A/N: First off, sorry I'll be late finishing this. I'm having one hell of a time arguing with myself. In the end, I still angsted my way through this prompt. Second, this is only a part of it, and I'm really really sorry. I wanted to give you what you want doctorpeggy , and I'm doing my best to deliver. Enjoy part 1, though.
Also, I know this is unfair to everyone who submitted on time. I have no excuse, but I do have an explanation... Words fail me lately, and colors don't seem as friendly as they were before. In simpler terms, I'm clinically depressed. Yet here I am, trying and failing and trying again to string words together. It might not be as good as my other works, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless...
(Working) Title: Much Like The Wizard
Prompt: A Christmas KID heist with at least one pair of characters who have not met in canon pairing
Notes: Takes place two years after canon timeline. Contains established friendship between Kaito and Sera, established KaiAo. Possible HakuSera.
Summary: to follow
Part 1: Spotlight
She stood by the edge of Haido City Hotel rooftop, a pale white lily on one hand, as the silhouette of a giant white bird flew off over the city skyline.
She lets go of the breath she didn’t know she was holding, its warmth gone in seconds, to be replaced immediately by mere icy mist, cold and unforgiving.
Staring blankly to the distance, she recalled the night’s events…
It was Christmas Eve, and unlike her peers spending the holiday with their special other, Sera Masumi squeezed her way through a throng of KID fans, met with her Chemistry Class partner in the university and his friends—the KID Capture Brigade—and got in with their plot to capture the white-clad thief… only for one reason.
For months on end, ever since university started, or rather, ever since she met the enigmatic magician, she couldn’t help but find the boy a mystery. In the first few days, she dismissed it as a false alarm, that maybe it’s because he simply had the uncanny resemblance to The Wizard she used to admire so much.
Days turn to weeks, and weeks to months. But even after countless hours of brainstorming and lunch dates and arcade escapades—heck, even spending time as some sort of third wheel with Kuroba Kaito and his girlfriend, Nakamori Aoko—she still couldn’t shake the feeling there’s something that makes this guy “like The Wizard.”
Come to think of it, during their first days as lab partners, he seemed… distant, almost as if he was trying to get away from her, like one desperately keeping a life-or-death type of secret.
Most like The Wizard’s secret.
Much like The Wizard, himself…
After a few more rendezvous with Kuroba-kun, the female detective finally got a lead in the form of the inspector’s daughter (who, oddly enough, reminds her of Ran-chan) and the KID Capture Brigade.
She was lucky enough to be invited to their meetings a couple of times, both instances during a KID heist, and both instances, she, the British detective, Hakuba Saguru, their enticing lady friend, Koizumi Akako, and Aoko were all left scrambling about, knocked unconscious, or trapped in Inspector Nakamori’s own security system. Both instances, Sera noticed, the magician would disappear midway without a trace, only to reappear after, with the jewel in hand, or trapped in a room he could clearly get himself out of in seconds.
Sera sees this not as a coincidence, but a sabotage. Both times, she could have captured the phantom, herself, or Hakuba could have intercepted as easily, or Akako could have seduced him, or Aoko could have beaten him to a pulp, or Kaito could have outwitted his fellow magician with witty magic of his own.
Could it be possible for Kuroba Kaito to be the Phantom Thief KID?
There was something going on right under her nose, and the fact that she still doesn’t know what it is frustrates her to no end.
Which brings her to Haido City Hotel this Christmas Eve…
Ran-chan and Sonoko-chan are both out with their lovers, spending Christmas the way her peers are supposed to. This gives the female detective the freedom to celebrate the holidays however she chooses.
Like before, she met with the inspector, then with Aoko-chan and the others. Within minutes, she already knew the plan inside and out. Every now and then, she’d throw off-handed hints of her suspicions. Her prime suspect would simply reply in kind, sometimes with sarcasm, most times with flirty jokes (like he always throws her). In which case, he’d receive an elbow to the ribs from Aoko.
She’d let out a chuckle or two before stealing a glance at her other companions. Hakuba-kun displays the same knowing smug he always did. Akako-chan, on the other hand, would whisper warnings when she thought she’s out of Sera’s earshot.
They know something, the female detective noted.
It was then that the power was cut off. Instinctively, Sera sought for a pair of spiky, brown mess, one beside the other, but only found one.
Kaito blended into the darkness out of everyone’s vantage points. When Sera found him again, he was a different person—a graceful white ghost landing soundlessly on top of the display case where tonight’s targeted jewel is kept, a single beam of light pointed at him.
The wide-brimmed hat might have obscured most of KID’s features… but that smirk was unmistakable. It burned with familiarity, ached with longing, with the hope that maybe, just maybe, she was wrong…
Maybe her good friend is doing this against his will, or maybe he’s a victim of circumstance.
For what purpose, exactly, is Kuroba Kaito doing all this?
TBC
A/N: I'll finish this, promise. Happy Holidays! (Can't exactly say the same thing to myself, but it is what it is.). I'll incorporate fluff for part 2 as much as I can. (Darn, it's cold...)
