Welp, looks like I joined the 'I pretend I can draw' club .. though I don't know yet if it's something I'll enjoy longterm or if it's one of my phases that will blow over in a week or two Anyway, here is a current WIP. It's the first thing (well, the second technically, but you can't really compare a piano to a person) I've drawn in many years, so I worked (of?) off a picture, but I'm working on another one that's more freestyle. It's a bit of a mess and I can't tell you how many times I have redrawn the hair ... and I'm still not that happy with it, but it looks a lot better than two days ago, so yay! I'm a bit lost though when it comes to the eyes and clothing, if you have any tips for those, pleeease tell me? *puppy eyes* And is it just me or does the neck look a bit long? I'm not sure Also, the other one I'm working on is Kaito sitting on a chair backwards and I'm kinda struggling with the pose in general, so if you have any tips for that, I'd be eternally grateful That's it for now Rainbow over and out *throws glitterbomb and vanishes*

You did a great job! Really, I mean it. And and and the expression is like 'huh?' (I'm not good ad explaining things but I'll try to give u tips)
If u want the neck a bit longer (uhhh sexy neck ///) try to draw the shoulder a bit wider. Approximately as big as a head for each shoulder (so that'll make human body 3-head in size). that's the only thing I can tell you... sorry.
And I suddenly remember this anime once broadasted on Animax. the character's neck was like a head long :')

I think he looks really good! It's better than what I can draw by hand these days. ^_^

It's good! The hair turned out great, but yeah, the neck is a bit long . . . Eyes, I wouldn't know how to explain if I tried, and clothes I have no idea. Sorry

Like Nastumi said, the hair looks really nice. I can't ever seem to get his hair down so I really like how you were able to accomplish that Pretty well for not drawing in a long time! As for poses, I usually just search up 'people sitting' or something like that in order to get an idea. I really want to get one of those artist pose reference dolls...

aww Kaito looks adorable I'm jealous of how you are able to draw his hair.<3 I think the eyes and uniform look nice actually!
what might help is try to draw the eyes closer together. the distance between two eyes is approx. the size of one eye .. means, if your Kaito's eye is 2cm long then the distance between both eyes would be about 2 cms too.
and about the neck, since the uniform has a pretty big collar I think it would cover most of the neck, so you can draw the chin right above the front of the collar. the chin also obstructs part of the neck so you don't usually have to draw the whole neck ^^
aside from those two things it looks pretty awesome! can't wait to see more of your drawings! <33

I really can't draw for beans anymore, so I have useful advice for you. All I can say is that besides the long neck, the rest of it looks really good! Like people have been saying, I think you did a really good job with the hair. I hear that that's one of the hardest parts of Kaito to draw, so I think you did awesome. I really like the eyes too. Those turned out really well! Good luck with your continued efforts!

I agree with Mikauzoran. The neck's a bit long, but I've always found it hard to judge when drawing by hand, making it either too long or too short. It's tough. And Hair can be very difficult to draw most of the time too. It's always been one of the aspects I struggle with when drawing characters, even on my computer. When I was drawing both Kaito and Makoto's hair for my DCMK Digimon collection, I kept growling and erasing and having to redraw the hair because of all those damn spikes! I surprisingly didn't have too much trouble with Hakuba's hair, however... But don't get me started on girl's hair! UGH! This past week I've really struggled with Ran, Aoko and Kazuha's hair when drawing them for my Pokemon Trainers AU collection. I think you're doing just fine. Nothing's perfect. I really like the way you drew Kaito's eyes. Are you going to color this?

If he's gonna be sitting in a chair backwards, that's a typically fairly slouched position, so the neck and shoulders would appear even shorter than they normally would when sitting up. Also, with the shoulders, you might want to slope the shoulders some. The trapezius gives the shoulders their slope, so typically you only see flat shoulders like that on people with no muscle at all. As to the hair, it's a bit bigger on the right (our right) than it is on the left - what you can try to do is draw a circle for the skull and then make sure the hair is a fairly even coating around it to avoid the head seeming lopsided. For the clothing, you're doing alright on giving the fabric stiffness and thickness, but what you might want to pay a bit more attention to is perspective - despite this being a very straight-on shot, you've given the shirt collar a tilt, so it looks like it's cut to be higher in the back than in the front. In general, though, if you have any symmetry/anatomy concerns, what works for me is holding the drawing up to a mirror. For some reason, flipping it horizontally like that will let your brain see things wrong with it that you couldn't before. Not sure why, but it works. But in any case. Good effort! I like the emotion you've gotten here - I kind of wonder what he saw to make him so suprised.

bananavora: Thanks And also thanks for tip on longer necks, might be useful for another drawing @nikudou Natsumi: Thank you and yeah, I thought it was a tad too long. Not sure if I'll redo it for this one, but it's something I'll keep an eye on in the future kkrazy256: Thanks! Oh yeah, one of those dolls would be useful .. I think we actually had one once, but it might have ended up at my father's *note to self: look into that* fory: Thanks - but I'm surprised you like the unfiorm - like it's not even half done and right now I think it looks terrible But thanks for the tip on the eyes - are they too far apart in this one? Looking at it with what you said in mind, I think maybe just a little bit? So either they need to be bigger or closer together? And yeah .. the neck, but as I said to Natsumi, I don't know if I'll redo it here - depends on how much it bugs me Mikauzoran: Thank you And I'm assuming that you forgot the 'no' in your first sentence? Yeah the hair is a pain - and speaking of that: this one strand/spike that falls in his face, that big one in the middle, is just a tad too short .. I don't know why that irks me so much, but I have to fix that. SharaRaizel: Thanks. I hear you, and I always had a bit trouble with proportions. At least the neck turned out just a bit, and not ridiciuosly, long Is the girl's hair really that difficult to draw? I don't know yet if I'll color it, will probably decide when it's finished. ichthyophobia: Thanks, and I'm glad I got the 'huh, what?' expression across ^-^. Yeah, you're right about the hair, except when I look at the picture I use for reference, I think the right (our right) side is actually fine, but the left side is too short/small - but thanks for the circle tip! I haven't really worked on the uniform yet, but thanks for the tip on perspective, I'll try to keep that in mind. And thanks for the mirror tip too, that's really useful Also thank you for all the advice on the sitting backwards pose - what I tried for that was positioning myself like that in front of a mirror. I have a better idea now how it's supposed to look, just gotta find out how to actually draw it But I'll get there with some time, experimenting and practice.

I can see what you mean with the neck, but the face is really well done! I love how you draw! To make it really look like he's sitting in a chair, I think the best way to trick everyone into seeing it is just drawing the back of the chair with his arms in view somehow. But of course, you were probably going to do that anyway, so I'll just take my comment and sit in the corner ^_^ great job and please post more!

So, I shortened the neck a bit and it definitely looks better now, and I'm trying to figure out how to fix the lopsided hair. Right side smaller or left side bigger? @natsumi: This is the picture

Ah. See, in your drawing, it looks like Kaito is looking head on, but in your reference picture he's turned a tiny bit to the side. So that makes the hair thing weird.

Geez, time flies by so fast lately. Haven't gotten around to working on it, but yeah I noticed that his head was turned ... just a little too late... oh well. In other news, I have an absolutely terrible (but colorful) addition to my cards series, thanks to a certain phantom thief. If you have no idea what I'm talking about: I kinda have this thing going where I set myself a theme and then I do a picture with cards and that theme. Simple. They're not that great, but it's nice practice for my non-existent digital art skills. I haven't posted them here, because it's not really fanart ... but I guess you can count the latest one? Err...can't add it as an attachment, file is too big, but here's the link to the tumblr post.
