A little late for Christmas, but hope you enjoy it anyway!
Prompt: The Night Before Christmas, but with Kaitou Kid instead of Santa.
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there
“Keep sharp! It's ten minutes to midnight, Kid is probably already here waiting! We won't let him get away this time!”
“Yes, sir!”
The room was completely silent, the tension so thick you could probably only cut it with a chainsaw. The Task Force was carefully spread out around the room, four members including the Inspector himself surrounding the pedestal containing the jewel on target, scanning the area ceaselessly.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap
“Oi, you there! Kids shouldn't be out so late! Go home!”
Conan's forehead creased at the Inspector's shout, unmistakably directed at him. Even if he looked like this, he was actually seventeen... His mouth opened wide in a yawn, and he blinked the bleariness away. Dammit.
“It's fine, keibu, he's with me.”
Conan turned back to see Hakuba Saguru strolling up to them with his hands in his pockets. He gave the other teen detective a nod in thanks, which the blond returned. As Hakuba came to a stop beside him, Conan took a glance at his watch.
The room erupted in green smoke.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash
The ventilators whirred to life automatically, dispersing the smoke amid muffled shouts from the Task Force and the Inspector's vivid cursing.
The blinding fog finally cleared to reveal Kid, standing proudly on to of the empty glass case, brilliant diamond in hand.
“KIDDD!!!”
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,
Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,
When what to my wondering eyes did appear,
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,
With a little old driver so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick
“What... are you wearing?” Hakuba intoned deadpan.
Kid had switched his customary white and blue outfit for one of red and white, the red of the suit jacket and pants being of a particularly glaring shade, especially under the harsh indoor lighting of the museum. But the most striking change was the top hat had crowned his head, a red one embellished with a forest green ribbon and topped with a wreath of holly around its brim and small reindeer antlers protruding from the top. Every now and then, Hakuba's gaze couldn't help but stray to the frankly quite...stunning sight. Stunning of the baffled speechless category.
Kid grinned, completely unfazed by the detective's your-fashion-sense-is-atrocious stare. “All in the Christmas spirit, right?”
Hakuba facepalmed. “Whatever you say.”
Nakamori-keibu finally recovered a good half minute slower than he normally would. “GET HIM!!!”
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
“Aww, we're not opening presents first? And I got all of you some too...”
With a puff of smoke every person in the room now featured reindeer antlers protruding from their heads.
“See? Now we match!”
Sighing, Conan reached up a hand to tug them off... only to find that they seemed to have been stuck on very firmly.
A realization that several others had also come to.
“KIDDDD!!!”
As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof
“How nice of you to join me, Tantei-san, Tantei-kun.” Kid's figure was a silhouette against the full moon.
Both Hakuba and Conan were panting from the exertion of sprinting up to the sixth floor museum roof, glaring balefully at the thief for being so utterly relaxed.
“Well then, as much as I would love to stay around and have a chat, I'm afraid I do have somewhere to be, so I'll have to bid my leave here, my dear detectives. Till next time!” Cocky grin the only thing visible under the brim of his top hat, Kid leaned backwards and tipped off the side of the building.
By the time they reached the railing to look down, the brightly-clad figure was nowhere to be seen.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack
“Kid-sama!?” Sonoko half-shrieked at the figure that dropped in lightly from the air vent, but stopped short when Kid pressed a finger to his lips.
Grinning wickedly, she mirrored the action. “Shh, right?” And couldn't help but blush and squeal inwardly when Kid took her other hand to press a chivalrous kiss onto its back. What a gentleman!
The light glinted off the glass of the magician's monocle and pearly white teeth.
“Give my regards to your uncle for me, will you, Suzuki-san,” he whispered a split second before he vanished into thin air.
Wrapped lightly around her wrist was the same necklace the thief had stolen just a little while ago, the gem dangling from it bright and clear.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow
Kaito stowed his gear back into the backpack he had brought, and headed back home with a spring in his step. The heist had gone without a hitch, and he had gotten to pull off a number of Christmas-themed pranks that he had been saving up. A great piece of work, if he could say so himself! And it was always nice to hear his fans' cheering.
But as he left the bustle of the heist location, leaving the chatter and spotlights behind, his steps slowed. Until they finally stopped, his gaze falling on a window of a nearby house.
Where the moonlight faintly illuminated three little clay figures, the smallest one squeezed cozily between the other two, the family of clay snowmen staring out at him with happy watercolor smiles.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath
Kaito slowly let out a breath, watching it condense into mist in the white moonlight. He was lying along a branch in the tree that sat between his house and the Nakamori's, gloved hands tucked into coat pockets.
