A/N: So yeah. I got majorly busy with work and only got to start working on this on the 24th (um... yay?). I said I was gonna finish my Secret Santa Gift on or before the deadliest deadline, December 31, 2016, 11:59:59pm, by Poirot Cafe clock, yeah?
But then, like I've said in the chatbox... LO AND BEHOLD, I got sick on the last day of the year. I'm super sorry, Jinx! T^T I don't think I can make it before 11:59:59pm.
But hey, that's not to say you won't have a gift. I've already drafted the first part for your reading pleasure. I'll be sure to add the remaining other half once I feel a bit better on or before 11:59:59pm of January 1 (cos, yeah, after Jan1, I'd be majorly busy with work again, with or without this annoying... flu (or... I think this is flu, but I'm not exactly sure).
The prompt was Platonic Shinichi/Conan and Heiji, but then I decided just writing about them won't do the "platonic" part any justice (plus I'm terrible with bromance, canon or not), so I decided to add Kazuha-chan.
Jinx-chan, I hope this isn't illegal, and again I'm really really sorry for getting sick and whatnot. Currently shivering like I'm having a non-epileptic epileptic episode.
So, yeah... Working title is "Unplanned." I'm gonna post part 1 and work on the other part as soon as I get a proper sleep.
(*paranoid Quincy mode* Oh my god, please don't get mad at mepleasedontgetmadatmeplease...)
Unplanned (part 1)
SUMMARY: Quick-witted Kazuha knew something's definitely up when her childhood friend starts turning her down for some bonding time with Conan. She wishes her suspicions will remain just that... just baseless suspicions.
December 22, Osaka
More than once, Kazuha had noticed Heiji's and Conan-kun's unusual closeness...
At first she thought nothing of it. She was actually quite happy, to be honest. Her childhood friend is a guy, after all. It's quite refreshing to see him bonding with another guy, despite their ten-year age gap. If anything, it makes him look like a normal teenage boy, acting all silly, having misadventures other boys their age always have, getting into all sorts of trouble, and jesting each other, forming a bond that'd definitely last a lifetime.
But when Heiji started ditching her, forgetting their scheduled get-togethers and trips they've been planning for months, and then later on finding out it was because of Conan-kun, the police officer's daughter couldn't help but feel like something's up.
She forgave him that one time she stood waiting for hours for him not knowing he went to Beika to help with a case, or when Heiji "forgot" he had to meet with her when he was rushing to help Kudo with something because "Conan-kun said Shinichi-niichan needs his help." To Kazuha, those are just minor, harmless things, although admittedly annoying.
It's just... sometimes she couldn't help but feel insecure with Heiji's friendship with the kid. They share the same interests, do the same things, heck, they can even be too terribly close with each other in proximity and not feel awkward with it. Perhaps what gave it away was, in more than one circumstance, the two finish each other’s sentences like they’re two peas in a pod!
She had to admit, she grows a little jealous of their bond sometimes... She's Heiji's older sister! And... well, Conan-kun can very well pass as Heiji's little brother, so... sometimes she can't help but feel like she's being robbed off of her childhood friend.
Kazuha admits the two have been really close to the point that it feels like they're hiding secrets. Of what nature those secrets are, she can only guess. Sometimes, though, she couldn't help but get suspicious. After all, what person in their right mind would constantly call his best friend by another name, talk about grown-up stuff with a child, no matter how abnormally smart he is, and whisper things with seemingly romantic inclinations?
She wishes her suspicions remain just that… just suspicions. Cos if it turns out that secret is about a... "budding romantic relationship," Kazuha's gonna flip!
The ponytailed girl would give herself a good whacking on the head later for getting jealous over a six-year-old grade school boy. Right now she's got to think of a plan to get Heiji alone on Christmas Eve. If she wants to confess her feelings for him, she has to do it right away!
Who cares if they celebrate it in Beika? All Kazuha cares about is him knowing where he stands with her…
To say Heiji was anxious that night was an understatement. Two days even before this very night, he and Kudo have been talking about—heck, even rehearsing—how he’s going to set everything up so they’d be alone in some romantic restaurant somewhere (a revolving restaurant seems like a pretty fun place, according to Kudo) and finally, finally, tell her how he feels for his childhood friend.
Only… was he being abrupt? Was he going to be tongue-tied once there? Won’t he look even a bit awkward or stumble on his feet or something?
The rendezvous place was the Mouris, and there, Old Man Mouri, the neechan, and Kudo greeted them as they arrived. The disappointment in Kazuha’s eyes were evident when she found out there was not enough food for them (under the guise that Ran forgot they’re coming and prepared too little food for them to enjoy). As compensation, Ku—Conan-kun presented them a coupon for a romantic dinner for two up at Beika Tower’s revolving restaurant. This, Heiji “graciously accepted,” *wink, wink* and they went their merry way to their destination…
Well, they were supposed to be, until a murder case stopped them in their tracks… and once again, Heiji’s plans for a romantic date and Kazuha’s supposed Christmas Eve confession went down the drain for about the nth time.
Maybe… Maybe fate has some other plans.
Maybe come New Year’s Eve, during the fireworks… they’d finally get their chance to pop the question.
A few days before New Year’s Eve, Osaka
Kazuha was merely curious about her childhood friend’s whereabouts that day when she decided to barge into the Hattori residence unannounced—like she always does—and sneaked her way into Heiji’s room. They haven't seen each other since that Christmas Eve, but Kazuha practically dragged her feet there to see if he's "still alive," so to speak.
Well, no, not really. In reality she was there to ask about the pretty hand-knitted red scarf Heiji gave Conan-kun as a present (which by the way left said pipsqueak all red in the face)… Not that it meant anything to her; she was merely curious.
However, just as she was about to slide the door open (without even knocking on it), Heiji’s joyful voice stopped her.
“You’ll really do that for me, Kudo?” said he.
Kazuha's mouth went dry.
K-Kudo?
“Oh my god, you’re the coolest, most reliable best friend a guy can ask for! I love you, Kudo! And if this all goes well, I’m gonna love you forever!”
From behind the door, Kazuha bit her lip. It felt as if she just spied on a conversation she was not supposed to hear.
So it wasn’t Conan-kun Heiji was crushing on… it was Kudo! Because, wasn’t that a confession just now? Didn’t Heiji just said he “loves Kudo?” Darn, it was even worse than she thought!
Just as she was about to turn to leave, the opening of the door made her freeze.
There stood Hattori Heiji, all exultant and blissful at first, with his cellphone in hand, in his jacket, jeans and baseball hat, as if he was just about to go out somewhere. But upon coming face to face with the girl, he paled and cold sweat started trickling down his forehead.
TBC.
A/N: Evil cliffhanger. I'm sorry. I'm really really sorry Jinx! I won't blame you if you get mad at me but just... argh, even after that wonderful gift you gave me. Gawd I'm so upset with myself! *cryes*
Just... forgive me? Please?
I'll post part 2 once I've finished. I promise. Love ya, Loves!
Right now, I need sleep. I need to get better quick so I can finish your gift...
Here's hoping you enjoyed, though... *hides behind a rock*
