Super Short Contest #24
(I really enjoy writing dialogue-only stories for some reason, so I ended up with this fic. I don't think it turned out quite like I had intended it to, but nothing ever does anyway.)
Word count: 812
Summary: He had told her he would come back to get his scarf, but she didn't know when or how.
Borrowing and Returning
“I’ll miss you Conan-kun!”
“We’ll see each other again, Ran-neechan.”
“I know, it’s just that… I’ve g-gotten so used to you being around, and, w-well, your parents just said that you’re going to move away for good, and that you may not be v-visiting anytime soon. I’m sorry. I am happy that you can finally go live with your parents, but I can’t imagine n-not living with you anymore. I love you.”
“It’s alright. I…I love you too. And I know that we’ll see each other soon.”
“Conan-kun, you’re so sweet, b-but it’s okay if we don’t see each other. We’ll keep in touch, w-won’t we?”
“Are you feeling cold?”
“A little. My scarf got ripped the other day, remember? I don’t have a spare one.”
“Here. You can give it back to me when we see each other again.” “I can’t take your scarf. Who knows when I’ll be able to return it.”
“I’ll come back to get it from you. Promise. Till then, keep it safe for me. And use it, I don’t want you to fall sick, Ran-neechan.”
“But—”
“Oh, I need to go now Ran-neechan. Bye!”
“Bye.”
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
“Hey Sonoko! Sorry I’m late.”
“Where’d you get that scarf? It looks kind of familiar.”
“Oh, this? Conan-kun gave it to me. I should by a new one for myself, though, I don’t want to end up ruining his.”
“Wait, didn’t Shinichi-kun have a scarf like that?”
“He did? I’ve always seen him wearing a grey one.”
“No, remember that time his parents visited, and he was wearing a red and green Christmas scarf for couple of days because his mother made him or something? He kept grumbling about it. Anyway, it looked exactly like this one.”
“I’m sure there are plenty of scarves like the one I’m wearing.”’
“Do you dare doubt my expertise in identifying clothes?”
“Uh…”
“I can tell which store a person has bought their clothes from on sight.”
“Whatever you say.”
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
“Shinichi! When did you come back from your case? Come inside, you’re shivering.”
“Yo, R-Ran.”
“Is that all you have to say after being away for so long? I bet you’ll just leave in an hour or so anyway.”
“N-no, I’m b-back for good this time.”
“Sit down, I’ll make you a cup of tea. And sit next to the heater.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Here, drink it while it’s hot.”
“Thanks.”
“What were you doing out i this blizzard anyway? And without a scarf, too.”
“About that... I actually came to get my scarf.”
“I don’t have your scarf.”
“Yeah you do, I gave it to you when I left, and promised you I’d come to get it back.”
“What?”
“I said—”
“No, I mean… never mind, it must be coincidence. Or maybe you’re making a mistake.”
“No, really. I remember very clearly, I gave you my scarf because you were feeling cold and told you I’d come to take it later. And I told you to use it, too. And then I left.”
“Shinichi?”
“Yeah?”
“I'm in a dream, right?”
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
“Hattori-kun? What are you doing in Tokyo?”
“Oh, I came to visit. Kazuha’s gone to this aikido summer program, though. Didn’t think you’d be at Co-Co-Kudo’s place.”
“Ran? Where are you?”
“I’m at the front door. The doorbell rang when you went to get your case files from the library.”
“Wait, can’t he hear the doorbell in the… and what the hell, he has a personal library?”
“Yeah, and it’s soundproof.”
“Hey, who is—oh, hey Hattori!”
“Co-Co-Co-Kudo!”
“Are you ever going to get my name right?”
“Oh!”
“What is it, Ran?”
“So that’s why Hattori-kun kept messing up Conan-kun’s name!”
“Um, is she supposed to know that?”
“Yep. Told her when I came back. As myself, I mean.”
“And when was that?”
“January.”
“You came back six months ago and you didn’t tell me!”
“I forget things sometimes.”
“Says the guy who can recall the minute details of every crime scene he’s ever been to! Speaking of January, I have the scarf I borrowed from you back then.”
“Another scarf? What about the red and green one?”
“The one I gave to Hattori is the one that I usually used to wear. The grey one, remember?”
“Am I supposed to know about this red and green scarf? Because it you’re making it sound important.”
“No, there is no need for anyone to know about that scarf.”
“Shinichi is just saying that because the entire event evolving it was incredibly embarrassing for him.”
“So, then what was it for you?”
“I can answer that. The most fun she’s ever had beating someone up.”
“I didn’t beat you up, I only almost beat you up.”
“Okay… I don’t want to know.”
