Okay, my idea: Crossovers. We all have series we like besides MK/DC. Wouldn't it be totally awesome if they collided?
I don't think that additional prompts are necessary with such a concept, but just in case...
* An Old Friend: One or more members of the DC/MK cast had a tie to someone from some other series all along but never mentioned it. Like, I dunno, Toichi Kuroba mentored a young Bruce Wayne in disguises or something. * First Contact: The exact opposite of the above. Their worlds have *never* met until now. Maybe they don't even live on the same planet/dimension, until a rip in the space-time continuum jammed them together. * MST3K: One of the series stays fictional. The story is about the cast of the other series giving snarky commentary on the first one.

That's okay. You can wait until you win to share. I just want people to have the ideas and prompts in mind so that we can go right away.
I think that's a really cool idea that would be fun to do, but, as stated in the contest rules, crossovers aren't allowed, so it has to be DCMK only. ^.^; I'm sorry. It was a good idea, though.

Aw, damn. I should read the rules more carefully...

Mikau, I thought the rule was no crossover "unless theme allows"? It seems like if the theme was expressly "crossovers", that would be allowed...

You know, it does say that. I was under the impression that it was no crossovers period. Might have to change the wording in the future. We are a DCMK forum so the contests really should be DCMK. I think that stems from the fact that we all know DCMK but we aren't all necessarily familiar with whatever other fandom might be used, so that makes it hard to judge the entries well.
I think it would also make the writing harder because you have to assume that your audience has no clue who the characters are from the non-DCMK fandom. You have to explain who the characters are and what situations they're in. Crossovers are great for normal purposes, but in a contest for a fandom-specific forum, I think the gymnastics you have to do to make sure that everyone has the same knowledge and understanding of the other series would make the fic awkward. I think in some cases there might be too much explaining necessary that would affect the quality of the fics.
Additionally, a factor that might affect voting is some people aren't going to be interested in investigating a new series, so some of the fics, depending on the popularity of the other series, might not be given a fair chance.
Those are some of the problems I see with doing a crossover in the contest setting. I think it would be better in this situation just to do DCMK fics for the contests.
Like I said, crossovers are a lot of fun and cool to do if you have two series that you think fit well together, but for a contest I don't think they would be the best choice.
Natsumi, Crimson, what do you two think? I would say no just because I don't think it would be best. Crimson, what were you thinking when you originally wrote the rule about crossovers?

Okay, in the event that my suggestion is disallowed, I propose this alternative theme:
"Betrayed."
Since I be a black-hearted soul, you see.

My concern reflects yours Mikau. The reason crossovers aren't typically allowed is for those reasons. Personally, I don't really follow a lot of anime, play that many video games anymore or might not know a series from a lot of forms of media. While that isn't true for everyone, I assume it's a common issue. I often find crossovers hard to invest in because I'm not familiar with a series. For example, awhile ago I had an idea for MK crossover with Cyber-6, but does anyone here know of this series? If not, how could people attempt to be objective in voting or not voting for it based on good characterization, etc? It's hard to judge if characters, settings or plot devices work with characters you aren't familiar with and even if you think everyone else should know a series, for example Batman, they're still might be those few people who don't know much about it. For example just the other day I saw someone in the Dcmk fandom who didn't know what Inu Yasha was.
I'm not completely opposed to elements of crossover but I don't yet have a proper idea of how it could best be incorporate for contests for a fandom focused on DCMK. Anyone else is free to let us know why they think.

And time. Thanks so much to everyone who entered! We had some fabulous fics this time, and the voting was seriously really, really close down to the last few hours!
First place goes to House of Mystery with his fic Birthday Presents! Second place goes to Mikauzoran, and tied in a close third we have ichthyophobia and airbournebearcarcass!
Congrats, and, really, great job everybody!
Oh, and Dr. House, if you could get me the three optional prompts for "Betrayed" by sometime tomorrow so I can start contest eight, that would be awesome. Thanks!

I'd like to thank the Academy, my mom, Gosho, Neil Gaiman, Batman, and all of you. Not in that order. Though, I hope this isn't just "be nice to the new guy" syndrome kicking in. The real acid test will be my next couple of Contest entries...

Hahaha! Nice. I don't know, I won the first contest I entered right after I joined, and then I haven't won one since, so watch out. ^.~ Congrats.

Heh. I don't particularly expect to win Competition #7 m'self (unless only one or two other people bother to enter). I don't feel my entry in that contest is my best work, and the fact that its "star" is so obscure will probably turn a lot of people off.
Y' never know, though.

OH! By the way, speaking of acceptance speeches, oh my gosh! Thank you guys so much! I can't believe I got five votes. TwT These past couple times I've really put my all into my entries, and they only got one or two votes, and I was thinking, "You know, maybe I actually suck at this! Maybe I should give up writing before I further embarrass myself and bring dishonor upon my family!" ^.^; Yeeeah. You all know how insecure I am about my writing. I was thinking of taking a one month hiatus and not writing anything for a while, but thanks to you guys my faith in myself as a writer as been restored! (Until next Friday when I go to do my updates and have a mini break down because I can't tell if the chapters I've written are utter crap or not. Yeah, seriously. -.- So thank you all for your support. I know I'm super high maintenance. -.- I promise to try to have more confidence in my work in the future so you all don't have to deal with my silly meltdowns every week. m(_ _)m

Congratulations all! House, we're not just being nice to you. That fic was amazing. And Mikau, I think you did a lot better on the plot arc of this one, which I think helped a lot (I know you had at least one of my votes. ) That said, I will have to try harder next time to rise from the ashes and destroy you all, muah hah hah.
