Hm.... The books I usually read in my language mostly use past tense. It´s easier, I believe, and gives a wider range of story-telling, since in Portuguese there are like 6-7 past tenses... Some use present, but the story becomes almost stiff. The present is usually only used in dialog, specially in plays.

I personally slide between the two if ever one or the other doesn't apply well to what I'm describing, but like everyone else I use mostly past tense. But that's me, and a few other writers/translators I guess.
Anyways, I've changed the title of the thread to make it less of a testing ground and more of an actual RP.

Yeah, I'm almost always past tense. I think I may have tried out present before, but while using it I ended up slipping back into past. It's kinda hard to keep it present until you get into the feel.
