Prompt: Learning from Mistakes
So, this did not turn out quite like I wanted. I think I might eventually add some other episodes to this story just so that it's less... awkward? I think both the situation and the pacing are a little off, but I'm not sure how to make it work better. Any suggestions?
I do hope you enjoy reading the parts that did work out, though!
Summary: Shinichi does not expect to be yelled at when he picks up Hattori's call.

The Side Effects of Friendship
It’s late in the evening when Shinichi finally gets back to Tokyo, having helped wrap up the case on the train and escorted by the police for the rest of the ride.
He’s mildly annoyed, not because of the hijacking (Heaven knows he’s used to those), but because now Ran will never let him travel to and from Osaka on his own again.
It just figures that he’ll never be allowed to go anywhere alone as Conan. Ran’s not nearly as careless as his parents.
Needless to say, she is at the station when he arrives, anxiously trying to peer over the crowd of people until she spots Shinichi and forces her way to him, crushing him in a hug.
The number of calls she’s made to him in the last hour have probably cost her more money than the entire trip has cost him.
The whole way home, Ran talks about how she won’t let something like this happen ever again and Shinichi just knows his fate is sealed. When they get home, she sits him down on the couch to have a ‘talk’.
He’s this close to tears when Ran tells him for the 57th time that she’s sorry she let him go on his own at all, when he’s saved by his phone ringing. He excuses himself politely and goes into his room to take the call.
He’s even more relieved when he sees that it’s Hattori. He’ll probably want to know the details of the case, which is a welcome change, he’s been needing an intellectual discussion all evening.
Except that’s not what happens when he picks up.
“I just heard the train reached Tokyo, why did you not call me?” Hattori screams from his end of the line. Shinichi jerks the phone away from his ear, gently rubbing the organ to ease the shock. It’s not out of character, per se, but Shinichi cannot think for the life of him why Hattori would be so upset right now.
“I didn’t think you were that curious about what happened, it wasn’t very interesting,” he responds drily, unsure of what to make of Hattori’s anger.
“Who cares about the case?” Hattori screeches, and Shinichi is forced to hold his phone away from his head again. He’s about to respond with something snarky, but Hattori starts talking first.
“You didn’t call me to tell me you were okay!”
Well, that’s new.
“I thought you’d figure I was.”
“That doesn’t mean I wasn’t worried! You’re like, three feet tall. Anything could have happened to you! You’re supposed to call to tell me you’re okay, goddammit! What am I going think when I don’t hear from my best friend after he’s been in a train hijacking?”
Shinichi doesn’t understand.
“But it wasn’t even a huge deal, it was over almost as soon as it started.”
“Do you know how caring for someone works? Just because I know you’re going to be okay doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear your voice after something dangerous happens. Come on, man, how dense can you be?”
Shinichi thinks about this. The way Hattori puts it now, it makes a lot more sense that he should have called as soon as he got back.
He hears Hattori breathing heavily on the other end of the line, and he thinks about what it would be like to be in his place. If Hattori was small and potentially defenseless… if he’d been travelling alone and the train had been hijacked.
Shinichi would have probably had a heart attack.
“You’re right,” Shinichi finally says, contrite, “I’m just not used to anyone but Ran caring like that,” he admits.
“Well,” Hattori says, tone still angry, but the edge off his voice, “don’t forget next time.”
“I won’t.”
