Prompt: Kaito working excessively hard at magic or entirely avoiding magic, after/because of Toichi's death?
Words: 416
Kuroba Toichi died three months before Kaito's tenth birthday, the promise of a magic show all but burned up in flames. Chikage and her son buried an empty coffin with only a picture of the magicians smiling face as doves were sent to the sky during the funeral.
Kaito silently escaped the crowd of grievers, getting eagerly away from the non-stop apologies from everyone there. Sorry wouldn't bring his dad back. Sorry wouldn't replace this hole in his heart. In his mother's heart. Sorry didn't help.
But the doves did.
The doves that were originally his father's were left to him after his unexpected death and they all treated their new owner happily, nuzzling in and out of his sleeves in attempt to aid their disappearing act. The young Kuroba smiled. He would take care of them in place of his father and they would be that well-needed companions for the years to come.
The soft cooing of the birds soothed the young boy into a thankfully dreamless slumber and he smiled contently, curled up within himself as they perched on his head and shoulder.
He woke up with a sore back, but couldn't bring himself to care as he felt the doves move around under his shirt. He giggled as they tickled him mercilessly before snapping his fingers like he saw his father do once. They stopped and appeared all around him in an instant.
Indigo eyes widened with curiosity and he whistled just to see their reaction. They were up his sleeves once more before he could even yelp and he quickly snapped them back out.
A couple hours and more than a few pecks later, Kaito thought he got a pretty good hang of the doves and was rather proud of himself. His mother and Jii thought so too when they noticed how they now seemed to follow Kaito everywhere.
A couple of weeks after the funeral, Chikage finally let her baby go back to school. There he practiced coin and card tricks excessively during his free time and his doves became well known non-official members of his class. But it was all okay. The teacher liked them. And so did Aoko.
Magic slowly seeped into his life even without his father's influence and Kaito buried himself into practicing the art, his path already chosen in his mind.
If anyone asked why he chose magic. He would reply that it was because of doves.
I don't really understand this prompt but yeah~ I kinda focused on doves since they've been on my mind (for some reason) so I think it kinda goes against the prompt. I didn't go with the "because" of his father's death thing and instead went with the "after" his father's death.
Because of doves. I love doves..
