Well, I'm not completely satisfied with this fic, but I don't know if there's much that I can do about it. Maybe this idea is better in concept than actual writing . . .
I hope it's okay that I used all three optional prompts in this one. Although the "Tantei-sama" isn't a very big part. Well, I hope you enjoy this fanfic either way. De wa! *bows*
(Sidenote to self: I've really been teasing Kaito way too much recently . . .)

Heist Gone Wrong
Summary: When Conan discovers that Kaitou Kid has sent another advance notice, Haibara decides to use this to her advantage. Kaito never knew a heist could go so wrong.
“Sunday, July 19th, at precisely 12:43 am, I shall once again come, this time to take “The Returning King”. Of course, just like the slice that mars the sapphire, I shall pierce through the waters and claim my target.
Kaitou Kid”
Conan stared at the words of the advance notice in his hand intently. He had been watching the news on TV - which was how he found out about Kaitou Kid’s next heist - and soon after wrote down what the notice had said. However, there wasn’t much to be figured out. Kid had nearly stated everything in his advance notice directly, except for that little bit. “Just like the slice that mars the sapphire, I shall pierce through the waters and claim my target”. If Conan remembered, that particular sapphire had an interesting legend surrounding it.
The story went that a certain country’s king was kidnapped and supposedly killed by a neighboring rival country. Afterwards, that rival country invaded the now king-less one to take over. The helpless country fought as much as they could, but without their king, they began to lose hope and started being pushed back. However, just as they had lost all hope, their king appeared riding on the back of his black stallion, regrouped his people, and fought back. The enemy leader had on him a polished sapphire as big as his palm, and when the king was fighting with him, that sapphire had dropped to the ground. At the same time, the leader had forced the king to the ground and was about to kill him when the king picked up the sapphire, used it as a shield, and pushed the leader back. Eventually, he killed that leader and drove the invading country out, thus saving his kingdom. The sapphire was given it’s name in honor of the king who had saved his country, and the gash that the sword had made in it was still there today.
Well, that one line in the advance notice was easy for Conan to figure out. “The Returning King” was to be displayed in the middle of the museum’s fountain, so it most likely referred to crossing the fountain to get the jewel.
Conan jumped when a hand on his shoulder interrupted his thoughts. “Haibara,” he said, turning to face her.
“Well, isn’t this a good opportunity?” the shrunken scientist replied.
“For what?”
“For an advantage against Kaitou Kid,” she explained as she turned around and headed back down to the basement.
It was Friday night, and Kaito reviewed the plan in his mind for what felt like the millionth time. Then he reviewed the three backup plans he had. He was sure that nothing could go wrong during this heist. Well, most things couldn’t go wrong during this heist. It was dangerous to assume that nothing could go wrong. That’s why he had the three backup plans. Deciding that he had reviewed enough, Kaito got dressed and lay down on his bed, waiting for sleep to take over.
------------
Kaito was standing on the edge of a building in full Kid regalia, facing the moon. The wind blew throughout the clear night, got caught in Kid’s cape, and eventually freed itself, pushing the white fabric away in the process. The moonlight shone through the gem Kid held in his hands, revealing that nothing was inside. He sighed.
“Stay where you are, Kaitou Kid,” a familiar voice called from behind him.
“Why Tantei-sama,” Kid replied as he turned around, “I was wondering when you’d show up.”
The shrunken detective before him smirked as Kid tossed the recently stolen jewel to him like it was a routine. “You should really stop doing this, you know. If you’re not going to keep the gem, then what’s the point? You’ll get captured eventually.”
“I’m looking for a specific one,” Kid explained, “and none of the ones I’ve stolen have been it.”
Conan slowly raised his wrist up to eye level, his watch open and aimed. “Why are you doing this?” he asked.
“Now, now, Tantei-sama, do you really expect to hit me with your watch before I disappear?” He tilted his head to one side as the sound of the police pounding up the stairs made itself known. “Especially since time has run short.”
The door suddenly burst open, startling the chibi tantei enough to where he dropped his wrist down. Seeing his chance, Kid leaned back over the emptiness of the sky. “Ja na, Tantei-sama!” he winked.
As he fell, he opened up his hang glider and flew away from the building the heist had taken place at. He smiled as he heard the inspector’s enraged “KAITOU KID!!!” echo throughout the night . . .
