Prompt: Miwako Sato is working behind a desk... and hating every minute of it.
Title: Counting the Seconds, the Minutes, the Hours
Word Count: 591
A/N: I feel kind of bad about how short this turned out, but I really don’t have a good feel for Satou’s character. Hopefully this is sufficient to fulfill the prompter’s request. If not let me know and I’ll take another crack at it.

Miwako Satou was losing her mind. Time had all but come to a standstill as she glanced furtively at the clock on the wall. Desk work was… terrible. And she still had hours left of her shift.
Make no mistake, she tolerated paperwork. It was a necessary evil. However, being stuck on desk duty because she had sprained her ankle... was just evil. And it was all Wataru Takagi’s fault. What was he thinking leaving rose petals in the entry way? Especially after he had polished the floors the day before. And then rushing to ‘help’ when he heard her fall…
Miwako sighed. She liked Wataru, but she couldn’t help but feel he had been trying too hard since she had agreed to start going out with him. She didn’t understand why he felt like he had to prove himself. She liked him just the way he was, awkward moments and all.
But it was still his fault she was stuck on desk duty for the next… Ughhh. Miwako’s head dropped to the desk in front of her. She still had 4 hours, 11 minutes, and 34 seconds of her shift left. Then her ankle wrap would come off and she would be allowed back in the field tomorrow.
Until then… Miwako glared at the stack of cold case files stacked on her desk. Where were the Detective Boys when you needed them? Not that she should share police files with 7 year olds, but if there was new information to be gleaned from the files, Conan Edogawa would find it. Or maybe that was just Miwako’s impatience. She had been through 6 files already and had nothing to show for it. The killers that tried to be crafty seemed to be easier to find that the ones that just walked into a room with gloves and a ski mask and stabbed someone to death.
Miwako leaned back in her chair, staring up at the ceiling. If she was being honest with herself, she’d probably get caught if she ever tried to murder someone. As a police officer she knew all about investigative methods and how the forensic teams worked, but somehow none of that seemed to matter whenever the police force brought in consultants. Kogoro Mouri in particular. It was just unfair that the man could solve crimes in his sleep.
Though, if Miwako was going to murder someone, for example the reason she was stuck at a desk for the next 4 hours, 7 minutes, and 57 seconds… She should really stock up on supplies ahead of time. The gloves and ski mask would of course have to be purchased during the winter and she would have to go skiing at least once to justify buying them. Fishing line had a tendency to come in handy too and that could be purchased during the summer. Or she could use jewelers wire in a pinch since there wasn’t really a season for arts and crafts.
It would all depend on the time table. But it shouldn’t be too hard to gather all of the supplies in a timely fashion. After all, she would need to wait long enough that her motive would be unclear. At least 8 months.
“Satou?” Inspector Megure questioned as he came to a stop in front of her desk. He was frowning.
“Yes. At least 8 months. Otherwise I’d be at the top of the list of suspects. Right, Megure-keibu?”
“Right…” The inspector muttered before turning to survey the room. “Takagi!”

Totally off topic A/N: I haven’t really been around long enough to have a feel for the way things are done on this site. I sort of just dove in and started writing. (Not just on this site either. I went from discovering fan fiction was a real thing to writing my own inside of like a week and a half.) Is there any… umm… etiquette I should be aware of? I ask because I posted my last contest entry early but it looks like everyone else waited till the last day. I’ve really only written for myself up until this point so I post things when I think they’re done and this piece was no exception. Should I be waiting till the deadlines or does it not matter?
