Kudou Shinichi never expected to be forgiven for suddenly disappearing for four years—least of all by her. But the fact that she was willing only proved to him how little he honestly knew her, and how deep her friendship with his best friend was. Written for Poirot Café’s Writing Prompt #1: Dialogue.

Prompt: “I’m ready to try again, if you are?”
---
“I’m ready to try again, if you are?”
The words had been as unexpected as the sender. Now twenty years of age, Kudou Shinichi blinked, frozen, as the sentence percolated through his brain. She wants to—what? “I—ah, I’m sorry?”
There was a sigh across the line. “I said, I’m ready to try again.”
The sudden lump in his throat made speaking extraordinarily difficult. “I—that is—Sonoko…”
“Well?”
“Sonoko, I—did Ran put you up to this?” he asked. It stung more than he had expected, to know that she thought so little of him as to not want to talk to him at all. “Because if she did, I promise that you don’t actually have to—"
“Ran did not put me up to this, Kudou-kun,” she interrupted without a quiver in her voice.
“—forgive me since I know that I—what?” Shinichi blinked, unsure he had actually heard correctly. “… why?”
Sonoko’s sigh sizzled over the line. “Because while Ran would never pressure me to forgive you, I know it’d mean a lot to her. And after a lot of thinking, while I do want to murder you for hurting Ran as badly as you had, you did it only because you were trying to ensure her safety. So while I don’t think I can forgive you for hurting Ran, I do forgive you for doing what you thought was necessary to protect her.”
“Sonoko…”
“Don’t get me wrong, Kudou-kun.” The dangerous warning in her voice was clear. “One wrong move after this, and all bets are off. There would be nothing Ran could say or do to make me guarantee that your life will be miserable.”
“I understand,” Shinichi answered quietly with a nod to himself. “Thank you, Sonoko.”
Sonoko’s voice eased up just a little, leaking the faintest bit of hope. “Don’t thank me just yet. Prove it to me, Shinichi-kun.”
“I will.”

Author’s Note: Something short to just get me back up and running. I’ve had quite a few real-life upheavals since my last time I posted anything. I hope you enjoyed it.