He had watched Nakamori-keibu return home a short while ago, and was probably now in the shower. The light in Aoko's room, the one he was closest to, had been off ever since he had gotten there. She must have gone to sleep early. Sighing, he stared up at the large full moon, shining down and casting a white shade over everything.
It was late and he really should have gone to bed, but... he didn't feel like going home to an empty house. It had been part of the reason why he had wanted to have a heist on this day, not wanting to be alone, but it seemed like he felt even worse now. The last time they had celebrated Christmas, it had been before...
“BaKaito!” The yell almost made him fall out of the tree. He spun his head around, to find Aoko frowning at him from her window. “What are you doing hanging around outside in the cold at this time of the night!?”
He blinked at her.
“For goodness sake, Kaito...”
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself
Aoko disappeared from the window for a moment, and the next moment his vision was full of wool.
“Huh?”
“Aoko... made that earlier. Aoko was going to give it to you tomorrow, but a certain idiot is just hanging around outside freezing.”
After staring at it for a moment, Kaito wrapped the scarf around his neck. It was warm. “...Thank you, Aoko.”
“Come over tomorrow, Kaito. Aoko's dad is going to be home, and Aoko's going to cook a nice lunch.”
“But...”
“Aoko won't take no for an answer! Oh, and-”
Kaito blinked as Aoko vanished into her room again. The next thing thrown at him was a large teddy bear, with faded fur and worn out seams. Kaito traced his fingers over the well-worn soft toy, the fur of its round tummy warm and fuzzy against his palm.
“Aoko's mum was the one who gave Kuma-chan to Aoko.” At that, Kaito's eyes snapped towards her. Aoko's gaze was firm. “I'm lending Kuma-chan to you, BaKaito, so you better return him when you come tomorrow! Now go home before you catch a cold!”
“Aoko...” Kaito buried his face in the teddy bear's soft down. “Thanks, Aoko.”
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle
The door swung open. “You're late, BaKaito!”
“Oh, is that Kaito-kun? Come in, come in.”
Nakamori-keibu's gruff voice was heard before he came round the corner, and Kaito felt tears prick his eyes as the older man swept him into a warm hug.
“Thank you for having me, keibu,”
The inspector pulled away and reached out a hand to ruffle his messy hair fondly. “There's no need to be so formal, boy. We think of you as family, you know that.”
“Uh-huh! Come on, Kaito, we were just going to eat the cake Aoko made earlier!” Kaito let his childhood friend tug him into the cozy kitchen.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
“Right. And you're here, why?”
Kaitou Kid pouted, pouted at him. “I'm distributing presents!”
Hakuba massaged his temples. “You're not Father Christmas.”
“So what? I can give presents too!” the insane thief proclaimed belligerently. “I can be Kaitou Khristmas.”
Given that he was still wearing at atrocious top hat from before, he certainly wasn't failing to look the part.
“Anyway, don't barge into people's houses in the middle of the night. I was just about to go to bed.” Hakuba crossed his arms, feeling rather self-conscious in his blue pajama set printed with little reindeer (Baaya had gotten it for him, it would have been rude not to wear it! It wasn't that he actually really liked it or anything).
“Aww, is little Saguru-chan going to bed early like a good little boy?” A slow, slightly manic grin spread across Kid's face. “Why, Saguru-chan,” his voice was perfectly sugary, and downright gleeful. “Do you believe in Santa Claus?”
Hakuba spluttered.
Kid's smirk was moving into outright devilish. “I've found out Tantei-san's secret!”
“Wha- AS IF!”
“Sure, sure, whatever you say, Saguru-chan.” The thief's diabetic-inducing patronizing tone made Hakuba's brows draw together sharply. A glare which would have been much more effective if not for reindeer-decorated pajamas.
Kid continued to smile in an infuriatingly indulgent manner.
“Argh, just go away!”
The magician pouted. “Fine. Tantei-san's a meanie. Santa won't give presents to bad children, you know.” Before the blond could formulate a stinging enough retort, the phantom thief leaped out of the window. The third floor window.
“Ho ho ho!”
And promptly vanished.
Hakuba stared into the empty night for a long moment, before recovering his senses and slamming the window shut with more force than strictly necessary. Drawing the curtains, he turned away from the window and froze.
His (formerly) immaculate study was covered in not insignificant layer of fake snow. And by that he meant about three inches of it, all over his (multiple copies of) Sherlock Holmes novels.
“KUROBA!”
Omake Take 2
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter
“Nice cap, Tantei-kun.”
Flushing, Conan snatched the red and white polka-dotted nightcap Ran had bought him, decorated at the tip with a sprig of felt holly, off his head. The item clutched in his hand, he turned back to properly level a glare at the intruding phantom thief.
Who wasn't there anymore.
Sighing, he turned to trudge back up the stairs. Utterly unaware, until the next morning, that his hair had been quite masterfully colored red and green.
