there when her dad wasn't, is likely to do a little more damage. And Ran, this would be the first time that she's had her heart ripped out with worry (most likely), but I think the fact that Shinichi's been not only lying to her for all this time, but also living under the same roof as her would really be what gets her. I think Gosho does this to show that true love has to overcome problems to be proven (like, really, REALLY big problems), and when the guys come clean, it'll be a time that really tests how much the characters care about each other. To us, the readers, these issues might seem insurmountable, because in reality, they probably would be. But then, if we try thinking outside of fictional logic, it kind of makes us wonder how these love stories would actually end... Realisticness in a Gosho story has a bit of a range. (I feel like I just butchered the English language with that paragraph...)
But here's the odd thing about me that makes my opinion different from everyone else: I like the idea of ConanAi/ShinShi, BUT I also find myself shipping KaiShin. In terms of similarity, Shinichi and Shiho are the best match. They're both hiding in children's bodies, both have high intellect (even for people their real age), they both share the burden of Organization, and they both have similar morals. She's the one who's been there for him the most with Hattori in Osaka and Ran not being allowed to know anything. Even when he keeps secrets from her, she's able to be more understanding about WHY he kept quiet, and I think that's an important thing for whoever Shinichi ends up with to have.
And then there's my complication... In short, I've have never read a ShinShi/ConAi fanfic. It's a pairing that I particularly like, but I have no idea what it looks like to the fandom. However, basically anyone who's ever written a KaiShin fanfic has probably seen my username at some point. I was relatively new to the DC fanbase hen I first read a KaiShin fic, then BAM. I couldn't read anything else. The fanfiction portrayal of both of pretty much everyone is slightly different from the canon, but it was really interesting how different yet similar Kaito and Shinichi were. Somehow, authors were able to use that to make it so the guys not only understood each other, but also complimented each other. A lot of those fics explore their parallels and talk about their lives if their girls really did end realizing that the relationship was just not going to work. One of the main reasons why I like this pairing so much is most likely because it surprises me how well a relationship between these two could work. (And then there's the fact that I'm female and people with two X chromosomes seem to just like that kind of stuff for whatever reason...)
...And that was my long rant that probably belongs in a different section of this thread! Wow, I can ramble...

Wow, I'd love to read a ConAi fic... I've read a rated M KaiShin doujinshi before and I've got to say if it wasn't for the fact that they look like each other I'd definitely ship them hard on. XD As for ShinRan and KaiAo... hmm, A test of character... doesn't sound like a bad thing at all. If Aoyama-sensei pulls it out real good then I'd say there's no need for me to kill people >

Random question, guys (bear with me, I'm just really curious)... What do you think of Gin and Vermouth? I mean, I remember some time long looooong ago that Aoyama-sensei made some uh... sexual connotations when Vermouth suggested she and Gin make some martini (I haven't read the chapter myself; another reason why I'm asking this... also, borrowed this from wiki: "The Martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth,...") ... ... ... ... But, uh, don't they hate each other...?

Gin, at least, is emotionally disconnected enough that I think there could be a sexual relationship without there being an emotional one. Vermouth I'm not so sure; I don't understand her very well. But I think she'd do it if she wanted to, regardless of romance. Which is to say, I cannot see either of them in a lasting relationship. But a series of one-night stands? Absolutely.
