Pokemon Trainer Saguru Hakuba
And here we are! The last of the Pokemon Trainer Gosho Boys is complete! I'm so happy! Admittedly Saguru is my favorite of the four so his information is a little more detailed but whatever, here's his background for my Journey in Hoenn fan fic:
Hakuba Saguru is originally from Ecruteak City in the Johto region where he lived with both of his parents until their divorce. His father is the Gym Leader in Ecruteak City and his mother is a business woman from Slateport City in Hoenn. After their divorce Saguru moves with his mother to the Hoenn region where she resumes her position in her family's business, which deals with natural herbal and modern medicinal treatments for Pokemon. While growing up in Ecruteak City, Saguru was often bullied and mistreated because he looked foreign (he takes after his mother) and was seen as a scrawny weakling. Because of this, Saguru is a jaded and cold individual around most people, but kind to Pokémon. Saguru has dreams of becoming either a Pokémon Ranger or a healer. His medical knowledge is extensive and he helps Pokémon whenever he can. He knows his herbs and medicinal medicines due to his mother's family business, his upbringing in Ecruteak City and spending so much time with his grandfather, a Sage and Pokémon Researcher. He specializes in fire, ghost and dark type Pokémon.
Saguru's first Pokemon is his Growlithe. Growlithe was a gift from Saguru's father when he was five and is very protective of him. Because Saguru's parents are very busy people and because the other kids his age bullied him, Saguru grew up alone and the only real human contact he had was with his Grandfather and his nanny, Baaya, who would later marry his widower grandfather and become his grandmother when he was eight. Saguru's father gave Growlithe to Saguru as a means to shut the elder Hakuba up about how lonely Saguru was. Growlithe takes his job as Saguru's companion very seriously and sticks by his side. He's loyal and brave and is always ready to fight for Saguru and follow his every command. He's hardly ever in his Pokeball unless Saguru orders him inside (which is practically never). He is Saguru's shadow and, because of the bullying that Saguru suffered at the hands of his peers in Ecruteak, is very mistrusting of others Saguru's age. Heiji swears Growlithe is a demon dog because it's always growling at him.
Even though Saguru is the youngest out of our four main heroes and didn't turn ten until after moving to Hoenn with his mother, Saguru was given Chikorita from Pokemon Professor Layton back in Johto before the move. Saguru's grandfather is an old time friend of the Pokemon Professor in Johto and made special arrangements with both Layton and Agasa to allow Saguru to receive his starter Pokemon early and from the Johto Region, though he was still not allowed to begin his journey until after he turned ten and visited Professor Agasa to receive his official Pokemon Trainer's license and Pokedex. Chikorita immediately took to Saguru, loving him for his gentleness and calm demeanor. It's a cheery Pokemon and loves to play around, the opposite of Growlithe, but the two get along well due to their shared adoration for their trainer. Chikorita practically lives to get Saguru to laugh and smile, feeling very proud when it does so.
Saguru's Eevee is special. It's a shiny. Because Saguru's mother is from Hoenn, he's visited the region many times in the past, especially an Eevee farm where his Uncle Lyle and his wife Kikyo breed Eevees. Soon after Saguru starts his journey as a Pokémon Trainer, he goes to visit the farm on his way back to Slateport. A new litter of Eevees has recently hatched and when he arrives he notices that one is different from the rest. It’s smaller, weak from neglect, and has a shiny coat. The other Eevees and the evolved adults growl and hiss at it whenever it gets near them. The poor little thing is an outcast because it is different. Saguru can relate all too well to the Eevee and asks his uncle for permission to take it with him. His uncle agrees and Saguru spends a couple weeks nursing the baby Pokémon back to health until it’s ready to travel. Like Chikorita, Eevee instantly takes to Saguru, and, like Growlithe, Eevee is determined to protect it’s trainer. Eevee sometimes comes off as spoiled and mean, but it’s really just protective of and loves it’s trainer.
Even though Saguru has never really connected with either of his parents, Saguru sticks close to Slateport and checks in with his mother from time to time after be begins his journey. She's different after the divorce and their move to Hoenn, and is actually trying to connect with him, which he appreciates since he no longer has his grandfather and Baaya around. He mostly travels the routes between Slateport and his uncle Lyle's Eevee farm, but expands his travels little by little. He takes up Pokemon Coordinating for a while and that's how he first meets Kaito and beats him in a contest. He notices that Kaito's Pokemon are happy, but a little malnourished. He suggests that Kaito should take better care in what he feeds them and his advice is taken the wrong way. He has similar misunderstanding later after a match with Heiji at the Slateport Battle Tent and he tells him that he might want to back off a little on how hard he pushes his Pokemon in a match. Shinichi is the only one that Saguru doesn't really get into any conflicts with and is the first person he befriends. Both share a fascination with Pokemon care and often collaborate on recipes for Pokemon food and the best ways to care for different types of Pokemon.
And here is everybody all together with their official starter Pokemon! I had a lot of fun drawing them and I've decided that I'll eventually start on the girls next. I've got plans for both Digimon and Pokemon versions of the Gosho girls, so look forward to that!