------------
When Kaito woke up, the first thing he did was rub his head and think, “Tantei-sama”? Where did that come from?
The rest of the day was spent preparing for the heist. He was glad he didn’t have to make a latex mask for his disguise this time. Sure, Tantei-kun immediately knew who he was, but that didn’t mean he could do anything to tell the others about it. After all, it would expose his own identity as well, and he couldn’t risk that.
The night of the heist came sooner than Kaito wished, and he had to go early to check on what the Inspector had in store for him this time. Not to mention being disguised as a detective certainly helped in getting close and observing whatever mechanism was there. Kaito was confident he would win this one.
Kaito - dressed as Shinichi - looked over the fountain that The Returning King was placed on . . . and froze. W-w-w-w-w-what’s with all the fish?! When he had looked up the exhibit beforehand, they said nothing about there being fish in the fountain. So why were they there now?! C-calm down, Kaito, he thought queasily. Remember your poker face. One of the fish jumped out of water. He grimaced. P-poker face!
Kaito flinched when a hand touched his shoulder.
“Do you like our main security system, Kaitou Kid?” a voice said from behind him. A voice the phantom thief hadn’t expected to hear. He slowly turned around, and dreaded the sight he saw. Shinichi smirked.
----------------------
“Haibara,” Conan said.
“Well, isn’t this a good opportunity?” she replied.
“For what?”
“For an advantage against Kaitou Kid,” she explained as she turned around and headed back down to the basement.
“Wait, what do you mean?” Conan asked, chasing after her.
“I’m almost done with another prototype antidote and it needs to be tested.”
“Really?!”
“It should only work for a day, maybe less. But chasing after Kid will allow me to gather data about how well your body can move. Especially if something unexpected happens. I’ll be watching the heist, hiding. If something happens and you feel like you’ll turn back into Conan soon, hide somewhere and continue with the heist after you’ve changed. You wouldn’t want people to see you change in the middle of the heist.”
“Thank you, Haibara!”
“Remember, this is just so I can collect data. It’s not specifically for you.”
The next day, the Detective Boys were over at Professor Agasa’s house, discussing ways to prevent Kid from stealing the gem.
“If only Kid didn’t like fish like Shinichi-oniisan doesn’t,” Ayumi sighed.
“What?” Conan asked.
“Shinichi-oniisan said that he can’t handle fish,” she explained.
“When did he say that?” I’m completely fine with fish! Conan thought.
“We were chasing Kid into the forest after we fished him out of the sky,” Genta answered. “And we met Shinichi-oniichan. Later on when we were all eating our bentos, we asked if there was anything he didn’t like and he said fish.”
Conan held his chin with his hands, seemingly in deep thought. Then, suddenly, he started laughing.
“What is it?” Mitsuhiko asked.
“Nothing, nothing,” Conan replied, calming down. “It’s just that that wasn’t Shinichi-niichan at all! He’s been on a case. No, that was Kaitou Kid himself!”
“Ehhh?!” the three kids exclaimed.
“Which means,” Conan continued, more serious now, “that if what he said was true, we just found Kid’s weakness.” He smirked.
----------------------
Kaito quickly composed himself. “Oh, so you’re trying to make me look like Kaitou Kid, huh, Kid? Don’t forget, there are ways to tell the difference. If needed I can bring Ran in and have her question us.”
Shinichi raised his eyebrows. “You know that’d be suicide, right? We could also have you swim in the fountain. The Detective Boys were a great help in figuring out your weakness.”
“I’d be completely fine with that. After all, you’re the one who’s afraid of fish.”
“We could also have you two have an ice skating competition,” Hakuba said, coming in with Inspector Nakamori.
“Huh?” Shinichi asked.
“Kid can’t skate,” he explained.
“Before we do something so time-consuming, we should at least try doing this!” Inspector Nakamori said, while starting to pull on Shinichi’s face. The phantom thief next to him grimaced in sympathy.
“Itetetetete!” Shinichi moaned, glaring at the inspector and rubbing his cheeks when a mask didn’t come off.
“Which means this is the real Kid!” he stated, pointing at Kaito.
In response, Kaito brought his hands up in a calming gesture and said, “I assure you, Nakamori-keibu, I’m not wearing a mask. You can do the same thing you did to him to make sure of it.” He pointed at Shinichi and thought, I can’t believe I’m actually inviting the inspector to do this . . .
