Title: Helpless
Author: Ran-dezvous
Fandom: Detective Conan
Characters: Mouri Ran and Haibara Ai
Word Count: 698
Prompt: When a limb falls asleep at the most inconvenient time.
Rating: K+/PG
Genres: Tragedy, General
Original Publish Date: January 29, 2018 (because time zones)
Disclaimer: Aoyama Gosho owns the rights to Detective Conan, but he's cool with fans writing fanfiction, yay!
Notes: Another fic inspired by the prompt I got for Prompt Exchange #13. It can stand on its own, but it can also be a prologue toward a much-bigger Halloween Party canon-divergence AU. I don't know if I'll ever actually work on it, but the possibility is certainly there. Like the previous fic, I wasn't able to polish this due to health issues, sorry about that. And to my prompter, I'm really sorry if this isn't your cup of tea; my mind just went to a very dark place.
Summary: Ran witnesses the death of Haibara Ai. Warning for character death, obviously.
For Mouri Ran, saving lives was second nature. No, she wasn't a superheroine with a secret life of fighting crime, but, if someone's life was in peril, she would do whatever it takes to save them, oftentimes not thinking of the danger that came with it.
Tonight was no exception, either. The moment she started hearing gunshots, she instinctively partially lifted open the door of the trunk she was hiding in. She peered outside, and saw Ai-chan in the distance. Oh, no! What's Ai-chan doing here? thought the teenager. Another gunshot, and Ran fully opened the trunk, ready to jump out and rush to save the little girl, except . . .
Her legs. She could not feel them. At all. She had been in that trunk for far too long.
"No, not now!" Ran let out a desperate cry, as she tried to move her right leg, but to no avail. She couldn't afford the luxury of waiting for her legs to regain their feeling, not at such a crucial moment, but what could she do? Even if she could leave her hiding place, there was no way she could run at all! She could only drag her legs, at best.
Faced with an onslaught of bullets, it was a horrible idea.
The numbness in her legs soon grew into a sharp, stinging sensation. The physical pain was nothing, however, to the emotional distress she felt about her absolute helplessness. Tears came into her eyes as Ai-chan was showered with bullets from every direction. Fortunately, none of her vital organs was hit, although she sustained many wounds all over her body. The blood dripping out of them perfectly matched the red cape she was wearing, and the tears that formed around Ran's eyes earlier started to fall uncontrollably. The pain in her legs may have become milder, however, the ache in her chest worsened.
She could probably already run in this condition, right? As long as she didn't pay too much attention to the electricity in her legs, she could be able to sprint toward Ai-chan and save her. . . . No, she must. She could never forgive herself if something were to happen to her.
She was going to do this.
Wiping her eyes, she was about to jump out of the trunk, when a loud bang! echoed through the air, her target collapsing on the asphalt. No, she can't be too late! She ran toward the body.
"Move it, Angel!" She heard a firm, womanly voice exclaiming those words, a blonde foreigner clad in purple she'd passed by moments earlier. Was that woman responsible for what happened to Ai-chan? She didn't know, but she'll figure that out later. What's important was Ai-chan.
She finally ŕeached her destination. Her little friend lied on the floor, breathing heavily. Her eyes were only half open, while her hand clutched a profusely bleeding abdomen. Ran couldn't help but be teary at the sight.
As she whipped out her phone to call an ambulance, Ai-chan spoke, in between labored breaths, "Sis."
"I-I'm not your sister, Ai-chan!" She said as she placed her hand on her chest, "It's me, Ran!" She has a sister?
"I thought I was never going to see you again," the little girl continued, despite her shortness of breath. "I've missed you so much."
Ran didn't understand what was going on; all she knew was that she had to act quickly. "Hold on, Ai-chan! I'm going to call an ambulance, okay?" she said, hurriedly dialing emergency.
"We can finally be together again. . . ."
"Ai-chan, don't say such things!"
"Together with Mom and Dad. . . ."
"Ai-chan!"
The little girl slowly closed her eyes, a peaceful smile on her face.
"No!" Ran shrieked, dropping her phone with a loud clang! on the ground, as she shook the lifeless body, pulling it close to her. "Wake up, Ai-chan!" Tears began streaming down her face, burying it with her hands, as she wailed. It was her fault, it was all her fault. If only she had acted earlier, she could've saved her. "Wake up!"
Alas, there was no response, and there never will be. All she could do now was cry the night away, until the police arrived.
