Well, depending on where you are from, most architectural and cultural heritage of a city is beautiful too Something different from every day life is always exciting to tourists <--- so I'm in that category about Bulgaria

Hello everyone. I'm Egyptian, but I lived in Jeddah,KSA for around 10 years and only moved back to Egypt around 2 years ago. I was in an international school there and moved back to Egypt only a year before IGCSEs start, so I'm quite good with English. Haven't really spoken in it for a while though, so I'm not confident in my pronunciation, but I've been writing in it for a few years. I also know Arabic, as it's my native language, and have been self-studying Japanese for around 4 years or so. I'm probably at an intermediate level now. I tried learning some languages before like Russian (I'd say I put that one on hiatus but that's just a fancy way of saying I gave up), Spanish (hiatus again though I didn't hate it), Italian (quit. Totally quit. Might come back one day), Turkish (hiatus), Finnish (again, on hiatus), German (hiatus) and some others. I want to become a polyglot but at the rate I'm going....XD
It's more like I'm taking a look at each language. So far, I couldn't find a foreign language that appealed to me as much as Japanese did. I just love the pronunciation. And I'm not just talking about anime Japanese. I also learned some French in school and I sometimes practice it on Duolingo.
Everyone here seems to have an interesting mix of languages XD I just hop from one to another XD

Hahaha I know what you mean. There came a time when I was obsessed with languages. Had my friends obsessed with it too and we all would jump from one language to the other it was hilarious/sad. We were never committed XD
I think it's very impressive that you've managed to learn japanese all on your own. I tried it once but I think I needed a buddy so that we could do it together and motivate each other.
About the rest, well, if you've read the whole thread you'll know I'm an Egyptian too. (YAAY!!) My story is basically yours but instead of living in Jeddah, I lived in Riyadh. Much more closed off and restricted but I managed. And I've lived there since I was two weeks old so yup, my whole life.

I don't know why I had a feeling you lived in Riyadh XD A lot of Egyptians go there, so yeah. Thank you XD It's not that impressive.. To say the truth, I've been interested in learning Japanese for a while because as a kid, I used to watch Arabic dub animes on TV and I saw a lot of Kanji... I thought kanji was cool back then and always wanted to take up the challenge XD But I was back then the type of person who'd care so much about people's opinions and the common opinion seemed to be that learning Japanese is a bit weird.. I hate myself for not starting earlier XD I never actually started until seventh grade, when I got a new classmate who was an otaku, much like me, and was learning Japanese. And when I found someone else who thought the language was really cool, I got motivated and started as well. And...I think I kind of surpassed her there long back and here I am XD But she started writing because of me and surpassed me XD Wish I could seriously catch up.
Well, woah, that is indeed a long time you spent in KSA. How was it when you came back here? I went there when I was four so I didn't remember much about Egypt. I used to go there in the summer for a month or so, but that really wasn't enough for me to know that much about my country. Add to that the fact that my classmates were all from different countries so I was more used to speaking English than Arabic in school. I didn't really mix with many Saudis there either. I guess here, I felt a bit like a stranger at times but that gradually changed XD

Don't sell yourself short. Learning any language is impressive. And I wish I had that competition between another otaku. I really think that would've made all the difference for me. And yes people's opinions mattered at the time. I've been much happier since I started not caring.
Indeed it is. And I too only came her once a year for about a month to meet family and chill basically. I didn't know Egypt any deeper than that. When I came here, I was honestly depressed for a time since I've lived my whole life kinda isolated and I was flung in this society where I had to interact a lot. And people are very different here. I think I did a good job assimilating myself but still sometimes I shy from large groups. Egypt's also a bit messier. And that's putting it very kindly. But honestly though, if I had to choose which country I'll stay in it's Egypt any time of the day.
When I was in Riyadh, I stayed at a school that was predominantly Egyptians and I rarely had contact with people from different countries. It's only until recent years that diversity increased. I don't know why really that was the case. I mean there wasn't any rules excluding non-egyptians. XD Anyway because of that, I spoke in Arabic most of the time.

Thank you so much So flattered... Maybe you could give Japanese a try again though? If you fele like it, that is. And yeah, life sure becomes a lot easier when we discard such negativity from society. Yeah, it's a very kind way to put it. Egypt is in deed quite messy, even more so these days. Well, I know what you mean when you say the people are different. I kind of don't know how to explain it, but being in a kind of multicultural society, at least in school, meant that we were all connected through anything that was English, since that was what we spoke most of the time due to the language barrier. When I came here, I realized my interests clashed with those of the people here. Things I like to do, like writing in English, reading English novels, singing Japanese songs, learning Japanese and watching anime, weren't of much interest to the people here. Well, until recently at least XD I did come across some otakus and I really couldn't believe it. Maybe because the first otaku I met was like a copy of me, including the fact that she had also lived in Jeddah for a similar period of time XD But being already an introvert by nature, I didn't really know how to get into any circle, especially with the difference in interests. Until the otakus showed up, of course XD To say the truth though, Egypt is so outgoing and feels so unorganized to me. There was this peace of mind I felt in KSA that Egypt lacks a bit. Even though I do miss KSA and sometimes feel like I don't belong here because most of my memories until now were in Jeddah, I'd rather stay here. I'm a person who really hates changes XD To the point that sometimes I don't update my apps cause I like them the way they are. That's weird, yeah. But now I don't because of my full mobile storage... Oh, now I'm rambling..

I understand every single word. I think every one of us who's lived abroad but more specifically in KSA feels that way. Especially if you've been there for a long period. You get conflicted. I have a hard time choosing which country I'd like to live in if it was a choice.
Maybe I'll try it again but I don't think it will be in the near future. I haven't found a lot of otakus. Maybe a friend or too. But we're not even close.
Anyway since we hijacked this thread and I'm pretty sure we shouldn't and we're probably annoying everyone on here with the repeated notifications let's shift this chat to the PM too.
Sorry guys, we got carried away. 😬

Oh thank you XD It's not really impressive if you ask me though, Cesela. I didn't get far in any of them...save for Japanese. You could say I was curious about the different cultures and ways of speaking, so it was like hopping onto the next bus for a journey I wasn't ready for, and then getting off at the first stop.

I'm from hawaii, but I'm currently going to school in Nebraska. I'm of Japanese and korean descent but my proficiency in Japanese is like that of a toddler. Being a 4th generation american means the languages get lost :/ BUt I hope to be semi-fluent someday

Wow, I never posted in here- I'm ethnically pinoy (from the Philippines), but I currently live in TX. I've lived on the coast almost all my life, from HI to WA and now finally here in the gulf.
I know, like, rudimentary tagalog, basically just numbers, family titles and random words here and there that I get from bilingual puns, and I'm currently trying to get my mom to teach me ilocano because it just sounds a lot prettier to me. I'm semi-fluent in french, though, and can......kind of? hold up a conversation? I'm still working on that. Working on self-taught Welsh, and also (mildly off-topic) working on a fantasy language with some roots in French (grammatically) and Japanese (phonetically).

I feel kind of silly wondering about the shortenings you are using: TX, HI, WA. What countries are these?
