Summary: After the fall of the Black Organization, Ai takes the antidote and resumes her identity as Miyano Shiho, and Ayumi wonders whether the former's friendship with her had been genuine at all. Ayumi visits Shiho, looking for answers.
It was a cool autumn day, but, for Ayumi, it might as well be summer with the amount of sweat trickling down the side of her forehead. She stared at the doorbell of the Agasa household, one that she had rang so many times over the course of the past year. She had been through a lot of terrifying things, from kidnapping to having a knife against her face, but she was nowhere as nervous as she was at this moment. Her heart was thumping madly.
As an attempt to put off the much dreaded yet anticipated encounter, she turned around to look at the professor's front yard. She had heard on TV a few days earlier that green was a claming color, and she really needed that. During her sweep through the yard, however, her eyes had noticed the empty garage. The professor's Beetle was missing, and she didn't know whether to be relieved or disappointed. Ai could still be home, though.
She was by herself, with neither Mitsuhiko nor Genta for back up. They didn't even know she was going to be here; she said she was going out of town with her parents this weekend. She had to do this on her own. She had to talk to Ai, no, Miyano-san? Shiho-oneesan? Ayumi didn't know anymore how to refer to her friend, but she was absolutely certain she couldn't call her Ai-chan, at least, not to her face, anyway. In her head, Ai-chan was still Ai-chan.
Ayumi smiled, remembering how she was the only one in their group allowed to call Ai by her first name? It had been a humonguous win for Ayumi, to win the trust of her reserved, mature friend. Ayumi's smile quickly turned into a frown upon realizing it could've been all an act in order to keep her cover? Did Ai even consider her a friend? Or did she just tolerate her?
It had already been a month since she and Conan had taken the antidote, and their case-solving band of five had been whittled down to three. Mitsuhiko and Genta still had some interest in solving mysteries, but they had been hard to come by since Conan resumed his life as Shinichi. Ayumi was fine with the lack of cases, as she wasn't all that motivated, anyway. She missed her friends too much, especially Ai. Oddly enough, despite nursing a huge crush on Conan, she didn't miss him as much, though it could be because she'd already grieved on the futility of her feelings toward him. Ai, on the other hand, was her best friend.
Running away was absolutely tempting right now, but Ayumi wouldn't. She wouldn't run away. She wanted to win. If she didn't have this conversation with Ai, she would regret it for the rest of her life. She had questions she needed to ask. She needed closure.
Fine, let's just get things done and over with. If Ai would reject her, she could just drown her miseries in the bag of her mom's chocolate-chip cookies she brought with her. And Maria-chan was proving to be a nice friend. . . .
"Yoshida-san! It's been a while," said a most-familiar voice, albeit with a cheerful tone that's reserved for all things related to Higo Ryousuke. Perhaps Ayumi's fears were unfounded, after all, and she had been a source of happiness for Ai.
Ayumi quickly turned around to the source of the voice. "Ai-chan!" She exclaimed with her usual exhuberance, without as much as a second thought. "Er, I mean, Shiho-oneesan," she corrected herself upon getting a good look at her friend's true form, carrying a bag of groceries. Even if Ai still did think of her fondly, things were no longer the same anymore. They lived in two different worlds now. Would she still want to hang out with her?
Ayumi noticed a gasp escaped Shiho's lips, and her eyes widening in surprise. Uh-oh. Was she being too familiar? Did she lose the privilege of calling her by her first name? "Miyano-san." Ayumi said the name in the coolest, most detached way she could possibly muster.
Shiho shook her head. "No, I think Shiho-oneesan sounds better, although, to be honest," she smiled, "I like Ai-chan best."
Ayumi's eyes glowed in absolute delight at her response, and she couldn't suppress the urge to smile.
Shiho continued, "But you shouldn't be calling me by the latter anymore. I'm not that person anymore."
I actually have written a bit more, but it's rather clunky, and I figure this is a good place to stop as any. Hopefully, this submission is an improvement over the last one, despite allowing myself to get distracted by a plunnie that's been festering on my mind due to the latest manga case. That said, I'm rather disappointed that I didn't get to work on this more, especially since Ayumi and Ai's friendship is something that I really enjoy and want to see more fic of. Ah, well.
