To be honest, I couldn't tell there was shading at all until I really looked for it. There's subtle, and then there's subtle to the point of nonexistence - you could probably stand to be bolder with your shadows. With the colors you've picked, they're so light already that without shadows the highlights won't show. The sharp highlights on the guitar look good though. If this was intended to study light bouncing - as in, sharp, hard highlights off a reflective or shiny surface - this might not have been the best picture to try? Save the guitar, everything's fairly soft, skin and clothes and hair, and they don't typically have hard highlights unless you have a very strong light source. Which, considering the strength of your shadows, you don't really have here. Soft or rough surfaces tend to have soft highlights, since light coming off gets bounced in multiple directions and ends up diffuse. I know this can be difficult to do with cell shading, but it means that if you make the highlights too bright the surfaces will look plastic. If you're in love with this picture for this purpose, put some light in her hair - hair's shiny enough that sharp lights work on it, and the light will have higher contrast against the darker areas and make it more obvious that there's shading at all. Though in general for the rest of it, I'd work more on the shadows here than trying to add more highlights - it's pretty bright already. (Additional note: pick a direction for your light source. It doesn't seem to be consistent - light on the guitar, arms, and face seem to indicate an upper light source, while on the shoulder there's a pretty significant shadow on the uppermost bit, which is contradictory. Also if the light source is up top there should be shading on her stomach where she's curled over - and there isn't.) Anyway. I hope that's not too much feedback. I got shanghaied into running a critique group on dA at one point and it's never really worn off. Good work so far though!

Yes you *glomps ichthy*! You're just the person to ask about this, since you've played with light and shadow before. And no, it's not too much feedback, IMHO. I need more of that in my life, generally speaking. I'll take all these and keep it for reference. And if you still have anything else to add please do not hesitate. (Okay first of all, I've written around four-five paragraphs reply to your feedback but then internet *glares at internet* royally screwed it up for me so I have no idea how to reconstruct those paragraphs again, please forgive me. It was all so perfect but then... T^T RAWR you know how you just start writing something and then you forget what it is about and just... when you read it again you get all shocked because it doesn't sound like you wrote it at all? That's the feeling I have right now... and I can't remember how what I wrote goes) Anyways, basically I was saying something about you being right with what you said about inconsistency. I was gonna tell you you're right, that I have this nasty habit of knowing where the light source is but then I just start forgetting halfway (not on purpose, of course) and I just start doing what feels right... except it's not, most of the time. hahah Also... I said something about my hesitations probably showing in my pieces. On Bassist Sera it's because a part of me didn't want her to end up looking like a piece of porcelain or something. Also, I didn't put any highlights on her clothes, save for her skirt, which would partly explain the 'subtle to the point of nonexistence' thing. Lately I've been catching myself staring at people, just looking at how light bounces on them. It's really educational... until it gets creepy at some point (if you think about it, it's really creepy). I've always just observed shapes and curves and basically how things look like but I'm new at both digital art and contrasts. Funny how light and shadows play on surfaces... and now that I think about it humans are complicated in more ways than one so... do you think starting with still life is my safest bet right now? So... yeah... I'm probably gonna stick with my sketchypad in the next few days (or months, IDK). Thanks very much! ^_^ (Also, MIKAU! I've been gone for too long! IMYSM! *cyber hugs*)

I know exactly what you mean about the internet screwing up. That just happened to me trying to reply here. As far as practicing on humans versus still life goes, I don't know that it matters much; either way you'll get decent practice with shadow and shape. Though if you only do humans, you're never going to learn where to put strong highlights (since skin generally doesn't have them), so I'd recommend some still life at minimum. Also, still life sits still longer. But if you're wanting to learn more realistic light-and-shadow-and-shape shading, I'd strongly recommend against practicing on anime/manga characters! The more exaggerated/stylized features make it *really* hard to figure out where the actual planes of the face are, especially around the nose and eyes. I made that mistake for years. Anyway. Hopefully that helps.

It does, Ichthy. Thankies!~ ... So... Bill-Kaito, anyone? (I started this even before the final episode came out. Dunno what to do with this... can't decide whether to use ink or colored pencils so... heheh x"D) I was supposed to do Conan for this, (cos I happened to see Nikudou Natsumi -cchi's Pine Cone drawing) but I'm afraid the poor child might freak out, so I decided to Bill-ify(?) Kaito instead. At least he didn't freak out as much And then it got crowded cos of mindscape-Kaito's supposedly-transparent-ish head, and the little codes and words I placed here and there... I'm supposed to color this but I was kinda afraid I'd ruin it so I just left it as is... all including my messy notesy-notes xD aaaaand I'm not sure if I wrote those (*points at Jap charas to the right*) right. I just wrote according to what I heard from that Japanese dubbed Sock Opera clip. But darn, evil-possessed Kaito sure is fun to draw! *cackles* {for those who do not want to go through the trouble of deciphering...} top (Vigenere code solvable by key "MINDSCAPE"): "SORRY, KID, BUT YOU'RE MY PUPPET NOW!"
middle (Atbash): "SEISHIN SEKAI HE YOUKOSO"
bottom (A1Z26): "WELCOME TO THE MIDSCAPE, KID!"

Ahhhh I love it, Quincy XD I would've translated the codes myself but I didn't have my translator on at the moment and I'm in school and didn't want to do it slowly. And anything to do with Bill is fun to draw XD

It's great! I love evil Kaito, in general, and fusing him with Bill is awesome! x3
But how can you stop me... if YOU DON'T EXIST?! MUAHAHAHA! I love that sentence, love to see it here as well! The codes are cool as well
Funny fact: when I think of Bill possessing a human the first thing I can imagine him doing is watching a 3D movie, since he can't do it on his original form (you know, having one eye and all... xD)

Isn't heee?~ Oh my gosh, makes me want to ask Aoyama-sensei too if Masumi and Saguru can ever meet just to see them interact in canon. BTW forgot to mention here what I said on my DA account. This is supposed to go with a fic about Kaito introducing them to each other to get Hakuba away from Aoko (LOL), but then he later on realizes it's a bad idea when they teamed up against KID . That... and something else *whistles innocently* But right now I'm focusing on working on my ongoing fics so I can't write it yet

And so, after a while... new fanart!~ ^_^v I wanted to do something with the Akai siblings involved, so I thought, why not put them in uniform? And then, whilst wondering once again about their age gaps, this happened... xD Remember how, in the Blush Mermaid heist, Nakamori-keibu pulled on Masumi's cheek to check if she's not in disguise, and as payback she kicks him hard in the nuts ? Well from there came this idea that maybe she really, really, REALLY hates getting her cheeks pulled (except maybe if it was Shuu-nii who was doing the cheek-pulling) and just learned how to deal with it by inducing pain or something ROFL... xD And so I present to you, the Akai siblings on Masumi's first day of school. (Dorky Chuukichi alert!~) ... Although, I dunno, Mii-tan doesn't look like a three-year-old but maybe that's just me, and I forgot to make her feet dangle in that last panel over there xD and once again, super messy drawing and I blame the pen for it... again I need a title I was thinking along the lines of "Siscon" but it sounds bleh...

Hahaha, it's hilarious. :)Beware of bitting little girl~ Mii-tan on the first panel is so cute, I can see her as a three year old.

How about "Squeezably Sharp" as a title? It plays of a brand of bathroom tissue whose slogan is squeezably soft.

I shall credit you on DA *showers cyber hugs and cookies* So, does it go like, "(Brand name): Squeezably Soft" or something?
