Prompt: Conan has a bad hair day.
(There was only one way this prompt seemed to go for me, so writing it was pretty straightforward. Anyway, I hope it was what my prompter wanted. I sure enjoyed writing it!)
Word count: 1256
Summary: Shinichi wished he had known more about hair, until he didn't. And everything was going wrong, until it wasn't. And all the while, Shinichi's hair was defying gravity.
Cowlicks, Haircuts and Other Surprises
At first, Shinichi wasn’t too bothered by what he saw in the mirror. There were a few extra cowlicks, some frizzy bits and a couple of tangled clumps, but nothing he couldn’t fix. He picked up his plastic hairbrush, and made an attempt to tame the mess on his head. He managed, after a fifteen minute struggle (so maybe his hair wasn’t being quite as cooperative as he had though it would be), to finally get it to look pretty close to what it usually did. Well, maybe pretty close was a bit strong, but it was somewhat in its normal state. Almost.
He reminded himself that he had at least gotten all the tangles out, and that was something, but the longer he looked into the mirror, the more cowlicks started to pop up, new and old ones alike.
Ah, he’d just have to wash his hair. No big deal.
And so he went through his morning bathroom routine with his hair at the back of his mind, and then stepped out get his clothes and towel.
He met Ran on his way to the laundry room.
“Conan-kun, your hair!”
“I know. It’ll be fine after I wash it, Ran-neechan.”
“You can’t wash it, you washed it last night. It’s the winter, if you keep wetting it, you’ll catch a cold! And hold on, did you dry your hair before going to bed last night, Conan-kun? I didn’t hear you using the hair dryer, and look at how it’s sticking up now!”
Shinichi fought the urge to groan. Why was this woman such an excellent detective only when it suited her?
Though, at least her deduction explained the current state of his hair. He had never slept with wet hair before, so he hadn’t anticipated that it would become such a mess in the morning.
Well, there was no fixing it now.
“Conan-kun, don’t you think your hair is getting a bit long?”
Shinichi felt a chill run down his spine. If Ran saw him without his glasses, and with all the bangs off his face, then she was sure to recognize him. And then he was sure to die.
“N-no, not at all. I mean, how could it be getting long? That is to say, it can’t possibly be that much longer and, I mean, why can’t I grow it in, right?”
Ran frowned.
“Conan-kun, are you scared of getting a haircut?”
Shinichi saw his way out.
"I... well, maybe a little bit.”
“It’s okay, you can admit that you’re scared. And don’t worry, you won’t get hurt when your hair is getting cut. I’ll stand right there and make sure nothing goes wrong. Will you get it cut if I do that?”
Damn older sister arguments.
“Um… I still think I should grow it out. Just, you know, because I might need a change in style, and, um, you know, all that.”
“Okay, how about I get a haircut along with you? Will that make you feel better?”
“No.”
“Conan-kun, don’t be difficult. A brave little boy like you shouldn’t be afraid of something like a haircut.”
Shinichi was determined to be difficult.
“Ran-neechan, but I don’t have to get it cut now, do I? I could wait a month or so.”
“As your temporary caretaker, I insist on you being presentable at all times. I don’t know why I didn’t think of getting your hair cut sooner.”
“But it won’t be this messy tomorrow, it’s just today that it's so weird. Pleeeease?” “Honestly, I can’t understand why you’re so adamant about this.”
And then, much to Shinichi’s relief, the doorbell rang. While Ran went to open the door, Shinichi escaped back into the bathroom. So the washing hair idea was out. No problem, he’d just live with this nest for the day, and wash it tomorrow. All he had to do was keep Ran from giving him a haircut before he managed to get his mane back in control.
Shinichi was starting to wish he had at least dampened his hair a little bit in the shower. He did not appreciate a elementary school class teacher trying to flatten his cowlicks. Especially not in front of a class full of little kids. As if the fiasco that morning hadn’t been enough.
After ten futile minutes of hair flattening, Shinichi was sent back to his seat.
“Nice hairdo.” Haibara commented from next to him.
“Real funny.” Shinichi retorted.
“In all seriousness, though, Kudo-kun, couldn’t keeping this hairstyle help protect your identity better? You’re on the brink of being found out as it is, and you’ve got to agree that it suits your personality much better.”
“Haibara, I swear if you make one more joke about my hair…”
“Haibara-san, Edogawa-kun, is there a problem?” “Sorry, Kobayashi-sensei.”
Shinichi shot one last glare at the girl, and then tried to focus on his boring little-kid math sums. He would have to deal with the hair problem later.
Shinichi would have thought that a KID heist at least, would let him stop thinking about his terrible hair situation. No such luck. Hakuba Saguru and a girl with an uncanny resemblance to Ran had both been staring at him since the start of the heist. And while the girl just looked at him in delighted surprise, Hakuba’s gaze was a bit too hostile for comfort.
Three minutes to the start of the heist, the pair approached him.
“So, you’re Edogawa Conan?” asked the girl.
Shinichi nodded.
“I’m Nakamori Aoko. I saw you looking at me, and I promise I wasn't staring at you on purpose. You just look so much like one of my friends did when we were kids. I mean, without the glasses, you’d look exactly like him, and you hair matches, too.”
Nakamori… so the keibu’s daughter? And a friend of hers had looked like him in said friend’s childhood days. Just perfect.
“Yes, don’t know how Kuroba-kun looked as a child, but the similarities to him even now are striking. Although, is there a reason you’re sporting a bedhead, Edogawa-kun?” Hakuba added. Shinichi fought the urge to strangle the detective. Not that he had the physical strength to do it.
“Speaking of Kaito, where is he? He was here just moments ago, and then he went to the bathroom or something.”
“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!”
“Ugh, and stupid KID just showed up. BaKaito always comes to look at KID, and he always misses the performance.”
Shinichi froze. What had she just said?
The cogs in Shinichi’s brain started to turn. This Kaito guy had a striking resemblance to him. KID could dress up as Kudo Shinichi without a mask. Kuroba Kaito had gone to the bathroom and had not returned. KID had just made an entrance. And, it sounded like Kuroba never seemed to be in the same place as KID at the same time.
A grin spread across Shinichi’s face. Oh, he was going to have so much fun in all the heists to come. Ideas of torture and blackmail came to Shinichi’s mind. All, benign, of course. well, except maybe some, but that would be KID’s problem, not Shinichi’s.
He would never actually tell the police what he had found out, KID was too morally upright a criminal to be put in jail, but KID, as in, Kuroba Kaito didn’t need to know that.
So maybe there were upsides to this bad hair day that Shinichi hadn’t anticipated.
