This won't, initially, be the whole story. I mostly just wanted to have something posted on the deadline date to show that I was at least working on something. Whether or not it disqualifies me from the contest seems like it'll be a moot point, but I wanted to post what I have regardless. I'm still getting some tweaking in so, for now, I'm just going to post the initial portion that pretty much tells you exactly what this AU is, then go into the rest of it.
Title: Miss Maple

The girl stumbled through the streets. She had no destination. None beyond "as far from where she had been as possible". The rainy weather and the late hour meant the streets were less crowded than they might have been. What people were present were more preoccupied with getting to where they were going and out of the rain as soon as they could. Nobody was inclined to pay much attention to the little girl in oversized clothing or, if they were, she herself was too exhausted to notice.
Every step was a struggle. Pain shot through her legs every time her feet, left bare when the shoes that no longer fit were discarded, touched the pavement. She was afraid to actually look at them; between the wet and muddy city streets and the sheer distance she'd covered in her desperation, she knew the sight would be horrible. The situation was not helped by the fact the clothes she had were now several sizes too large and heavier after being soaking wet. If she didn't drop from exhaustion she knew some loose fold of overlarge clothing would cause her to trip. Either way, the moment she fell would be the end. She had burned through the adrenaline rush long ago and was running on pure inertia at this point. If she fell now, she would not get up again.
At some point, the girl found herself in a residential area. On either side of her were fences and walls, nameplates proclaiming the family names of the residents within. She could make out lights in the houses, but none were paying attention to anything outside.
She didn't hear the door that opened behind her, nor the gate right after it. She was trudging along still, and stopped only when she heard the man's voice call out behind her.
"Hey, wait!"
She stopped. She turned her head and saw a man standing in the rain, umbrella in hand.
"Are you hurt?" he asked. "Where did you come from?"
She didn't answer as he approached. She couldn't. She had stopped. Her momentum had halted, and with it any ability to continue forward. Her legs gave out at last and she collapsed in a heap at her would be savior's feet.
The last sounds she heard before everything went black were his cries of distress.
Shiho Miyano awoke, but did not open her eyes yet. She was afraid to.
What if it was all just a dream? she wondered. What if I'm still handcuffed to that pipe?
With that thought she realized if she was still cuffed to the pipe, she would be a lot less comfortable. She wasn't sitting on a floor, her hand secured to the nearest solid object. She was laying down on something soft, her head slightly elevated.
Bed, she thought. And a pillow.
Maybe the handcuffs were the dream... she pondered. If they were, then the first thing Shiho was going to do was get up, call Akemi, and-
"Good morning," said a voice.
Shiho's thoughts ground to a halt. That was a man's voice. The same voice from the night before. She opened her eyes and looked up at a giant of a man.
No, Shiho thought. He's not giant. I've become small.
The previous night's events flooded back to the forefront of her mind. Taking her fatal drug, not dying as she had expected, and instead becoming small enough to be able to flee into the night leaving behind empty pairs of handcuffs and shoes, neither of which now fit. She blinked away tears and clutched the blankets around her tight.
"Hey, now, it's okay," the man said. "I'm not going to hurt you. I promise."
His tone was gentle. Of course it was. As far as he knew he was simply reassuring a scared little girl.
"My name is Shinichi Kudo," the young man said. "What's yours?"
