This thread will feature all my one-shots written for the daily word challenge. Expect them to be 1 day out of sync at times, due to timezones. This is less a daily-challenge and more good practice for me
“Chris, this is most impressive, where did you get this?”, asked Yoko Okino, referring to the collection of chocolates laid out on her table. And impressive it was, a huge collection of ornately shaped treats, almost all perfect replicas of bottles of alcohol. Several bottles of wine, some whiskeys, amongst other such shapes. A few bottles had been broke, such as the bottle of Sherry, but considering the distance they'd travelled that was to be expected.
“There was a lovely chocolatier in California that made these.”, replied Chris Vinyard, a faint smile tracing her lips.
“Was?”
“Yes, was. He passed away just a few hours after I collected these, a heart attack of all things.”
“Well, that's a shame. I'm surprised the press didn't catch wind of it, I suspect that they're the most stubborn lot in history, as I can testify.” Yoko responded. She had had a nightmare with the press after the suicide of Fujie-san, and had ended up purchasing a new apartment to go to when she needed a break from them.
Chris nodded. “The gossip column writers have to get paid somehow. Anyway, the chocolates are demanding to be tasted. Which first?”
Yoko scanned over the collection once more. “It's such a shame though, some of the chocolates have ended up destroyed. Anyway, I think I'll try the Bourbon”, she stated, before picking up the corresponding bottle, and taking a bite.
“Well, now that you've taken the Bourbon, I suspect I should take the Gin then.”
“Mmm, ooh, that has a kick to it. How much alcohol did he put into these?”
“Probably more than is healthy if you have the entire tray in one sitting. Anyway, I shall leave it at one, I wouldn't like to drive whilst I'm drunk.”
Yoko failed to suppress a giggle at that comment. “Not like you... or did you manage to crash your bike last time?”
“Nothing of the sort. Anyway, I should be off.” Chris replied, perhaps a little too quickly, and with a slight look of indignation on her face, “You should probably clean up the chocolates before your guests begin to arrive. I'm not sure who would be worse seeing you surrounded by alcoholic chocolates, idiot detectives or the press”.
“Ah, I miss not being famous. Birthdays used to be so simple, just me and a few friends. Now my birthday includes dozens of reporters, many other celebrities I don't know that well, and that perverted detective. I don't know how you got used to it, Chris.”
“I find that many years of practice helps.” responded Chris, walking towards the door. “Lord knows I've had plenty of it.”
“I will take your word on it. Incidentally, since it's coming up fairly soon, will you be at the joint fund-raiser the Hakuba and Suzuki families are holding?”
Chris nodded, “I suspect so, it's quite a surprise that the two families are actually working together on something, so I suspect a large number of people will be there.” As she opened the door, Chris took a final chance to add a comment.
“Anyway, now I believe you should focus on the matter at hand. Do remember to have a happy birthday... Marsala.”
Since it's writing practice, I appreciate ratings & reviews.
