Summary: Something's not right with Kobayashi-sensei lately, and it's up to the Detective Boys to find out what it is!
The Seven Mysteries of Teitan Elementary had been solved, and with it, the Detective Boys had gotten to know their new homeroom teacher, Kobayashi Sumiko-sensei, beyond the stern exterior she had shown during her first week. As she became more relaxed about the upcoming Parents's Day, her true, easygoing personality began to shine, and she became well loved by her students. (And, as it turned out, Parents's Day had gone without a hitch.)
So, when Kobayashi-sensei had pushed open the sliding door a bit too forcefully, the students of Class 1-B found themselves gasping in unison, exchanging worried glances. The fear that once possessed them during their initial encounter with their teacher had returned once more.
The Detective Boys, who knew her more than the rest of the class, were the most distressed of all. What happened to Kobayashi-sensei?
"Rise." She chimed in through gritted teeth, interrupting their thoughts. She neither shouted nor raised her voice, but her tone was very much a volcano waiting to explode.
The class immediately stood up, bowed, and said the customary greeting, "Good morning, sensei" in the most polite manner they could possibly think of. Normally, they would've greeted her in a loud and enthusiastic manner, but it was hard to be the latter when terrified. More importantly, however, she was clearly in a bad mood, and any sort of extreme emotion or act by them might just worsen that.
Today—and hopefully, just today—there was no room for mistakes.
The final chime of the school bell was something most students looked forward to, and this was most especially true today for the kids of Class 1-B, even for the rare ones who actually enjoyed school, like Mitsuhiko.
"Phew!" The freckled boy wiped the sweat over his brow. "I'm so glad school's finally over." It was a huge heresy for him to say this, being the son of two teachers himself. Thankfully, however, his parents taught at another school, so there was absolutely no chance of them hearing that statement.
"Yeah, Kobayashi-sensei was really scary today," said Genta.
"Something must be bothering her!" Ayumi came to their teacher's defense. "She's usually so kind and friendly. Do you have any idea what it could be, Conan-kun?
The shrunken detective rubbed his chin. "No clue."
"Maybe she didn't get enough sleep last night," Mitsuhiko said. "That always puts me in a bad mood."
"Or maybe she didn't eat breakfast!" Genta said.
"If that was the case, shouldn't she have eaten a lot during lunch?" Conan asked. "She barely ate anything."
"Maybe she doesn't like curry!" Ayumi said.
"Who doesn't like curry?!" Genta protested, aghast. "Everybody likes curry!"
"Actually, my sister isn't too fond of Japanese curry, either," said Mitsuhiko. "She prefers the much spicier Indian version."
"That's crazy talk! Your sister has terrible taste!" Genta spat out in a raised tone of voice, much to the surprise of everyone, including himself. While he'd always been passionate about food, he'd never gotten so worked up about it before, especially in such a negative way.
Suppressing the urge to retort in less polite speech, Mitsuhiko said, still maintaining his normal polite way of speaking, "Hey, there's no need for you to insult my sister! Besides, I like both, as well as Thai and Malay."
His restraint seemed to have worked, for Genta's response was a much calmer "That's insane! They taste as different as night and day."
"Well, different curries from different countries each have their own charms," Mitsuhiko said, ready to begin a discourse on the various curries all over the world.
"Hey, guys, it's great you've stopped fighting, but, in case you've forgotten," Conan interrupted, "we're supposed to be figuring out what happened to Kobayashi-sensei, remember?"
"Right!" said the two boys in unison.
"Hey, I know!" A wide grin, streching from ear to ear, appeared on Ayumi's face. "Why don't we drop by the professor's place and ask Haibara-san? She always says the most interesting things."
"Wouldn't we be disturbing her?" asked Mitsuhiko. "She's sick, after all."
"Man, she's really lucky! She didn't have to deal with Kobayashi-sensei today!" Genta said.
"Wait!" Ayumi beamed, her eyes sparkling. "Maybe Kobayashi-sensei was in a bad mood today because she was sick! I know I get a bit grumpy when I'm sick."
"That's certainly a possibility," Conan said. "She was quite sluggish today, not to mention she was sitting at her desk most of the time. She hardly ever does that, even back when she first became our homeroom teacher."
"But, if she was sick, couldn't she just have taken the day off?" Genta asked. "I want to get sick so I can take the day off from school, too!"
"My parents still go to work even when sick," Mitsuhiko said.
"Man, teachers are really weird," Genta said. "Going to school even when sick, then lashing out on their students."
"Indeed," Mitsuhiko said. "Let's just hope Kobayashi-sensei feels better tomorrow."
"And Haibara-san, too!" Ayumi added.
I've written a lot more, but it's painfully in draft mode, so I'll just stop here. It's not quite what the prompt asks, but I hope my prompter enjoys it, regardless. And please, pardon any inconsistencies, as I originally wanted to set this before Ai's introduction, but the fic demanded that she be there. I'll make sure to fix them once the final draft's complete.
