. : A Humble Proposal : .
[ or: How a detective says "be my world?" :: in 842 words ]
Almost as soon as the idea slid into mind -- seriously slid into mind, not the just idle wonderings and dreams of a detective who was already obviously in way over his head -- issues immediately came up.
Time. Placement. And -- everything in general, all the materials he'd have to get together, all the people he'd have to contact for approval, all the planning that would play into this one ( probably ) stupid idea that could possibly ruin everything he had ( or make it infinitely better ), and... He just wasn't sure if it really was worth risking it all for this. What he had now was amazing, already, and he was happy...
... But it could be so much more, too...
It wasn't the first time Wataru had hesitated on an idea, and it certainly wouldn't be the last, either. However, after stalling himself for weeks and weeks on end, nearly a full month of indecisive wavering, he eventually resolved to go on ahead with it. Backing down or lingering in the middle wouldn't get anything done on his end, after all.
The worst possibility, he figured, was that he would be turned down. It would... hurt, definitely, but it wasn't like -- well -- his life at stake --
Actually, he wasn't going to think down that line of thought. He'd end up talking himself out of it, he knew, and that would be stupid after waiting for so long already. At least, this way, it wouldn't be the endless torture of not knowing, nor the stupidity of not trying when maybe, just maybe, he wouldn't be shot down.
Vain hope, probably. But there was nothing else he could really do.
He took it slow, and calm. Picked out a place. Picked out a date. Bought the items needed. Spoke with those he needed to, and even to those he didn't strictly "need" to. ( He wanted to do this right. Thorough. ) He found himself wanting to ask Miwako for her opinion, but knew quite well the folly of that. Besides, whatever he could ask her would only come into play if...
...
"Takagi-keiji," the little boy chirped with an odd gleam in his eye, not malicious but rather... teasing ( and... sad? ). "I hope it all goes well for you."
"Ah... Conan-kun?"
"Good luck." A wave, a smile, and a turned back as he darted after his friends. ( But good luck for what, the few people he'd told had been sworn to secrecy and were hardly even in contact with Conan-kun...? )
...
"Satou-san--"
"Hey, hey. We're off-duty, Wataru." A brilliant smile in his direction, as she opened a bottle of water. "Didn't we say a while back that first names were alright outside of the job?"
"Er -- right." And usually he did, it was just... Mindset differences. Usually was lighter, guard dropped in a certain way, but he was a touch more on edge than he usually was, when spending time with her. She might've noticed. Maybe she didn't. Hopefully, she didn't... He'd tried quite hard to keep things mostly on the hush before this moment. "Thank you for agreeing to take some time off with me today."
"Of course. We haven't had a break in a while, so this is wonderful." Her gaze flitted out to the sea, the whispers of waves as they met the shoreline, a thoughtful hum on her lips. "Thank you for bringing me here. Never thought I'd be sitting on a beach for an afternoon, just for the sake of it... It's beautiful, though."
... It wasn't just for the sake of it, but she didn't know that. Yet.
He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. Closed it, cleared his throat, and then tried again. "Actually, Miwako, I have something I'd like to ask you."
"Yeah?" Turned her eyes back towards him, bright with curiosity.
"I was thinking about -- well, a lot of things." Shifted, slightly. Hopefully unnoticed, as his words held her attention instead, but then again, he was sliding out of his chair as he spoke. "But there was this one idea I had -- I was divided on it until a short while ago, but I came to a decision on it. And..." Faltered.
She picked up, urged him on. "And?" Openly curious, now, and attentive.
"... I think it would work out." Deep breaths, calm, ( was it possible to be so nervous that he'd stopped shaking at all by this point? ). "Don't feel pressured one way or another, but..."
And then he knelt, one knee sinking a short centimeter or two into the sand, and she froze, the actions registering as brief confusion and then surprise, dancing over her face in a myriad of expressions --
A ring in his hand, words on his tongue, blood rushing to his cheeks already --
"Satou Miwako, would you allow me the honor of marrying you?"
{ prompt: a beach, a ring, and a surprise revealing. ♥ }
[ AN: Kind of thought the prompt was a touch spoilery ( ... like I didn't make enough implications in the body? ), so I moved it over here to the bottom, oops. Lemme know if you still want it up at the top~ I'll admit, I'm a bit ( see: a L O T ) nervous about this since it's been a while since I wrote anything that wasn't roleplay oriented ( and I've never written Takagi and Satou oops ), and I know there's a have of... not-so-happy-shippers going around. And I had no clue which ship I was going to sail for this, because, well, //points at multishipping trash in the mirror// but yeah. ( wasn't even sure if I wanted to go through with it or if I wanted to turn it into some crack situation, tbh ) Hope the prompter enjoyed uwu !! ]
