Summary: With the stern Mary away on yet another "business trip", it's another family dinner for two for Tsutomu and Shuuichi.
It was a source of pride for Tsutomu whenever he would watch his five-year-old son use chopsticks, even though the boy wasn't particularly good with them. With enough practice, Tsutomu was confident Shuuichi would learn it soon enough. What really impressed Tsutomu, however, was his son's silent determination. He neither complained nor lost his temper over how difficult it was, nor did he even request to use Western cutlery, instead. His son was quite the stubborn kid, even using his non-dominant right hand despite being left handed.
Perhaps Tsutomu should make Shuuichi's life just a little bit easier.
"Have you considered using your other hand?" Tsutomu framed his suggestion in the form of a question, in order to avoid wounding his son's pride. "You're left handed, after all."
Shuuichi stopped, taking this as an opportune break from his chopstick struggles, and said, "But Mama said I shouldn't eat using my left hand."
"I'm pretty sure she was only referring to Western-style meals," Tsutomu nonchalantly lied, as he was certain it wasn't the case. Oh, well, he could discuss that with Mary later. "There're a lot of rules for using chopsticks, but using your right hand isn't one of them."
"I see" was Shuuichi's terse reply, as he switched his chopsticks from his non-dominant, right hand to his dominant, left hand. While he didn't instantly master the skill, eating with his left hand was, indeed, easier. He still dropped his rice on occasion, but it was nowhere near as much as he did just moments earlier. And he was a lot more comfortable with his grip, too. A small grin formed on his lips.
"That looks much better," Tsutomu said with a smile.
"You won't tell Mama, won't you?"
So, he saw through my lie, huh? "I won't, but she'll easily find out once we eat a Japanese meal together."
"Or any other Asian cuisine, for that matter."
"Not all Asian cuisines use chopsticks, but, yes, I get your point."
"Thanks, Papa."
It's not the exuberant burst of gratitude displayed by other kids his age, but, for Tsutomu, it was more than enough.
Ugh, as I'm formatting this fic, it occurs to me that I didn't remember the line I was supposed to place in this fic was supposed to be "I think it looked better before", not " "That looks much better." As if this fic wasn't made of enough fail. I should've checked. *facepalms* Now, I'm really gonna have to scrap this and start all over again. Ironically enough, my original response to this prompt was supposed to be some sort of commentary on the rigid handedness rules in this series, but it didn't quite work out. Maybe I should try it again.
Mary or baby Shuukichi was supposed to be the third person in this scene, but I couldn't manage to squeeze either one in, sigh. This was supposed to be part of a longer fic attempting to explore Shuuichi's relationship with his parents and vice versa, but, as I was setting up the scene, things went in another direction, and I couldn't weave the chopsticks scene in, which was the inspiration for the fic to begin with. Thus, I decided to forego the setup, and just write the scene since the prompt was only asking for a scene, anyway, only for me to botch things up by misremembering the line I was supposed to add. *headdesks*
It's a mess, I know. I'm really, really, really sorry for that. I'm going to rewrite this, I swear! *kowtows profusely and runs off to hide under a rock*
