Well there's already a thread on what is RP, but I suppose I can help contribute a little with this. This is all I know from my experience RPing on tumblr and it might not be the same as other forums/websites.
Type:
-One on one (1x1) role play.
This is when only two people role play together, and sometimes each person has to rp more than one characters. Usually threads like these are shippy threads that involves only your ship but of course, it is not limited to only this. This type of threads can either starts with two people plotting/planning together before roleplaying, or an open starter is posted for a random person to join.
-Group role play.
This had already been done in this forum. I don't have a lot of experience with group RPs so if anyone knows more about this do add in!
Length:
-SMS/texting
I've never seen this outside of tumblr, but I find this is one of the most casual and fun way to RP. Basically you pretend to be (your character of choice) texting or chatting in a chatroom. That's it. Not much writing skill is needed for this honestly, and it can quickly turn wild and weird. Example:
[Shinichi]
ran hepl me I juts boght a goat
[Shinichi]
2 goats
[Ran]
r u drunk?!?!?
[Shinichi]
no???!?!?? 1!??
[Shinichi]
help pls ths dud just keEP G IVING mE GOATS
[Shinichi]
te goast r tryin to eat my pants
[Shinichi]
rrrraaaaaannanaanan?
[Ran]
?!?!??
[Shinichi]
okya im srry m drunk
[Shinichi]
its hatoris fault tho
Yeah its really random and people are usually drunk. But it's fun and I sorta went overboard there but... yeah. You don't necessarily have to do only one text per reply; your character can be spamming the other characters.
-Chat
I believe this is commonly done on Instagram and Facebook and everyone knows what it is. The most basic of the basics of rping. Example:
Conan: *smirks* I am Edogawa Conan. A d-
The detective boys: And the Detective Boys!
Suspect 1: *laughs* hah! Just a bunch of kids!
And so on!
-One liner
Usually used for short role plays that mainly consist of dialogues. The replies are usually one or two sentences long. Example:
Role player A: "Shut up!!! You never listen to me," she screamed.
Role player B: He quickly pulled her into a kiss before she could continue, effectively silencing her.
-Paragraph
For those who wanna try role playing as a way to improve your writing as well as have fun, it's good to start with this. Replies are usually one or two paragraphs long. Example:
A: The room was completely empty when they arrived, the walls caked in layers of dust and grime and spiderweb covered the ceiling and corners. The Forbidden Room had been opened recently, Shinichi grimly noted as he stared at the door that they had just forced open. The doorknobs from both the inside and the outside of the door stood out from the rest of the room, free from dust and webs.
Their only light source was the candle he held, which started to flicker ominously the moment the enter the room.
-Multi-para
Around four to five paragraphs long. I like this length the best because I feel that with some good plotting done beforehand, this length is perfect to give ample descriptions and move the story along nicely. Example:

To his left, Ran was clinging onto him as if he was her lifeline and trembled, her lips quivering and her eyes teary. Which made him feel a little bad, for letting her come along despite knowing that she feared the supernatural. At the same time he was angry and annoyed, because she refused to stay outside and wait for him and instead persistently followed him until they were far in enough he was afraid to let her go back out alone. It didn't help her when they realized that the rumours were true; electronic devices didn't work in there. Their torchlights went out and he had to grab a candle stand nearby and lit that up.
The Red Mansion, rumored to be haunted, was visited by a couple of students from their school. Those students left screaming and crying, one of them coming to him for help.
"We found a body!!!" he cried. "And tried to call the police but nothing worked. Then suddenly there was something moving in the back of the room and we all Ran for our lives."
Of course, godmodding is greatly discouraged usually so only mention that the character is doing something after that character's rper had mentioned it.
-Novella
When you see a wall of text is when you've spotted a novella reply. Novella repliers usually put in very detailed descriptions of things, and have a lot of stuff going on in a single reply. I'm not gonna do an example for this one lol because I'm lazy.