“Hmmm,” Inspector Nakamori mumbled. Well, there was always the chance Kid could be bluffing, so he took the invitation and pulled on his face, soon resulting in protesting from Kaito. However, no mask came off. After a small silence, the inspector said, “You two wouldn’t happen to be twins, would you?”
Shinichi looked at Kaito. “. . . I don’t think so.”
“Probably not,” Kaito added. Then, bracing himself, he plunged his hand into the fountain water. He gulped, put on his best poker face - which even then barely held back his ichthyophobia - and, after a few tries, somehow managed to grab one of the koi. A bead of sweat ran down his face as he said, “If I was really afraid of fish, could I do this?”
Shinichi took up the challenge and grabbed another fish out of the water. “If you can disguise completely as someone else without anybody knowing the difference, then you can pretend to be someone who isn’t afraid of fish. However,” he brought the fish closer to Kaito’s face, “a phobia is hard to hide.”
“Oh, so it’s a phobia?” the kaitou replied, hiding the nervousness in his voice. “The Detective Boys only said that you couldn’t handle fish.”
“It isn’t a very far jump to assume it’s a phobia.”
“We’re going nowhere at this rate,” Hakuba muttered.
“Well, until we figure this out . . .” Inspector Nakamori trailed off. He handcuffed Shinichi and Kaito - causing a shout of surprise from both of them - dragged the two over to the stairs to the second floor, and handcuffed them to the handrail.
“What?” Kaito asked.
Shinichi shrugged. “It only makes sense. They don’t know who’s who, even though I know you’re Kaitou Kid, and so it’s natural for them to prevent either of us from escaping.”
“Me? You’re the one who’s Kaitou Kid!”
“I think we need to get Mouri-tantei’s daughter to settle this . . .” Nakamori muttered as he started walking away.
Suddenly, Hakuba’s phone started to ring. “Moshi moshi? . . . Ah, yes Baaya . . . Yeah, I know . . . What? . . . Baaya? . . . I can’t hear you . . . Wait, just a second,” he said as he walked out of the room to get better reception.
“That’s better,” Kaito said when Hakuba left. He put away the signal blocker (causing a raising of the eyebrows by a certain detective), took out his lock-picking tools, and started working on the handcuffs.
After a few seconds, Shinichi said, “Who knew the arrogant flamboyant thief never caught by police is scared of fish?”
Kaito stopped to narrow his eyes at the detective. “Shut up.”
“What caused that anyway?”
“Like I’d tell you. Besides, you don’t want to know,” the phantom thief shook his head and turned back to working on the handcuffs. There was silence for the next few moments. Then Kaito brought his head up. “And what about you? Since when were you able to turn back into Shinichi, Tantei-kun?”
“There’s . . . a temporary antidote,” Shinichi hesitantly explained. “But it doesn’t work for very long.”
“A temporary antidote? Then why don’t you use it more often?”
“I would if someone didn’t stop me from doing it.” Kaito tilted his head in confusion, but Shinichi refused to say more.
“Ah, got it!” Kaito exclaimed as the handcuff fell off his wrist. “Sorry Tantei-kun, but I can’t help you today. Besides, Nakamori-keibu will come back with the keys. Ja na! <3” He winked and disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
“Matte, Kid!” But he was already gone. Shinichi sighed.
Kaito - now fully in his Kid outfit - was heading for the roof when he heard the police force catching up with him. “Ah, Nakamori-keibu and the others seem more energetic today,” Kaito noticed as he ran faster. And yet the sound behind him became louder as the people got closer. The phantom thief risked a quick look behind him and decided that they were way too close. He turned a corner and went into a nearby door.
Kaito let out a sigh of relief as he softly closed and locked the door. A gasp from behind caused him to whirl around . . . and see Suzuki Sonoko standing before him. Why’d it have to be her? he mentally groaned.
“Kid-sama,” Sonoko said, wonder in her voice. “What are you doing here? It’s hours before the heist! Don’t tell me you came here just to see me! Oh Kid-sama!”
Kaito resisted the urge to facepalm, but he couldn’t stop the sweatdrop. Luckily, Sonoko didn’t see it. The police started pounding on the door and the wood threatened to give way. The phantom thief quickly put on his gentlemanly acting. He took Sonoko’s hand, kissed it, and said softly, “Ojousama, time is short and I must leave. Do you know of any ways out of this room other than the door behind me?”
