So in the themed writing contest thread for the 8th competition (betrayed), we were talking about how all these angsty things come to mind with that theme. So TinyTantei said that if she won, she would make the theme marshmallows because (in her words), "You can't angst over marshmallows". Some of us took that statement as a challenge and came up with ideas that could make marshmallows angsty. So, using Tiny's statement as my prompt, I created this small seventeen-sentence fic. Enjoy.
Kaito stared blankly at the marshmallow at the end of his stick over the fire. He watched as the heat melted it and, despite the marshmallow's effort to stay on the stick, the fire licked the sugar brown. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. He wanted to reach out and save the marshmallow, but he was in some kind of a trance. Slowly, it started melting. The stress destroying the sweet, sugary covering, leaving behind a hard, sticky piece of wood. The melted white fluff dropped into the fire and expanded in a slow motion explosion, turning a crumbling black along the way. The things Kaito and Kid were dealing with; the pain, the fear, the anger.
"Hey, Kaito!" The magician blinked, and glanced up at his childhood friend. "Are you even paying attention? You just let your marshmallow fall into the fire!"
"Oh, right. Sorry, Aoko." Kaito grinned and rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. Then he rose to put another marshmallow on his stick. Another mask over his heart.

I guess you did a good job proving her wrong. This was pretty darn angsty, haha. I could see this being part of a larger story for sure. But it was just the perfect length for this scene.

Thanks! Really? I don't consider myself good at doing angst, so . . . Maybe it's just that I haven't had a lot of practice with that. I was still worried that this wasn't that angsty, except for that last paragraph.
