Prompt: Minerva Glass
Characters: Amuro Tooru and Suzuki Sonoko
"Grass!" a girl's voice yelled, followed by a tennis racket hitting a ball.
"Grass!" This time it was a man's voice that preceded the racket.
"Grass!" the girls voice repeated.
Kogoro Mouri wasn't sure what to make of the sight of his apprentice and his daughter's best friend shouting the word "grass" at one another during a tennis match.
I was just supposed to pick up the kids from a lesson… Kogoro complained to himself. With that thought, however, he tore his gaze away from Toru Amuro and Sonoko Suzuki to find his daughter Ran and his freeloader Conan on the sidelines, either watching the match or refereeing it.
Curiosity overwhelming apathy in this instance, Kogoro approached the children, who appeared distinctly bored with the display before them.
"Okay, what am I looking at?"
"Amuro-niichan and Sonoko-neechan are settling an argument with a tennis match," Conan explained.
"And why are they screaming 'grass' in English at each other every time they hit the ball?" Kogoro asked.
"They aren't," Ran said. "Or Sonoko isn't, anyway."
"She's saying 'glass'," Conan said, making a point to enunciate the word.
Now that he know to listen for it, Kogoro could hear the difference.
"Glass!" Sonoko yelled as she hit the ball to Amuro.
"Grass!" Amuro replied as he sent the ball back.
"Do I want to know?"
"It's not really anything major," Ran said. "The two of them got to talking about Minerva Glass and her Wimbledon match."
"Then Sonoko-neechan called her the 'Glass Court Queen'," Conan said, again enunciating the word.
"Instead of 'Grass Court'." Kogoro nodded. He was getting a sense for it now. "Amuro-kun corrected her, she got huffy, and all tennis broke loose."
"Glass!"
"Grass!"
"Close," Ran told her father. "Sonoko insisted that the nickname was 'Glass Court Queen' because it's her name and she's graceful enough to play on one without it breaking."
"Amuro-niichan tried to explain it's 'Grass Court' because that's what she actually plays on, but Sonoko-neechan didn't want to listen."
"Because that would mean acknowledging she was wrong," Kogoro said, smirking.
Ran glared at her father, then at Conan when he couldn't resist snickering at the detective's remark.
"We were going to just let them get it out of their system, then show Sonoko one of the British articles with 'Grass Court Queen' on it," Ran explained.
"That was two hours ago…" Conan said.
"That's almost enough for a Wimbledon unto itself!" Kogoro exclaimed. Given what they were doing this over, it was no wonder Ran and Conan looked bored.
"Yep," Ran and Conan said in unison.
"Glass!"
"Grass!"
"Have they said anything besides 'grass' and 'glass' since they started.
"No," both children replied together.
"You know," Kogoro said after a few glasses and grasses had passed. "It's almost hypnotic after a while."
He sat down to watch with Ran and Conan.
Ultimately, Toru Amuro emerged victorious and Sonoko Suzuki was forced to admit that Minerva Glass was the "Grass Court Queen'".
However, she insisted to the bitter end that "Glass Court Queen" sounded better.
"You know what," Amuro said after some consideration, "I think I can agree with that."
The two once bitter rivals shook hands in mutual respect, and, like in so many manga before and since, the argument was settled on athletic merit.
All that remained was to wake up the Mouris so Sonoko could get a ride home.
I apologize for the lack of actual interaction between Sonoko and Amuro, but the idea struck my love of wordplay.
