Prompt: Ayumi comes to the realization she likes girls too (preferably she's at least 11 (AyuAi is optional but encouraged :3)
Ayumi clutched the roofs metal railing hard. She had to run and run and run. Her heart beat fast, whether, from the physical activity or the sudden epiphany itself, Ayumi had no idea. All she knew was that this panicking sensation that tickled her at her toes and made her stomach do flip-flops was not good. The last time she felt- flustered, she supposed, was because of someone who left her life at the age of eight. Someone still precious to her despite being taken away to America.
Edogawa Conan, Shonen-Tantei dan leader for all of her school career she had with him was her first love. Now she was eleven, nearly twelve and experiencing that same falling sensation she had with her bespectacled friend. She just hadn't expected it to be on a girl.
Not like that was bad; not at all! In fact, Ayumi though it was cute when she saw couples of the same gender out on the streets of Beika, hand-in-hand. It always made her smile. She supposed, the most shock would be falling completely-and-utterly-in-love with her genius best friend at the age of flippin' eleven was the shock. It hit hard. Especially once she considered the fact that perhaps, Haibara was totally straight.
Or, to make her chances worst, not interested in romance at all.
Ayumi had the worst luck, she decided dryly. She couldn't ask Genta or Mitsuhiko to help her either since she knew for sure that her tall freckled friend was also helplessly in love with the same person. Genta would probably just tell her that eels or something could solve her problems. Ayumi scoffed lightly at that prospect. Boys.
She needed a girls opinion. Someone smart and strong and not likely to tell her crush that she was indeed her crush. That left the member of the still active Shonen-Tantei dan with two people to turn to. Mouri Ran, and Masumi Sera.
.............................
"Ran-san!" Small-ish hands beat the door to the Mouri Detective's Agency in an attempt to be heard. "Can I talk to you? Hello? Ra-" The door opened sending the small girl straight to the ground, only to be picked up by strong hands which steadied her back on her feet. Amused azure eyes glanced at the girls face. "Shinichi-Niichan?" The detective chuckled.
"Ran told me to answer the door. She's doing her hair right now." Ayumi sniffed the air. It wasn't uncommon for Shinichi to be seen in a suit, but the cologne he sprayed and his slightly styled hair indicated that this was no common suit day.
"Oh. You two must be going on a date today," she muttered, nodding at her own deductions as Shinichi smiled lightly. "Do you mind if I borrow her for a moment, I just need her advice on something?" The invitation in wasn't even hesitant and the eleven-year-old girl made a bee-line path straight to Ran's room.
A couple of knocks and she was in the warm embrace of the kind hearted karate champion. "Ayumi-chan! What are you doing here? I've missed you." Ayumi missed her too. Having everyone who was older than her but nonetheless close, at college nearly all the time was rather lonely and boring.
"Can I ask you a few questions?" Ran blinked, smiling warmly.
"Anything. What is it?"
"How do you tell what someone's sexuality is?" Ayumi asked boldly. Ran turned into a stuttering mess, muttering things about 'being too young to ask such things' and 'what brought this along'. "I really need to know." Now Ayumi felt like she was pleading, but she wanted - needed - to act on her feelings before her heart simply burst. The constant beating always left her chest hurting.
"I-I'm not sure." The karate master told her honestly. "Why do you need to know?"
Ayumi was already out the door before she finished the sentence, bottling up disappointment and frustration.
........................................
Sera was going to be hard to track down. And that's what Ayumi thought up until the point she literally ran into said girl. Painfully. She was sure she was going to have bruises later. Ouch.
"Oh!" The older detective explained. "Well, if it isn't Ayumi!" Rough hands shook her small ones in a form of greeting as the two smiled at each other. At least she didn't have to look for Sera! Now, to change tactics and try to be subtle.
"Hey, um, Sera-san." Ayumi started, this time a little nervous that the detective could piece two-and-two together, but confidence came back when she realised that Sera knowing wasn't exactly a bad thing. She didn't seem like the kind of person who would tell. "How do you tell a person who happens to be a girl and possible straight that you maybe like, um, love them?" So much for subtle.
The answer was surprisingly simple. "I would be straight forward. Just tell them."
Ayumi took this into consideration. Perhaps she could be straightforward and things would work out with Ai. Maybe. She'd just have to try.
With a little determination and a lot of self-pep talks, Haibara Ai would know of Ayumi's feelings by the next Monday. And perhaps, with a little hope, return them.
A/N: Sooo! I still owe sgchan a huge apology for being extremely late with this, so once again, I am sorry! I'm also sorry this was rather bad because I actually don't ship Ayumi with anyone currently. I see her growing up strong and independent for the most part.... so it was completely out of my element but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!!! I'm sorry, again, for being late! Really really late!