Sonoko nodded mutely and pointed to an open window that went into the next room. She would definitely be telling Ran about this encounter.
Kaito thanked her and fled out the door, continuing his way to the roof, which this time was rather uneventful. When he got to the top, however . . .
“You know, you really should stop heading to the roof after every single heist,” Shinichi said from the shadows. “It’s too predictable.”
Kaito turned around to face him as Shinichi walked out from the shadow of the stair enclosure. “Have you been waiting for me this whole time?” he asked.
“As soon as I got out of the handcuffs,” Shinichi answered.
“What happened with Ran?”
“Nakamori-keibu couldn’t get in contact with her. I forgot she had a karate tournament today.”
“Stay where you are!” an unfamiliar voice suddenly shouted. Both Shinichi and Kaito spun to face the direction it had come from. A man of about 40 with a brown mustache and hair that was wearing a black coat was standing near the edge of the opposite side of the roof. His eyes widened when he saw the person in front of him. “You’re supposed to be dead!” he shouted.
Shinichi immediately narrowed his eyes. Could this be . . . ? But why would They be here? Shinichi had made sure to not let anyone other than the police know that he would be involved in this heist. Did they have a mole in the police?
A woman walked out from behind the man. She had long black hair that failed to conceal small white streaks of age, as well as a black shirt with dark blue jeans and black high heels. “Ara ara,” she began. “Kaitou Kid is alive, the high school detective is alive . . . What happened to the organization that’s made them so sloppy and inept recently?”
Shinichi and Kaito exchanged glances. That organization’s going after him, too? they both thought. The two nemeses turned back to the two in black.
“What are you doing here?” Shinichi asked, a threatening tone in his voice.
“Oh, so the detective is going on the offensive, is he?”
Kaito stepped forward. “You won’t get what you want,” he stated.
“Neither could you, it seems,” she replied. Kaito refused to let his blush of embarrassment show through his poker face. The man in black whispered to the woman, but she shook her head and whispered back fiercely. However, the wind was blowing in the wrong direction, so neither Kaito nor Shinichi could hear what they were talking about.
Suddenly, the sound of a multitude of people pounding up the steps made itself known to the four on the roof.
“It seems we must go now,” the woman said. Shinichi opened his mouth to say something but was cut off when she added, “And don’t worry, I won’t reveal your secret. The organization’s trying to kill me anyway, so why would I?” She turned to Kaito. “As for you, Kaitou Kid, I’m sure you know that they’ve already found out you’re alive.” The phantom thief just nodded. “Well then, ja na,” she ended, grabbing some equipment from the ground and jumping off the building with the other person.
The two teens rushed to the edge of the roof and looked down. The two ex-organization members were rappelling down the side of the building. They better hope the police doesn’t see them . . . Kaito thought.
He turned back to Shinichi. They stared at each other in an awkward silence. However, it was suddenly broken by two sentences. “This is the organization you’re after?” Kaito exclaimed at the exact same time Shinichi said, “The Black Organization is after you, too?” However, before either could say anything else, the door to the roof burst open and a tidal wave of policemen with Inspector Nakamori in the lead flooded the roof.
“We’re talking about this later,” Kaito said to Shinichi before he jumped off the roof, his hang glider catching his fall. However, his escape was much too close and Inspector Nakamori managed to grab his glove as he fell.
“Good job, keibu!” a random policeman said. “That might have Kid’s fingerprints on it!”
“Huh? Oh!” he replied before laughing heavily. Shinichi sweatdropped.
Kaito sighed and looked at his now-bare hand as he glided down from the building. Good thing it’s the kind of glove that doesn’t keep fingerprints on it, he thought. Wait a second, I never got to see if The Returning King is Pandora or not! He sighed - it was more like a whine - and he quickly made two mental notes. One was to tell the police he wouldn’t be coming for the jewel until either next week or next month, whenever he decided. The other . . . was to find out Tantei-kun’s phone number.
Did anyone catch the reference to Detective Conan OVA 10, Kid in Trap Island? I'm pretty sure all who watched that OVA should've caught it, since it seemed kinda obvious . . .
Promise of a sequel-to-come??? Probably
Ja ne!

Probably
Ja ne!
