Prompt: Kaito is picking up a KID related package from Professor Agasa when Shinichi (or Conan, either works) walks in. The resulting chaos and a 'broken' invention lead to clones and a face off.
Gah, I apologize for how late this is-! I was going to try and finish it up before posting it last night, but obviously neither of those things happened. This is the first 900~1000 words of what's shaping up to be a 2k-3k fic, and I really apologize to the prompter for not managing to incorporate all of the prompt into what I have right now (but by the end, everything should be in place).
I hope you like however much of it I have, though!

DOUBLE DOUBLE TROUBLE (WORKING )
“Kaito, what are you-”
“Aoko, shut up for a minute, I’m thinking-”
“If you don’t give up now, KID, I’m going to have to shoot.”
“If you wouldn’t mind giving a master criminal a moment of silence before you pull the trigger, detective-!”
Stuck on a rooftop with his best friend-slash-partner in crime, three cats and the Detective of the East wasn’t where Kaito envisioned his Saturday night ending up. Things hadn’t meant to escalate so quickly, and Kaito didn’t know exactly where- no, that was a lie, he knew exactly where things had gone wrong. It had all started with one Kudo Shinichi.
Three months ago, if you had told Kaito that his best friend - the only anti-KID fangirl in all of Japan, probably - would end up being his closest confidante, closer than even Jii-chan, then he’d laugh in your face. And yet Aoko was the one who had managed to worm her way into being the best sidekick-slash-girlfriend that Kaito ever had, and probably would ever have considering the fact that girlfriends were hard to come by, and sidekicks even more so.
In fact, it was because of Aoko that Kaito’s latest heist was being set into motion, and he probably owed her several dates just to make up for it. A literal cloning technique, something that required two able-bodied people to pull off. Jii was getting old, god bless his soul, and Kaito would have really prefered somebody closer to his body type anyways, which meant Aoko was the perfect candidate.
(It also meant Kaito earned a punch to the gut for implying that Aoko was flat-chested enough to pull it off, but that was something he would never admit he deserved.)
That also meant, however, that the (newly formed) duo needed a gadget that could make it seem as though Aoko, or the second KID, appeared out of thin air, and as such they were making a pitstop in a neighborhood Kaito had learned to avoid. Jii himself had given them the address- he was out of the country at the moment, or else he’d have picked it up himself. Still, Kaito wasn’t too worried about it, and if he were to be honest, he had always wondered what Jii’s inventor friend was like.
“Aoko, watch the bike,” were his first words after pulling up to the curb. Aoko wasn’t too happy about that, however, and said just as much.
“Mou, Aoko’s not a child, you know. You always keep me out of the loop with your phantom thief stuff, even when I’m part of it!”
He just raised an eyebrow at her. “What are you talking about? I really do need you to watch the bike. You see that house over there?” He jerked his head over to the house next door, although house was putting it lightly. It was more like a mansion, and Kaito had to begrudgingly accept the fact that his own home would never live up to it. “That’s Kudo’s place, and I’d really like it if we could make a quick getaway if he showed up.”
Aoko hesitated a moment before nodding. “Fine, but if anything happens in there, Aoko’s not going to help you.”
“Thank you!” He snickered before messing up her hair and dismounting the motorcycle, strolling towards the front door before Aoko could complain. Granted, it didn’t look like the front door was used much, considering the half-fixed hole in the side of the wall, but it was probably rude to enter without knocking somewhere.
It didn’t seem as though Kaito even needed to knock, however, because the door swung open just as he was raising his fist, releasing a cloud of smoke right into his face. A figure came barreling at him, and Kaito sidestepped as, out of the thick black smoke ran an old man, coughing up a storm. “Uh.....Agasa-hakase, right? Are you-”
“I’m fine, I’m fine!” The old man popped up as soon as Kaito asked, grinning brightly. “Just finishing up a new experiment- oh! Are you Kuroba-kun? Kounosuke-kun said you were coming today!” Kaito nodded awkwardly, already off-put by Agasa’s eccentricities. Agasa shuffled him into the house without any other words and sat him down at a table before rifling through what looked like a pile of wiring and metal. “You’re going to love this invention! I wanted to test it on Shinichi-kun, but he said no-”
“Wait, you know Kudo Shinichi?” And was apparently close enough to call him Shinichi-kun, of all things- Kaito should have known, but he still paled at the thought. He had trusted Jii to not cavort with an enemy, and while Agasa wasn’t necessarily an enemy, he was closely associated with one of the most aggravating detectives known to mankind. “I, uh, actually have a-”
“Found it!” It looked like nothing more than a remote control with a button in the middle, but Agasa seemed excited as he thrusted it into Kaito’s hand. “When you press the button, it should emit an electromagnetic field that negates the-”
“Yeah, uh, cool, but I need to get going-” Kaito’s voice raised a bit, suddenly feeling uneasy. However, bad luck didn’t just come in ones, and a familiar voice came from the already-open front door, one that Kaito really didn’t want to hear.
“Really? You look just like Ran, though. I would’ve sworn.....”
“I don’t know anybody named Ran! It’s just a coincidence, Aoko guesses!” There was a brief flash of panic before Kaito composed himself, trying to once again focus on his conversation with Agasa.
“Right, uh, I think that’s my cue to leave, so-!”
