Hello, I go by Alisa Yang (not my real name, but I like realistic pen names). I'm a fanfic writer and like other people before me, I found this forum through other people's mentions on FF.net. I was surprised that there was an active fanfic community out here so I figured I'd sign up and see what it's like. My only other stuff at FF.net are a couple Guilty Crown novels, but I will start posting my first Magic Kaito fanfic starting either this Saturday or the one after, because I'm a creature of habit and I like posting new chapters on Saturday nights my time (which is early Sunday for most of the world). Creature of habit also means that once I start I post a new chapter every Saturday until it's done. Even though I write fanfics, I consider myself more of a reader. When I write it's because the itch I want scratched has not been met by any other fanfic I've found, so I write what I wish someone else had done. It's a weird affliction. ~Alisa

Hello and welcome, as someone who has recently joined myself, I can say with no regrets that signing up was an amazing decision. Poirot Cafe is really fun and welcoming. I hope you'll enjoy both the Poirot Cafe itself and the people who frequent here.

Hey Alisa! Welcome to Poirot Cafe! Okay, I'm super amazed that you can stay on track updating fanfics that regularly. As for me . . . *glances at fanfic that hasn't been updated in months, then at the fanfic that's waiting to be updated once the first one is finished* *sighs*

Hi there Alisa! Welcome to the forum! Hope to see you a lot soon... Hehe, and I know what you mean about that itch, although half the time I'm usually oblivious of what's left unwritten, teehee... xD By the way, I go by the name Quincy... the random-crazy person who pops up in weird moments. Enjoy your stay! *inserts obligatory waving Heiji*

Thanks, everyone. I've been poking around. Going to try not to lurk too much. I only have a small window of time late in the evening on weekdays when I'm free to pop on forums. Nikudou, when I was in school I decided that I wanted to be a professional writer, and I knew that professional writers couldn't afford to wait for a muse to come or they'd never get paid. It's taken some training time, but now my muse is a plow horse and I'm pushing the plow right behind it. We get stuff done. I actually find it easier to work faster than slower because then I don't have to spend as much time refreshing my memory on old chapters. I do work with an outline though, so I don't have to wonder what happens next. I basically lay out as much as I can in pre-planning and then sprint somewhere between 2000-3000 words a week until the project is complete.

Yeah, that makes sense. I've got the outline thing down, I just need practice with training my muse.

That sounds similar to my approach. I do really flexible outlines with the basic main events and points, making notes of any specific lines or dialogue or the like that I know I want to use, and then I just sit down and pound it out, even when I don't feel like it. Sometimes forcing it when I'm not particularly feeling inspired really works. Sometimes I have to set one project to the side and work on another for a week or so so that I can come back refreshed. I typically put out 1,667 words or more a day when I'm in my groove. A really good day is 2,000 or 3,000 with the occasional 4,000 in there. The most I've done this year was 6,000 one Saturday when I was working on What's Really Inside.
I wish you luck in your DCMK writing ventures!

Thanks! And 6000 words in one day is really impressive! I'm not very bursty, so I usually write a bit every weekday, and sometimes on weekends if I really need to hit a deadline.

Haha. Thanks. Yeah, 6,000 happened once, but I spent the better part of my day at it. ^.^; 2,000 or so a day is far more typical for me.
