Hi! Here's my entry for the exchange.
Many thanks to sgchan for her beta services! This is my first time writing in english, and her help was essential for this drabble to happen at all.
Prompt: "For a change, nobody died."
His statement to the police officer was a precise and concise account of the events that had happened that evening: The attempted robbery of a foreign tourist on Dōtonbori Avenue which both Kazuha and Heiji managed to stop, the chase he gave to the robber, and the ensuing clash with a whole gang devoted to taking advantage of inattentive visitors of Osaka. Thanks to the call Kazuha made to Inspector Otaki for reinforcements, they were able to stop the man who Heiji had been chasing when, still high on adrenaline and who knows what else, jumped at the detective, knife in hand. The fight was short, but the robber managed to land a shallow stab wound to his side.
Now Heiji was alone in one of the little rooms off the ER, the fluorescent lights making everything look bright and cold, while in the hallway outside Otaki-han's strong voice boomed, probably giving instructions regarding the robbers to his squad.
Suddenly, the voice grew softer. After a moment of quiet conversation outside the door, Kazuha entered the room, her steps light on the tiled floor, her face pale and eyes downcast.
"You look awful," Heiji said as a greeting.
"Better than you," was the quiet response. The paramedics had managed to clean the defensive wounds on his hands and a tiny scratch on his face, but his clothes were covered in dried blood, a rusty red that originated from the wound in his side.
"Your father is on his way here, Otaki-han just called him." She stopped at the end of his bed, unsure where to stand. "How is- does it hurt?"
He patted lightly at his side where the knife wound was. "No, the doc put an anesthetic on it before stitchin'."
"Ah, good." She averted her eyes, not looking at him. "Still, so much blood..."
"The knife didn't pierce the abdominal cavity, so is all right." Even after his words, Kazuha didn't raise her head, and Heiji could see her shoulders trembling slightly.
"No, it's not all right, you idiot detective!"
"Hey, look at me." Slowly, the girl lifted her head, eyes watery, and yet she tried stubbornly to keep the tears from falling. "I'm fine. All the bad guys were arrested." He offered his hand and she took it, gripping tightly to him. "Nobody died for a change."
"You stupid idiot." The harsh words were spoken softly, no true intent to harm in them. Heiji squeezed her hand lightly, no mocking remarks this time.
They both knew better. They were extremely lucky that nobody died.
