Prompt: Ai becomes a vegetarian/vegan.
The Agasa household had become the stage for a battle of wills. That was the impression Subaru Okiya had been left with as he watched the Professor Hiroshi Agasa and Ai Haibara trying very hard to simultaneously not be rude to him while not giving in to the other.
Subaru had come to visit, presenting a recently cooked meal as he often did. The moment the Professor realized what Subaru had brought, his mouth began to water. Ai seemed interested too, but her self control was far more formidable. Subaru had not been sure what the reactions were for until Ai stopped the Professor from getting dishes and an argument started.
From the living room, Subaru had to strain to hear the conversation that was happening in the kitchen. Ai was keeping her voice low to avoid being rude and the Professor was following suit. That didn't stop Subaru from gleaning bits and pieces, however, and he was surprised at what sounded like the Professor arguing with his charge.
From what Subaru could overhear, it sounded as though something had changed at some point between Subaru's last visit and now. Whatever the change was, the Professor did not seem to appreciate it. Subaru had never heard the Professor use an argumentative tone when speaking to his charge, but it was clear even if Subaru couldn't hear the words.
That was strange to be sure. From what Subaru had observed since he'd come to know the pair, the princess ruled the castle and the professor was content to let her. The only thing Subaru saw Agasa resist was Ai's insistence he take up a healthier diet. Even then, even as he snuck off to burger joints when he thought he could get away with it, the Professor never actually complained.
"Oh, it's fine, Subaru-kun," the Professor had said when Subaru had brought it up. "Ai-kun isn't the type to express herself easily. Keeping me healthy is just her way of showing she cares."
Subaru had understood. He'd learned, back when he'd been Dai Moroboshi, that Shiho Miyano vastly preferred a controlled environment. Especially when she could be the one in control. When he had begun dating her sister Akemi, Shiho has gone so far as to call him a "contaminant" in the relationship she had with her older sibling. Enforcing good health in someone she cared about, whether they liked it or not, was absolutely something he could imagine her doing. Because Professor Agasa understood this, as well, her day-to-day life with the Professor was typically without friction.
Until now, it seemed.
The Professor and the Princess now sat silently in the living room, their argument concluded. Eventually, Ai spoke up.
"Subaru-san," Ai began and bowed her head. "Thank you for bringing us a meal as you often do. I apologize for our behavior, but your choice of dish in this case created something of a dilemma."
"Oh?" Subaru asked, tilting his head in curiosities.
"Ai-kun has always been health conscious," Professor Agasa said. "So, over this past week, she had insisted that we try being a vegetarian household."
"I see." Subaru looked at the pot he'd come in with. "I suppose that makes the beef stew I brought just a tad problematic."
"Not at all," Ai said. "After some… discussion," Ai shot the Professor a sideways look. "We decided it would be a shame to waste the food you've generously provided. It also wouldn't be good manners to make yourself cook based on our wants," the Professor scoffed, earning another look. "so we decided on a compromise."
"We'll make exceptions if you have anything you'd like to share," the Professor said. "It will be our cheat, I suppose. Do you can keep trying to improve your cooking with any dishes you want to create."
Subaru smiled.
"I'm glad to hear that," he said. "I confess vegetarian fare has never appealed to me." He tried not to grin. "I wouldn't mind experimenting a little, however-"
"No, no," the Professor said quickly. "It's perfectly fine for you to cook whatever you want."
Subaru looked to Ai. The Princess seemed to sense he was teasing them, but said nothing. Either she was willing to cheat to or her latest dietary demand had been a step too far and the Professor had put his foot down.
Either way, Subaru Okiya realized he was going to have to start practicing his meat dishes for the immediate future.
